General Discussion / Turtle Club closing at years end
October 19, 2016, 09:53:18 AM
In today's  Broadcaster,  it was announced that the Turtle Club will be closing. It's last day will be New Year Eve. The article stated, that the property  where the bar / barge docks has been sold to a land investment company. Only 10 more weeks left to get your Wednesday night steaks.  This is one hazard to navigation that will be missed.

General Discussion / Chris Alk
January 13, 2016, 10:25:19 AM
It is with much sadness that I pass on to  the sailing community that Chris Alk died early this morning. He pass in his sleep, after a short fight of pancreatic cancer. Many of you knew him as the past GBCA Treasurer, the owner of Bad Girl, and sometimes driver of Foot Loose. He was one of my best friends, that would always have a smile, and willing to help. We have sailed together for more years then most aggies can count.
I will pass on more information as I find out.

General Discussion / Running for office
November 01, 2015, 01:46:24 PM
As most of you know by now I, am running for Trustee?? This is my stand on the issues!!
First I, will deport all illegals to the Azores, Falklands or Bora Bora. Next I, will ensure a balanced budget by seeing to the proper amount of Rum is consumed at every party. Or beer if you must. If there is food I, will make every effort to see that it is edible.
During board meetings I will make every effort to stay awake or not snore. And I will only be disruptive if the meetings run to long.
Beyond that I can only promise to wear Tye Dye when racing.

VOTE EARLY AND VOTE OFTEN !!

General Discussion / Seabrook Marina Dry Storage
August 20, 2015, 09:17:12 AM
I was talking to Johnny at Seabrook yesterday afternoon, about the dry storage tractor. He stated that a person drove the second tractor through the back of the shed. The D.A. was not hurt but  really tore up the tractor, ( totaled it ). They are working to get his insurance or him to replace it. Anyway, there is only one tractor for now at dry storage.
They also have a new seat on order for the one working tractor. Life is good !?!?

While at the Skippers meeting for the Bay Cup II, I noticed that the High Range marker was called Mark"K" and not Mark"F". I asked were did they get the "K" from? Someone said GBCA's list. So when I got home I dug out an older Senior Members packet from 1995. In the packet there is a Handbook and Membership Roster, Copy of the Bylaws and Sailing Instructions revised 1992. In the SI booklet there is a picture of all the fixed marks and a written description and location (Lat./Lon.). While I understand some of the fixed marks are no longer with us, there are some that have had some changes made to them, and some still there unchanged, but we all need to be on the same page for calling them the same.
By the way in the SI's Mark"K" is 'An orange/red floating shape located near the Baycliff Power Station approximately 1.1 nautical mile from shore, 171* and 1.84 Nat. miles from Mark"Y" and 97* and 1.35 Nat. miles from Mark"S". or 29*31'28.1 / 94*57'28.4. Both marks Y and S are no longer with us as well as the Power Station.
One last thing Seabrook Channel Marker #2 is known in the SI's as Mark"Q"
Thanks for letting me vent. Tye Dyed Gary

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Rum Races
May 10, 2014, 06:41:26 PM
I know it is all volunteer, but it is two weeks until the first TGIS (Rum Race #1). It is about time for the Sailing Instructions to be posted.
We need to start planning boat times, per-race rum drinks, race time jello shots and beers and post race rum drinks. You know the important things.

General Discussion / Boat Show
January 10, 2014, 02:00:15 PM
Yesterday, we went to the Boat Show. Only one Hunter, Lynn Sailboats and KO. Stopped to talk to Robby and Jeff for a few minutes. They were having a long day, not many people stopping by to talk sailing. There were a lot of nice fishing and ski boats plus a section with campers, and the usual booths with fishing guides and fishing and ski stuff. Anyway, Charlene and I decided to see how many free koozies we could get. We only took one at a time and only named displays, we got 10.
If you go to the Boat Show stop by KO to break up Robby's and Jeff's loneliness and see how many free koozies you can get, you can never have enough.

General Discussion / Bill McDonald Passing
September 03, 2013, 02:21:20 PM
Bill McDonald, someone I sailed with for many years passed yesterday. He was a big guy with a big heart and always fun to be around. He stopped racing a few years ago for health reasons, but kept up with what was going on around the bay. Think of him when you have your next rum drink.
