As someone who served on the GBCA board and was the parliamentarian for another organization, be aware of changing a Deed of Gift procedure. You must document your attempts to contact the sponsor of the DoG for permission to make a change to their DoG, and their response. If you get an OK, to make a change, it then has to go to the membership, in open meeting for approval.
If the original person, family member or corporation or their representative is no longer are available, you can make the changes you desire, BUT it still needs to be approved by vote of the full organization membership. The board does not have authority to change a Deed of Gift without membership approval.
This is not a difficult procedure, it just has to be documented, and then maintained, for reference.

General Discussion / Todd DTS
June 19, 2020, 06:13:28 PM
Todd, the live aboard on 'P' dock in Seabrook, has passed away today. He help put together the cabana next to dry storage and was always asking anyone that stopped by if they wanted a beer or some other drink he was mixing at the time. His smiling face will be missed.

I had a friend forward the NOR and SI to me. It looks like a good idea. SOO, why not post them on the web site?   I know there is a conflict with the Peanut Regatta but it gives options.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Conundrum

I see on the on-line calendar that the Conundrum is scheduled for April 18th. Is the club still planning to run this race? If so what about the NOR.

General Discussion / Commodore's Ball Photos

I go to the Commodore's Ball photos under past events and get "Page Not Found". Can this be fixed, so the photos show up.

The boat that won last years series had a special built spinnaker so he could compete against the A-kites (it is class legal, just built different from a standard symmetrical spinnaker layout). Why do you think many of the boats are going to A-kites for the rum races, and around the bay races, for their next new spinnaker. It's because they are mostly off the wind races. If the rum races were true windward/ leeward courses, there wouldn't be this question being raised. It is the sailing Aspect of the two types of spinnakers that causes the disparity, not the sail displacement. A asymmetrical spinnaker can sail 10 to 15 degrees closer to the wind on a reach then a symmetrical spinnaker.

I also agree that low point scoring would be more fair. BUT, you need to look at how the spinnaker classes were divided for last summer's Rum Races and this years Icicles. One class has 25 to 40 boats and the other with maybe 5 or 6 boats.
To avoid this disparity in classes, maybe we should return to a Asymmetrical and Symmetrical Spinnaker classes vs over or under sail displacement area. This would even out the classes a little better, and not add another class. This would also have boats with the same aspects of sail competing against each other, vs what we have now, that favors asymmetrical spinnakers.

Brian,
You are correct, that LOW POINT would work better and more accurate. The scoring that is used is just a hold over from the early 1990's when the TGIF started and later moved to Saturday, so more boats could come out to play.

Bee,
Yes, you are correct on your understanding.   BUT, this goes back to past board members (myself included), failure to pass on and hand off instructions and resolutions that addressed these situations.  Example, April 2017, the board passed a new scoring for Icicles and Rum races. Basically, go 8 deep (less likely to have a tie) and give a point to everyone that sailed (for head count, plus get something for showing up vs. those that stayed at the dock).
This was changed back to what we got for this Icicle. I blame myself for part of this for not doing a better job of handing off this information to the person that took my place on the board.
I worried more about him knowing that he needed to turn off the CO2 valve INSIDE the keg refrigerator when changing kegs. The clubs in the old style taps that do not have a check valve and blows CO2 into the compartment when a tap is pulled.

I know this is after the fact and does not apply to the 1st Icicle Race. BUT, because of the unpredictability of the winds we to extend the time limit by one hour to 1600. This could be easily done with an amendment to the SI's.
When you look at the posted results from the first Icicle, you can see there would have been a lot more rum handed out.

Yea it's back, and it lumps most of the spinnaker boats into one group despite the fact that Symmetric and Asymmetric boats have totally different aspect of sail.

Marathon Pipeline is working in Seabrook Dry Storage today, on the gas metering station north of the powerline towers. They said they hope to be finished this afternoon, but you know how that goes. Anyway, I pointed out the area that was needed to have crane access, and the foreman said he would keep that area clear tomorrow it they didn't finish today.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / 2020 Icicle Series

It's twenty (20) days till the first Icicle. So it's about time to get out the SI's.
A request!!!! Keep last years Icicle instructions, just change the dates. They are simple, easy to understand and pits similar type boats together, vs the mess caused by the over or under the (SA/D), and the different type & size boats that raced against each other in the Rum Races.
My two cents worth. Gary
