They were just making crew member change-ups, and forgot the gang plank :-) . The camera never forgets! I remember one ?fogy? Icicle race going around the low range, it was so fogy you could only see about 100 feet ahead, I could only hear a bunch of yelling and then the sound of crunching fiber glass and then more yelling! I so glad to be in the lead at the time.

I distinctly remember a crunch when it was not foggy.  I think there were no pictures we were too stunned

It was definitely foggy the day Trink took that picture.  You can faintly see a boat in the background.  We watched it happen.  Most likely a combination of poor visibility and much different boat speeds in a crowd.  As I recall it was one of those days when you suddenly see the boat ahead appear out of the fog.

We had a close call during one of HYC's revognah's.  In what appeared to be an instant, Nemo appeared heading right toward us. Vic managed to avoid the collision but it was definitely close.

Maybe we need fog horns.

Actually I believe we are supposed to ring a bell in fog both my little Irwin and big Irwin have a bell.  Put that on your xmas list and be ready for fog.  Either that or an infrared camera they can see through fog.

Hmm.  I think one of the new air blast horns is better.  Just think, you could scare the hell out of the boat in front, just before you smacked 'em. :)

The first Icicle Race is this weekend!! With the passing of our friend and fellow sailor Jim Wells, we will rename the first Icicle Race of 2014, the "Jim Wells Celebration Icicle Race". After listening to Jim's Priest at the Rosary last evening, I took away that Jim did not want anyone to mourn his passing. He had a great life, a wonderful family, many friends and he fought the good fight! Let us all put on our best "Corinthian Spirit" then race hard and Honest. After the race, come to the GBCA Clubhouse, have some chili, a good time, and a toast to Jim Wells Vice-Commodore GBCA.
Another friend of GBCA also passed this month. While looking up Jim's obituary, I came across Roy Weeks who had passed. Roy was a Commodore of GBCA in 1994. Many knew Roy as "Capt. Roy" who taught many of us to be Captains in spirit and by the books.
Jim and Roy volunteered many hours in making GBCA what it is today. Let's all follow in their "wake" and make this club even better!

I just heard about the lost of our good friend Jim Wells as well, we both raced in the Wednesday Races on Clearlake, for many years, he always was helpful to us all and always kept you smiling. He crewed for me(KATANA) in the 2010 Rum Races and the 2010 Harvest Moon Race(see photo) and helped us win a second place trophy, that was a race you just felt lucky to finish, but with Jims help we made it. We had some great talks together on that race, he will be greatly missed, but suffers no longer.

I would like to suggest that we all fly(the higher the better) our American flags on the first Icicle race in memory of Jim! I think most of us have an American flag, just my thoughts pass it on and maybe it will catch on! Terry Young

It looks to be a spectacular day Saturday. I had hoped to have the GBCA Calendars today, but between me ordering late and the weather, they are not in yet. Next weekend for sure. That gives you time to get your Senior Membership current or upgraded. John should be out on Tramp tomorrow getting some pictures to start off the New Year! After the race, come by for Hot Chili and Rum. Let us have a toast to Jim Wells and all our friends who have passed before us. Sail safe!

Thanks again Lacy Bros! A great start to the Icicle Series. 765 great pictures. Some really nice ones of the mark rounding. I bet there were 60 boats out there. The weather was great (64?!). The clubhouse patio was full. I think Jim would have enjoyed every minute of it!

Great way to start the season. Between the Revognah and Icicle 1 the average would be just good for the rest of the year. Maybe we can improve by using the class flags. We were in doubt from time to time who we were competing against. And who won. As tradition by now: very good pictures representing the race. Fair winds and safe sailing in 2014.

Walter;

Set aside a XL Icicle shirt for me. We had some Electrical problems on the boat yesterday and spent all day making repairs. We will be ready for Icicle 2 next week.

Also, Please send me a mailing address so I can mail in my Dues Check. I had planned to drop it off yesterday but were deep into repairs on the boat.

Looks like you guys had a great race, sorry we missed it.

What a great start to 2014! Just got finished looking at the pics (thanks John) and it looked like a great day on the Bay. Quite a few new boats, Greg's Joyride, Mustang Sally too, and JK3's sweet ride Hanse 415 (buy'n me a lotto ticket) to name a few. The J105 fleet was out in force getting ready for their Mid-Winter Nationals in March. Leopard flying Jim Well's Vice-Commodore Flag at half mast was a great tribute to a great Man. Thanks to all who came out to race and to the party afterwards, what a crowd! Remember... to win the overall Icicle Series, you must be a Senior Member. There are four races left and it is anybody's game. Make sure you fly the appropriate class flag and next week is the "Reverse Course"....Todd ;).

That was us, sorry, forgot our flag!  We were Spin Non Sprit.  I realized halfway through the second leg and figured we'd tie up a rag if needed.  We fouled the kite on the take down and ran long past the mark while the fleet turned the corner and sailed away from us.  There is always next week!

I have received communication from the owner of ?Sol Air?, an Ericson 39, sail # 53; who claims they were sailing in Spin Non-Sprit class, but admittedly without a white flag, because they ?forgot?.

Scoring is adjusted accordingly: SOS 2nd-5th moves up one place and Rapide who was reported as 6th is now 5th.

Lil Bit a Sol (Ericson 32 #713) is correctly reported in Cruising Club.

This stresses the importance of every boat clearly displaying the proper class flag (white for spinnaker [Sprit and Non-Sprit]; dark for Non-Spinnaker; white over dark for SOS/Shorthand [2 or less crew]; orange for GBCA Cruising Club) and winners taking accurate record of the top five boats.  There is no race committee on the water, so we are relying upon scribbled scraps of paper, lunch bags, receipts, etc.  to make up our winners list.

Thanks

You do realize that the last page of the SI's provides a recording sheet for the first place winner to score the top five boats?
But that would mean you are taking the SI's with you on board!   ::)  ;D

Some of the Membership has requested the full roster of boats finishing in the GBCA Cruising Class. We are nothing if not responsive to the requests of our esteemed Membership.

Please bear in mind that these are ?relaxed? and somewhat ?informal? races and not all results make it to the Super Chicken in time for the Ratings Drop for a variety of reasons. Help your Club help you by:

Turning in your finish time promptly in 24-hour format.

Flying the proper orange flag. Non-Cruising Class please don?t fly your MOB flag during the race. This is especially important during summer races. It?s confusing and altogether un-seamanlike. Come to think of it, no one should do this.

Turn in your finish time no matter how bad. Several have said ?I wasn?t in the top 5 so I didn?t bother?. Nothing could be further from the truth. The worse you do, the better your handicap becomes for your next outing.

Report times to jkevinbox at gmail dot com if you?re not sure your rum-stained cocktail napkin was recorded properly.

Use a good e-mail address when registering. Use a good phone number and check the box to receive text messages from the organizer. This is being used more to blast information during regattas.

Keep coming out no matter what your skill level may be. You?ll be a bit better next time.

Upon review of the Lacy pictures: In the Spin Non-Sprit class, 4th place #5101 is Pingo which is a sprit boat.  Fortunately, the submitted list contained 10 finishes with a mix of sprit and non sprit.  Phoenix moves up to 4th and Tejas Blue #41940 takes 5th.

Philip Kropf From the TMCA just posted the following about some dredge work this Saturday. Please Read!!!
GBCA Icicle Series racers:

Here is the text of a notice that I have received on dredge work that is scheduled to start this Saturday.
Beginning on Saturday, January 25, 2014 Weeks Marine Inc., Dredge "Capt. Frank" will begin dredging a trench for a pipeline across the Houston Ship Channel just south of North Boater Cut channel. We estimate 8 hrs of dredging activities for the completion of the trench. The actual crossing coordinates on centerline of Houston Ship Channel: Lat 29d 34.712'  Lon 094d 55.842'.

Those of you participating in the Icicle Series Race 4 should be aware of this work as the race course may come close to dredge equipment or work vessels that may be mobilized for this project. The location of the trench that they are dredging is indicated by the red line on the chart below (and attached). A dredge pipeline will later be placed into this trench for the purpose of transporting dredge spoils from dredging work that will be occurring at nearby locations in the mid-bay area, passing under the HSC, and then to be deposited in the Mid Bay Placement Area (aka "Mid-Bay Marsh").

For those not yet aware, major dredging work is going to be occurring during most of 2014 in (1) the Bayport Channel and Bayport Flare and (2) in the Houston Ship Channel between Redfish Reef (approximately light 54) all the way north to light 78 at the Bayport Flare. (The most current chart of this area is at: http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/11327.shtml ). Since this is the most active part of Galveston Bay as far as recreational boaters are concerned, it is very important that everyone become keenly aware of exactly where work will be going on at any given time, and especially aware of where dredge pipelines are going to be!

More information on this entire project can be found in a USACE press release that can be accessed on the TMCA website by clicking herehttp://www.tmca.nu/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=178&Itemid=87 (http://www.tmca.nu/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=178&Itemid=87). Additionally, on the morning of February 8th, Lakewood Yacht Club will be hosting a Captain's Roundtable event at which a USACE representative will make a detailed presentation on all this dredging work. If you maybe have kind of forgotten how to tell which is the "safe side" and which is the "danger side" of a dredge that you may be trying to pass, click herehttp://www.tmca.nu/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=117&Itemid=87 (http://www.tmca.nu/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=117&Itemid=87) to access the "Sharing Our Bay" document that exists to help keep us all safe as we navigate in and around the commercial shipping channels.

Finally, dredge pipelines are fairly easy to see when they are floating on the surface, but when they are submerged (on the bottom, or in a trench), they are potentially far more dangerous when you encounter them than the dredges themselves! If you are trying to cross a submerged pipeline you need to know how much good water is on top of that pipeline!! In the past it has always been very frustrating trying to call a dredge on the radio and not have them answer. But during the entirety of these dredging projects in 2014, there is now a person stationed aboard each dredge whose sole duty is to maintain a radio watch. The USACE has required this of the dredging contractor in an attempt to keep all of us safe as we navigate around these worksites. A paragraph in the USACE press release tells you how to contact a dredge via VHF.

When I find out about specific dredging activities such as the one noted in this Alert, I will do my best to get the information distributed. But generally just be very careful out on Galveston Bay this year as you navigate close to the areas where dredging might be taking place. A fatality occurred a couple of years ago in the Anahuac Channel when a recreational boater hit a dredge pipeline, and no one wants any kind of reoccurrence of that!!!

They should be putting the spoil on the other side of the channel, so there shouldn't be any pipes on the west side.  Just my opinion.

Anyone is welcome to challenge a boat's PHRF number.  But, they need to present the challenge with facts to the committee and we will review the rating based on facts.  But, it is very difficult to base ratings on results of a pursuit style race.

Challenging a rating is always a slippery slope; one is basically saying the team is not as fast as the results portray.  Are there some boats that may have a rating that doesn't accurately portray their performance; possibly.  Why do certain boats continually win the non-spinnaker class? Why are many of the top finishers J boats?  How does one "prove" the speed of a PHRF crew? How you race a boat one-design is much different than racing numbers.  Many times a crew that is used to racing PHRF does not do well racing one-design.  This becomes an unfair method of comparison, but how do you measure?

I think it would be interesting to have the crews switch boats; have the 105's sail the 109's and vise versa.

Harris:

Maybe you should learn how to sail your boat up to its rating and then worry about
forcing PHRF changes to other boats.

Maybe you should recognize the fact that your 44.7 was never designed to run an A-kite.

Maybe you should recognize that Goethe, Mather, Uzi and George Cushing are
really good sailors and have really good crew.  I wish I was in their league but the
only reason Stinger does well is directly related to her crew.

This was one of the first races that Ben Miller and the other C22 did not finish first
against all of us.  Are you going to argue for changing the C22 rating.  Ben Miller
is a damn good sailor.  How does that affect his handicap?  I have heard gripping
about this but there are 15,000+ C22's.  I just cannot see changing their handicap
just because one doesn't like it.

Every time Kevin Hayes and Mike McGagh run the M24 Mojo race they finish in
the top five.  These two guys are excellent sailors.  Finishing close to them is
worth the effort all the way.  When Pedro and his crew are in tune Pingo is
another boat that's tough to beat.

The big difference between the J's, M24's, and C22's and the rest of the
fleet is that they frequently sail OD against each other.  What this means is
that they have to tune the boat for optimum performance, make sure that the
sail complement is the best they can buy, and yes, do those things that reduce
weight and optimize through the water perforrmance.  To win OD consistently
one is forced learn the boat really well and tereby become a better sailor.

Vic Forsyth used to say "One starts losing points at the dock."  I translate that to
"Boat prep, Boat prep, Boat prep, you can't do enough of that."

OJ Young will win the HMR (pursuit) almost every time he enters.  That Whitby 42
may be a handicap beater but are you willing to argue that OJ is not a good sailor?
Are you willing to say that its not his boat prep and skills that make this happen?

If you have trouble with your handicap go race in GBCA's orange class and get
El Pollo Rey to change your Cap each race.  Should give you some idea of how
good you actually are.

Back to some "un-rated" comments. Again a day to be grateful we can be out on the water year round. This time we finally had real icicles. Joan III's crew had a great time though we missed the opportunity to luff our sailmaker. Next time Butch! Sailing a long keel, classic yawl ratings are always important and the surprising thing with the pursuit is that we all do finish so close together.

Waiting for the pictures!
Title: Re: 2014 Icicle Series
Post by: Bee on January 27, 2014, 11:28:56 AM
Well said Maarten.  I am always impressed with how close some of the finishes are but I also see a lot of boats that are still learning, or maybe just having fun.  I am also more and more impressed with what some racers negatively refer to as "curisers."  I now know that many of them are really great guys and great sailors.  Some have more hours on the water then any of us so-called "racers."  One or two have sailed around the world with class.

I'll be the first to admit that PHRF stinks, but it is what it is.  Technology (sprits, carbon fiber, foils, ...) will continue to make rating boats very difficult.  Its the reason IRC, ORC, and the other "new" systems exist. Oh, and BTW, ORC did little to calm the discourse on ratings when Andrea tried it in the HMR's.

Speaking of foiling, up on foils the AC72's were consistently running at something like 2 or maybe on occasion 2.5 times true wind speed.  How should we set a PHRF number for them?  Would we be willing to allow them to race in the multi-hull class?

How 'bout the Moth's.  Would be interesting to give one of those a PHRF rating (any number should do) and let them run one of the pursuit races with us.  I would really love to see that. Any speculation on how close the second place boat would be?

Just a reminder. According to the SI's:
XI. Series Awards
Trophies for the series will be awarded to the top three eligible yachts in each class based on points awarded per race. All yachts must be owned by a GBCA senior member and have a valid PHRF-GB certificate as of the date of the last race in the series to be eligible for series awards. GBCA Club Handicap class participants are not required to have a rating certificate.

Make sure you Senior Membership is current. Help your Club and good luck with winning the ever coveted trophy class flags!

You weren't on the list from the "Bench". I will release the chicken for a re-drop after morning feed. We get better "results" that way.

"Knot on Call" will be the sole median boat with Ron above and you below. Depending on how it "shakes out" some boats may change.
