GBCA's Basic Sailboat Racing Seminar is this Saturday, June 18th at the clubhouse from 11:30 until about 3pm, and continuing on the water for Rum Race # 2. Some of the participants need a boat to hitch a ride on as crew, and some of the participants need crew, including skippers/tacticians/coaches, for help in getting their boats around the course. If you can help in either capacity, let me know. You can reply here, pm me on this site, or email me at jpowers(at)powersfrost(dot).com. So that boats won't have to displace regular crew to accept seminar participants, seminar participants are invisible and weightless for crew number/weight purposes for this race only. Thanks

Doug Shaffer and his crew on "Gambler" won first place in the 7 boat PHRF B class at Charleston Race Week. I don't know for sure who was on the crew other than Kevin Hayes, but congratulations to all.

The 2011 version of GBCA's Basic Sailboat Racing Seminar is set for June 18th. Registration is available at https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/applet_club_events.php?CLUB_ID=162

This annual event is designed to introduce the novice skipper or crew to the Racing Rules of Sailing, explain enough about how a race is managed to allow the skipper to know when to start and where to go, and touch on the basics of preparation of a boat and crew to race. Attendees spend about 3 hours in a class at the GBCA clubhouse and then go out on an assigned boat with a veteran crew and skipper to race in the Rum Race that afternoon, or have a veteran racer assigned to your boat and crew to help you for the race. Rum Races are pursuit races (the slower boats get a head start and the faster boats try to catch them) that start at the entrance to the Clear Lake Channel, race in a 13 mile triangle around designated platforms in Galveston Bay, and finish at the entrance to the Clear Lake Channel.

The finish is between Markers #1 and 2, but all Rum Races end the same way- at the post race party where the trophies (bottles of rum) are awarded to winners and the winners share their awards with the losers.

If you have a boat but have never raced, we have just the fleet for you. The Club Handicap Fleet is designed for the sailor who doesn't have racing sails, doesn't have his diver's number in speed dial, doesn't want to unload the blender, bimini and barbecue pit before every race, but who has his crew tighten up the jib sheet if gets within hailing distance of another boat. Come to the Seminar and race in the Rum Race that afternoon. You can get details on the Club Handicap Fleet from Board members Walter Caldwell or Beverly Caldwell, or  Kevin Box, who kills the chickens, or any of the regular participants in the Club Handicap Fleet.

The Seminar starts at 11:30 and will be over by 3pm, to allow time to get to boats. Lunch and soft drinks/water will served. All of this for only $10.00!!

GBCA's Basic Sailboat Racing Seminar will now be held on June 18th, in conjunction with Rum Race # 2. Details will be posted within the next few weeks, but the Seminar will include the opportunity for attendees to have experienced racers help them race their own boat around the course for Rum Race # 2, or provide boats for attendees to join as working crew for the race. The date of the seminar is being moved to avoid a conflict with some other activities that weekend.

The current Google Earth shot of Galveston Bay was taken on March 13, 2010, the day the Conundrum was raced. Three boats are visible approaching, rounding and leaving "E". Others are scattered in the vicinity of "2". I couldn't find "Tramp"

Galveston Bay Area Racing / 2011 Icicle Series Awards
February 10, 2011, 03:03:38 PM
Series Awards for the 2011 Icicle series will be awarded at the post race party on February 12th.  You do not have to be present to win.  HOWEVER, contestants who may be in a position to win an award should read the following section of the sailing instructions, particularly the highlighted part:

XI.  Series Awards

"Trophies for the series will be awarded to the top three eligible yachts in each class based on points awarded per race. All yachts must be owned by a GBCA senior member and have a valid PHRF-GB certificate as of the date of the last race in the series to be eligible for series awards. GBCA Club Handicap class participants are not required to have a rating certificate."
