We'll be selling long-sleeve Icicle Series t-shirts at the after-party, Navy or White. Only $20!
If you want one, but can't make it to the party, let me know what size/color and I'll try to set one aside for you.

Sure looks like you were on port to begin with (see IMG_1485)...

and from the pictures it doesn't look obvious that Capt Kidd was being propelled by machinery.  If she were, then of course she was the burdened vessel and you were obligated to hold course and speed.
But all I see is the photos.

This is why you don't ever want to ride on The Capt. Kidd. Notice that Kidd is on port (with motor running) while the other two boats are on starboard. Luckily no accident but very poor judgement on the part of The Kidd.

In the beginning it looks like the J105s and the Kidd are all on port, with the Kidd to leeward.  Then the 105s jibe to starboard.  Infinity passes astern of the Kidd, while Stinger attempts to cross ahead.
Bonehead move on Stinger, in my humble opinion.

Since the weather is so nice, we will be meeting outside on the back deck at Cabo. You might want to bring a light jacket.
See you there!

Galveston Bay Area Racing / 2014 Board nominations
September 19, 2013, 01:46:11 PM
The Nominating Committee of the Board of Governors is issuing a call for nominations for our upcoming elections. Open positions include all flag officers (Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Secretary and Treasurer.) These officers serve one-year terms. Three of the six additional board positions are open. These members serve two-year terms. Six candidates are required on the ballot for these three positions.

Nominees must be senior members in good standing. You must be a senior member in good standing to nominate someone.

Nominations will close on September 29, to give the Nominating Committee sufficient time to prepare and mail ballots to all senior members.

If you want to get more involved with your club by serving on the Board, or have someone to suggest, please submit a nomination.
To submit a nomination, contact a member of the Nominating Committee: Walter Caldwell, Jody Henry, Jim Wells, Chris Alk, or Scott Lacy.

If you have any questions about service on the Board, ask any current Board Member.

Steve,
The cruising class was formed so that heavier cruising boats with loads of extra equipment could race competitively against each other. The handicaps are adjusted after each regatta or series race based on how the boats actually finished. The handicapper will generally give a lower rating (sometimes much lower than her normal PHRF rating) to boats designed for racing.  This is partly to discourage racing boats to win everything right off the bat. If the boat continues to participate, the rating will adjust up or down accordingly.
A couple of suggestions:
1. Attempt to get a PHRF rating from PHRF Galveston Bay (maybe you've already done this, I don't know), and race PHRF, or
2. Get a group of like-minded portsmith boats, figure out your starting times, and go race.  If there is enough particpation GBCA would probably consider another rum race class (if most of them are members of GBCA of course!)

Regarding the party on SATURDAY at GYB pool area:

I just found out that the GYB cash bar is just that - CASH ONLY - no plastic.
There is an ATM by the bait store.

(Jeez. Even GBCA takes credit cards these days.)

Party venue change:
Due to some unforeseen and unexpected circumstances, we have moved the venue for the Thursday and Friday post-race activities.  I think these changes will actually be better anyway. Details are still being worked out, but here is what we know so far.

  • Thursday - post-race happy hour at The Rum Shack, which is on the roof of The Spot on the Galveston Seawall.  1800-2000.
  • Friday - Pizza party on the Tall Ship Elissa and Texas Seaport Museum. We will have access to about half of The Elissa (the rest is under renovation) and the entire museum. Open rum bar and beer. 1900-2230.
  • Saturday - same as before - Awards banquet and dinner at the Yacht Basin Pool. Cash bar and free beer. 1800-2200.

Remember you need to sign up for an event pass to attend these parties. Only $25.  Sign up here.

More room on a 105 than on a Hobie 33 I would imagine.  ;)

Just talked to Stephanie at the Yacht Basin. If you want a slip with power, you better get on the ball.
Plenty of room on the breakwater though, and it's free.
