General Discussion / GBCA Ballots
October 29, 2019, 08:58:52 AM
The ballots for 2020 GBCA board members and awards have been sent out.

If you have not received yours (i.e. we don't have an updated email for you), please let us know.  The voting for the board members is very important for the future of the club. This will let you chose how things are run. The annual awards are very important as well; they acknowledge the hard work people have done to build the sport.

If you are passionate about something that needs to change, or continue, we welcome your opinion with volunteer hours. The volunteers is what has kept this club strong since 1947. If you have an idea, send us an email. We will be happy to sit down and discuss the possibilities.

There is a fantastic news article (https://www.houstonchronicle.com/about/houston-gives/article/Sailing-Angels-brings-joy-of-water-to-veterans-14471291.php) about the event.

Thank you to all who are pushing this forward!!!

GBCA has been lucky enough to be involved with the Sailing Angels this year.

We are hosting the regatta portion of this fantastic fundraising event. I have posted the NOR on GBCA's website, or you can follow the link: http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/19795/2019NOR.pdf

Many of you have heard that this will be my last year running Wednesday Night Races. At this point, no one wants to take the lead and run races instead of racing. There have been a lot of ideas thrown around of what to do, but still no one wants to run races. i suggest the following:
- Basically go old school
- Races run out of BARGE 295 using the No Wake buoy as start and finish mark
- Start and finish from there.
- Use fixed marks (#14, #17, etc..)
- Each boat that races, takes a turn running races. People can either volunteer for certain weeks or people can draw for their week.
- Maybe have it as 3 laps and can shorten if wind is light.
- Use TOT where distance is a non factor.
- Course could be: Start at BARGE 295 > Mark off Villa Capri or apartments west > Day beacon #16 > Nun #14 > Start mark  at BARGE 295.
- The one running race could get average points. or, use it as a throw out. Or don't worry about cumulative scores.

While it was an excellent experiment in different courses for the Rum Races, maybe it's time to stop exposing our Keels to old Red Fish Gas field. The structures  are no longer there, but the pipes that connected them together are still there, AND the shrimpers drag them up with a certain amount of regularity. Basically if you are south of the South Trinity Cut or east of marker M52 you are in the old Red Fish Gas Production field. The old well heads were west of Red Fish.
I know it will shorten the Rum Races course by about a mile, but it will cut exposure to keel damage if we start using Trinity Cut mark 8. It is easily seen from a distance and we don't have to maintain it or request a permit for it's placement. Plus go back to using the Low Range marker(E) for the north mark.
I did enjoy the challenge of the different courses in the Rum Races and other races, but I am thinking of safety. If we continue with the TGIF series that finish after dark, we shouldn't expose ourselves to this submerged hazard.

The buoy is a topic of discussion over the winter.

Why go back to E? The High Range gives a better reach leg.. Boats have to use a barber hauler and actually reach rather than crack the jib 2" and power beat...

The Reggae is Aug. 17th.  The above date is incorrect.

Thanks Farley. I have it on the calendar for the 17th.

Ok Scott.  How do these "Juniors" get onto a boat?  Stinger has never been involved.

That is something we need to work on for the whole area.  I had sent emails out to the youth groups. I would be interested in any ideas you may have to connect the two.

Looks like they have us both as scored now @Walter.  I too had noticed and then checked on my PHRF certificate that apparently I had forgot to renew this year.  ...first time out since HMR last year so I hadn't thought about PHRF certificate or much related to the boat lately but it was great to be out sailing Banjo Girl again.  I noticed Shaken not Stirred also was not in the 2019 PHRF database.

My guess is that we were scored DNF due to some automated GBCA thing due to us not having a current certificate.  Could this be the case?  I will renew mine before the next time out.  My rating should be the same unless I decide to apply for the new roller furling credit and then I guess I'll be able to start a little earlier next time.

The RR scoring is done based on people entering their times. We do not have any automated certificate checker. If you had finished and don't see your placement, send us an email and we can enter it in.

But, for clarification, the results are pulled from the data entered by the competitors - correct or not.

I had talked to HYC before they rescheduled. I don't plan to change RR7.

I had placed the Single/Mixed Make-up on the calendar so people could plan in case we had to reschedule.

Alright boys and girls, it is time to get our juniors out on some keelboats.  Now that we have all these kids racing and winning across the country, it's time to introduce them to the next phase of racing...

GBCA Junior Regatta is 7/27/19. We have blended this event with our Rum Race with the Jrs racing the same course. This gives them the opportunity to race against "the big boys" and be scored among their peers... The NOR is available here: http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/19485/2019JuniorRegattaNOR.pdf

It's simple: driver must be under 18 years of age by the day of the event. Crew can be of any age.

Please note in the Sailing Instructions that we are doing a conference call Skipper Meeting. And, if needed, a reschedule date is set.

Sailing Instructions for both events are posted on Regatta Network.

It is too early to call the event either way.
