Bill sailed a lot with us on Stinger.  Wonderful fellow and fun to sail with.  He will be missed.

I liked what they did last year.  The race to Janis Joplin's home town was a neat alternative to the usual triangles in the Gulf.  It was fun to see something different from what we normally encounter.  The beat up starting at 05:00 was rough but I was told the ride back was great.  I slept through most of it. Maybe if we could find a suitable mark/platform in that direction we could get more participation. The more traditional one in September was also great.

I wish I knew why participation is so low.  Maybe it was/is the economy, although it seems to be cooking at the moment. Maybe its that old farts like me are rapidly reaching the age where they can no longer go. The first Heald Bank Stinger ran had at least twice as many entries as 2015's races.  I don't remember which one but McGagh's Olsen 30  took 1st place by 20 seconds over the second place boat.  Haven't seen boats like that enter in a while.

Hopefully Offshore races will not die.

Airborne now has her ORC Club certificate.  Easy and fast.   NOTE:  If you intend to use a Code Zero you need to include the measurement information in the notes section of the application. Unfortunately there is no other place to enter the C0 measurement data.  I put the information in the notes and the ORC folks added that sail.  It does make a difference in the boat's predicted speeds (in the TWA / TWS where you would use a C0).   Therefore - using a Code Zero changes your rating.

Thanks a bunch for calling this to my attention Dave.  I certainly did not want to hoist my 0 without proper rating.  I was told many times that a 0's narrow TWA window made it mostly useless, but I love the sail and as my crew will tell you try to hoist it when I shouldn't.  It is extremely efficient in light air and makes a huge speed difference on really tight reaches.

However, whether or not it changes your ORC rating apparently depends on the measurements.  I sent the measurements of my code 0 to Chris Bragdon at USSAILING and got this back.

Good morning, Bee.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. When declaring sail inventory, the relevant sails are those that comprise the largest set. Code 0's walk the line between being a boat's largest headsail (important for rating) or their smallest spinnaker (not important for rating). As the ½ width/foot ratio is >75%, your Code 0 is classed as a spinnaker and thus does not influence your certificate or rating.

No further action is required and your current certificate is valid for racing.

Kind regards,

Yep.  The blue dotted line in my graphic is the rhumb line between M52 and E.

Actually there is a submerged platform there.  Its an older chart but I will be some of that junk is still there.

I plugged your "bump" into my chart plotter here at home.  There are some pipes nearby so its likely that is what you hit.

Thanks for postings.

Whatever you hit is very near to the path from M42 to E and therefore part of the Rum Race Series races.

Un-Classified Ads / Re: Old J105 Main

That could be a deal.

I do have a couple of mains that are still in reasonable condition. One is a 2012 UK that got me a 3rd in one of this year's Rum Races.  The other is a 2013 that I used to win all the Offshore races and the Texas Navy Trophy.  I would want something for those.

Bit of a change.

I will give the North main away to anyone who wants it.

This is all true JD, but many of the competitors did not read the no luffing rule or even care about it.  I don't know how many times a symmetrical thought he could keep me from passing over the top.  The result was usually a disaster for him but he did it anyway.  I have to admit that when I started running the Rum Races, I also did not realize that there was a no luffing rule.  Took me a while to do my best to avoid situations where luffing was an issue, but there is no question that an A-Kite is much more capable of doing this then a symmetric.

I just got a nice lesson from Nicole on why I should not have taken her up but then I needed to pass as quickly as possible.  To be friendly, I should have gone high but my feeble old brain just did not do the proper calculations.

I am quite sure the GBCA board discussed this at length and finally thought they had no alternative.  Let's just all agree to go by the RRS and see how it works for a while.
