I suppose a  130# 12 year old doctor could get the kite down if the boat were driven properly into the mark... ;D

QuoteI believe Musica (Aerodyne 38, this years Harvest Moon winner) is also headed to KW...

Musica is headed to Fort Lauderdale for feeder race to KW only.  Then, Charleston Race Week, and Newport Bermuda 2012.
Get your sail on.....

From Cliff Haddox: able to sail fast, unable to post here---

My many thanks to all: competitors, volunteers, sponsors, and most of all my crew.
Saturday?s race was like a knife fight inside a telephone booth. Everyone was on top of their game and had their claws out.
A hard three days of offshore racing under the Texas sun with an evening of Kelly Mcguire.  Musica!

Along these lines:  Many thanks to the aforementioned many times over.

Gas money back and forth to Galveston 3 times: $50
Blowing up reacher kite and poking hole in runner: $650

A family in the lobby caught sight of the pageantry and this little girl asked daddy what those pretty boats were doing.  He said that he thought they were racing each other.  She said that when she got big she was going to do that:***PRICELESS***

SAVING SAILING--ONE REGATTA AT A TIME

Minimizing  a person overboard to a "non-event" is dangerous in itself, to call it "entertaining" shows disrespect for the seriousness of this life threatening event.  50 intangibles could have gone a different way, and we would be lamenting a tragedy on Clear Lake.  Serious injury to Jeanna, or other crew members during the event could easily have happened.   And, the sail, boat and crew handling have to be examined in order to grow the knowledge and safety of the crew, and the sport in general.  The SA community has many well-intentioned people ruined by a majority of infantile, morally bankrupt artless foobs.  Some points were well stated, though. Not many.

I am not at all a good example of wearing a PFD, but a throwable nearby is prudent.

Here is what I see:
After the first round-up, initiated by crew weight movement off the rail, I suspect-- the spin guy gets eased @29sec, this initiates the second round up, and parks the boat, losing Jeanna.  At this point, the guy could be run completely through the blocks (assuming your strongest crew is holding the spin sheet in position for a take down) and the kite could have been under control a little faster.  One minute to get the kite under control is not bad at all.

I was thrown off a J/80 while under spinnaker practicing before a WNR on the Bay, by the mainsheet (not the crew), and I have 35 years sailing under my belt.  It was the first time I had ever fallen overboard.  Falling off a dock is a different matter--I did not spill the drinks, though.  It is a vulnerable feeling of helplessness as the boat sails away, and one that helps me respect the seriousness of a crew overboard.

General Discussion / Re: Sponsors and your Email
June 14, 2011, 09:54:12 AM
The sponsor agreement should have clear definitions about what the sponsor is getting BEFORE they give their money.  I bet it was not stipulated that sponsors have access to GBCA email list. Period.

I completely agree with Sailchick--there are much better ways to get sponsors out in front of GBCA members, instead of hammering our inbox.

I do not support GBCA handing out CONFIDENTIAL email lists to sponsors--EVER.

J/Fest was successful on many levels for many reasons.  Put a J infront of anything--J/24 for example-- ;D and it will have a very good chance of being successful.  There was money because LYC members know how to work with the city of Seabrook and secure 10K through economic development funds the city gets from hotel tax monies. Local sponsors realize the value of LYC, J/Boats, and J/Sailors.  LYC promoted the event to their members--J/Boats, Scott Spurlin, J/Boats Southwest, or North Sails, and the other sponsors did not get the LYC Membership roster to continue emailing promotions to.
