General Discussion / Re: Because someone asked...

I absolutely agree that this would be a good thing to help motivate people to come out and play a lot more.  We do it just because I am always afraid I may not be able to do it much longer, but a trophy might be more help.

Make the trophy presentation at the Commode Doors' Ball.  Trophy shouldn't cost all that much anyway.  Couple hundred bucks.

It pays to show up at every race.

Well, Alan,  you may sail slower, but you do train great mainsail trimmers.

Wow.  What a concpt.  If this doesn't get them out, nothing will.

I have no trouble believing you BJ.  I think its still true that the further North you go the shallower the bay gets.

Glad to hear HYC is deep enough to harbor us.

I hope your right Charles.

As one of my crew pointed out to me:

If this happens us deeper keel boats may not make it up too far North of Bayport

FRIDAY
EAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. BAY WATERS CHOPPY. SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS.

FRIDAY NIGHT
NORTHEAST WINDS 15 TO 25 KNOTS. BAY WATERS CHOPPY.
SHOWERS LIKELY AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EVENING...THEN A
CHANCE OF SHOWERS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

SATURDAY
NORTH WINDS 15 TO 20 KNOTS. BAY WATERS CHOPPY. A CHANCE
OF SHOWERS IN THE MORNING.

SATURDAY NIGHT
NORTH WINDS 10 TO 15 KNOTS DECREASING TO 5 TO 10 KNOTS
AFTER MIDNIGHT. BAY WATERS SLIGHTLY CHOPPY DECREASING TO SMOOTH AFTER
MIDNIGHT.

The inner harbor at HYC is deep enough, but I had problems getting into the harbor and then getting out of my slip.  My old slip was about 2/3  the way from the entrance to the first big shed on the right.  It always seem to pay to go a bit further North past the  old judge's stand and then head directly up the entrance at a good clip.  I frequently skipped along the bottom but always made it in.  I guess because my keel dug a hole in the bottom of my slip, getting out was another factor entirely.

I am also interested in putting Stinger up there.  At 6.5 we are not as deep as you BillC but .7 ft is not all that great.  If the winds are not strong out of the North my guess would be that both of us will be OK, otherwise neither of us should go.

Isn't if fun to see a $2,000,000 car with a desire to swim.

SA if full of comments about one-upmanship and right now the big money bet is on BMWO.  Still, I would like to know more about how they did the simulations.

I do understand all that Brian, but have you actually sailed one anywhere near this advanced?  I am actually stunned that they got 32 mph in 10mph of wind.  I understand the physics of that as well but still 3.2 times wind speed is almost unbelievable.  If that thing could handle it it would produce 50 mph in just 15.624 mph of breeze! At that speed it would cover 6000 miles in just 5 days!

My guess is that the wing was designed with a tremendous amount of computer simulation.  Maybe even some super wind tunnel tests.  Of course I would like to know what, why, and how, but nevertheless, the engineering required to just get this thing built and up is unbelievable.

OK, I am impressed.  A 190 foot wing (oh, I mean hard sail) on a 90 foot square (almost anyway) platform that pushes the tri at 32 mph in 10 knots of breeze.  No doubt a technical accomplishment of the first magnitude.  Only questions: Can they transport it?  Is it strong enough?  What does it take to break it? Can you imagine trimming this thing?

How about some local multi-hull sailor input.  Looks to me like this is your moment to shine.

So what's SNG's response to this?  Another law suit?  A major change of venue?  If they hang on to the "no race in winds greater than 15 knots" it would appear that they are out of luck.

Amazing what several hundred million dollars will do.

A BUS to New Barunfels and the Wursfest!  Wunderbar! I did not know that. Except for the fact that I basically passed out around 8:30 in the evening I think bringing back the bus would be super.  I promise to drag my accordion along next year and use it to torture everyone on the water. You all know how far that devil instrument will carry on the water don't you?  If I lose 50 pounds I can get back into my lederhosen and then everyone will all suffer further consequences.   That should be enough to get everyone to make the trip to the fest itself.
