It's that time of the year again! The 2015 Rum Races, sponsored by Cruzan Rum are coming!
Thanks to Cruzan for the sponsorship of our most popular racing series!
This will serve as a virtual Skippers' meeting.
The Sailing Instructions are posted here:
https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/2575/2015RumRaceSI.pdf (https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/2575/2015RumRaceSI.pdf)
Changes from last year (noted as blue text in the SI's):
1. The rules about luffing other boats STILL APPLIES, but it note that it does not apply at rounding marks. The normal RRS of sailing apply here. (Refer to the three boat length zone)
Bottom line- Play nicely with each other, don't force anyone into a steel and concrete range mark and don't hit anyone, (or anyone's boat.)
2. Mark J is still gone, (much in the way that Francisco Franco is still dead). We noted that mark M54 has a large pipe protruding above the water (sometimes) in the area and mark M53 that we used for The Conundrum is missing. So, we are using Mark M55. We verified its location during the womens' regatta a few weeks ago. If it has gone missing since then or goes missing, yachts will round the coordinates given in the SI's.
3. The Starting time is moved up one hour, to 3:30:00 pm for boats with a 285 rating. All others move up by the time calculated from a 14.4 mile course. The course distance has lengthened and we think that moving the starting time earlier will allow people to get to the festivities in a more timely fashion. Last finish time of 21:00 is the same as last year.
4. The bearings and distances to the M55 mark from E and Channel mark 2 are, of course, different.
Other things to be reminded of:
- All boats must fly a flag to be scored. (white, dark, white over dark or orange)
-All Cruising Club class boats must hand in their finish times recorded to the second after the race, either on paper or electronically to me rdhunkins(at)verizon(dot)net.
-Cruising Club handicap fleet boats will have their ratings adjusted based on their finishing times for each race. I hope no one will try to sandbag: You are expected to sail as well as possible.
- The first boat to finish in each of the five classes must record their finish and the next four finishers, and turn those into me or one of the other club officers at the clubhouse afterwards.
- If the first place boat does not turn in the finishes, They will be disqualified and ineligible for a prize and points. The second place boat must then turn in the times, and so on. If you are not first, it's a good idea to note the your finish time, and the finisher ahead and behind you so you can still get prizes in case the first place finisher fails to do his duty.
That's it. I'm looking forward to seeing you all out there! Here's to summer time!
-Bob Hunkins, 2015 Fleet Captain
I like the earlier start since I start so late any way and in case of light winds need more time to finish.

Sorry I was not able to get the later boats. I took 12 minutes of video at the "H" mark, which did not come out due to a glitch. I thought I was smart being in front of the "H" mark, but everybody stayed up by the Ship Channel. Should have saved the battery for the finish!

Anyone know the finishes for the Club class on RUM#1?
Are the rum race results posted ? if so where ?

A reminder that the cruising club class(Orange flag) must also report their times as well as the first five finishers. Thank you to those who did!
At the party we did not get anyone who provided a list of the first five finishers in this class. Granted, the conditions were not optimal and many did not finish, however non of the top finshers provided finish times for anyone other than themselves.
The times reported for the club handicap were:

It was a great day on the bay. We headed out to the "E" mark to get some pictures and video, but it was too rough for our beverages. So to preserve our beverages, we returned to the start/finish line. Much nicer and made for a great place to view the race. Thanks to everyone who came out to race and participate in the Racing Seminar presented by Dave Christensen. If you would like the 100% sized photos, send me an email at sailsong@swbell.net.
Thanks to Marilyn Horton for the great after party food and selling GBCA goods. We hope everybody had a good time. Remember, your membership makes this all possible. As usual, neat photos, neat video, great race, great food, and tooooooo much free rum for the old phart. I think I did manage to get rid of the entire contents of the bottle to someone besides me, but I still had too much.

Will we have updated handicaps for the cruising class before Saturday?

Looks like a last minute issue. I counted 20 orange flags last week! I'm still waiting for the finish times to be posted from last week.

Yes, ratings have been updated as of this morning. Participants should have received an email via regatta network. Check your spam box. Sorry for the delay, sometimes it takes all week to collect finish times.
If you were in the middle of the fleet, your rating probably didn't change much, if at all. Only those at the front and tail end will change as the equation tries to bring boat ratings toward the middle.
Whether you think or wonder if your rating should or has changed, but you don't see a change in the database ratings on the day of the race - then that is your rating for the day.
Have fun tomorrow!
Rum Race #4 results have been posted.
http://www.gbca.org/Resources/Documents/2015%20Rum%20Series%20Results.pdf
Cruising Club skippers, if you have not already done so, please provide your finishing time. There should have been an e-mail from Regatta network sent out this morning, check you spam box if you didn't get it. Please reply to that message. We need these results so that the Cruising fleet has adjusyed ratings in time for the Conundrum regatta on July 26th.
Thanks!

Hmmm, this link only shows races thru rum Race #3.
Refresh your page.
Bee, that's the first thing I tried but still only show results thru Rum Race #3. Are you able to see Rum Race #4 on the results page?
Yes
Club Handicap ratings are posted with updates from Rum Race #4.
Correction to the Spin non-sprit fleet for Rum Race #4. Terrorist used a sprit and was mistakenly scored in that fleet, and did nto place in the sprit fleet.
The remaining boats were moved up by one place, and Rowdy was 5th.
For Rum Race #5, I need a little help sorting some finishes out.
Here's what I have. We are reviewing the photos from last night as well.
If you know for certain something is wrong here, please send me a message.
Please also remember to fly your class flags per the sailing instructions. Make sure they are visible to other boats, especially when you are finishing.
Thanks,

Osprey passed Bayou Baby, but I thought it was on the M55->E leg.
Yes I was the fat guy on the rail.
Bayou Baby lost tight control of her jib just after rounding E. Could not point.
OOPS, my mistake. I was thinking of Joyride, not Osprey. Did not actually pay attention to where we finished.

My apologies for not toasting Kevin Box at the after party. Talked to alot of people about him, but forgot when I got in front of the mic. The orange banner on the back of Tramp was in his honor as he bought that flag for our "Start Line".

Bob, Bayou Baby actually raced in the spinnaker class (before we lost our jib).
We carried the white flag on top and the orange below - in honor of Kevin Box.
Sorry for the confusion.
Gerhard
I am referring to Rum 5.
Thanks, I've corrected RR 5 results. Will be reflected in next update.

For Cruising Class yesterday I included Escape Hatch in the finish times for the Cruising class. I heard afterward that Escape Hatch was not in Cruising Class yesterday. You may wish to check.
Just so used to racing against them in Cruising Class I assumed they were in our class.

A few issues with Missy, so I will post the video that I am able to access. Trouble with the SD card. Finally used Jimmy Peck's card from his phone and was able to get a little more video. Hopefully will be out this evening. For 100% sized photos sailsong@swbell.net.
Last night there was some discussion about scoring a boat that placed but did not fly a class flag. It was decided that it clearly state in the rules ( VIII, Special Instructions ) That Yachts racing shall Clearly Display their class flag.
After looking at photos of last nights race, I noticed a large number of boat not carrying any class flag. This makes it rough on whoever is trying to record finishes in any given class. This brings into question are they racing or just out for an evening mass cruse with several hundred of their friends, which is OK.
Now a thought for the Icicle and next years Rum Races. Have three spinnaker classes. Two A-kites classes, bowsprit and non bowsprit, and one symmetrical w/spin pole. This thought because, non bowsprit and symmetrical kite boats sometimes get lumped together and it takes a while to sort it out. Also if you check out the photos there are a lot of A-kites on non bowsprit boats, and the two different types boats have different handling,(to some point). Anyway it's something to think about.

If we are recording boats finishing and they do not have a class flag they do not get counted. Its just that simple.

First, please define bowsprit for me. Is that a standard symmetric pole tied down to the deck? Is it a fixed prod (Cyrano, Spadefoot, Terrorist, ...). Is it a retractable articulating add on like Capt Midnight had? Once you decide what your definition is I will have further questions.
Second, this is a very bad idea. At the moment there are something like 15 sprit boats that dominate the sprit spin class. Same thing will happen with your non-bow sprit class (once you define that). Oh, and BTW, the same thing will and also does happen in the non-spin classes. As soon as you do this the focus will be on splitting the rest of the classes up. You will wind up with many pursuit classes. That's PHRF pursuit classes BTW. Then the recommendation will come that says, let's start them all at different times based on a PHRF rating range. It will go on and on.
This kind of stuff goes on in the HMR, but there I understand its one long race every year, it costs quite a bit to do it, a big variety of people show up and more importantly it is not a pursuit start. An equally bad idea would be to do away with the pursuit start. I can imagine that. Sixty or so boats of varying skill and knowledge all showing up on the start line at once. Yeah that would be fun.
This is a beer can race. Let it go.
I agree that flying your class flag the whole race is important. As someone who has to try to catch people it is nice to know when you are racing someone in your class. I also appreciate those who fly good sized flags so that it is very obvious a class flag. I have been racing orange but next week I may be nonspin or short handed PHRH so I will have to come up with a dark and a white flag.
When I raced catamarans we not only flew different colored ribbons but flew them from different places on the sail. "A" fleet red from boom, "B" fleet blue from 1st batten and "C" class yellow from second batten. That gave us two ways to identify a racer.

IX. Finishing
The first yacht in each class to cross the finish line will be the winner of the class and be required to record the next 4
places in her class by legibly recording the boat name and or sail numbers. The finishing information then must be
presented to the race chairman at the social event following the race. Remember, to score a first place, a yacht must
both cross the finish line first and record the next four finishers.
GBCA Club Handicap: The first yacht in the GBCA Club Handicap class to cross the finish line will be the winner of the
class and be required to record the next 4 places by recording the boat name and or sail numbers. The winning yacht
shall also record the finish time for the next 4 places. Each yacht finishing shall record their finish time and report it to
the Fleet Captain or another Club Officer at the post race party or by email or by posting on the discussion forum.
The race ends at 21:00. Any boat that has not finished by this time will not be scored.
------
The first three boats in the cruising club handicap fleet that crossed the finish line did not provide finish times to us. That's why they did not get points. It's incumbent on the racers to record finishers.
If you think you sailed a fast race and don't see someone in your fleet (same color flag and/or sprit config) hanging around 1/2, you should consider doing that. Worst case you find out that you're sixth or seventh by a long shot and wasted a little time getting to the party. That's the cost/benefit analysis that the skipper will have to make!
If you're not sure about it out on the water, another option is to talk to your competitors at the party, and determine who should have been first, put together the results, and get it to us there.
Let's try this again in January with the Icicle races!
Bob, did you get Sea Gypsy's time in race 8? 19:32:29
Thanks,
CJ
There was a scoring error in Rum Race 8 in the Spinnaker Non-Sprit Class. Petite Helene (#12) was missed completely. The correct order....verified by the drone video...is: 1) Picante, 2) Yikes, 3) J-24 #USA 267, 4) Petite Helene, and 5) #41940. The white flag was flying on Petite Helene but may be blocked to the drone. Thanks to all that helped make the Rum Race Series and parties so much fun!
After review of the photos, it is confirmed that Petite Helene finished 4th.
The Results have been updated to reflect this.
Thanks Bob! My crew will be happy. They sailed well.
