Nice article about the Fast 40+ class in the October issue of Sail.  Super picture of Otra Vez with Bill and his Texas crew at Cowes Week.  Bill shipped his Ker 43 to England for the regatta and the circuit - second overall in the regatta after a week of racing!

You may see a few faces on board that you recognize.

Many of us knew Roy Senior both as a great sailor and a person who helped others.  He was also very active with the Sea Scouts. He raced on several of our boats over the years and it was always great to have him on board.  I am so sorry to hear that he passed away on Friday.

Roy August Newberry, Sr., age 82, of Seabrook, Texas, entered his heavenly home on Friday, June 3, 2016. Roy's family wishes to extend many thanks to the excellent M.D. Anderson staff for the care that he received during his 16-year battle with cancer. His family will be forever grateful that the treatment afforded him many additional years of life.

Roy is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 28 years, Pam Milutin Newberry, his four children, Roy Newberry, Jr., Stephen Newberry, Pam Newberry Mullen and Ken Newberry, and beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Roy was born in Galveston, Texas on May 23, 1934. He was an outstanding contributor to the Galveston community during his years of residency on the Island. Roy raised his family in Galveston and was a well-respected businessman. He was a member of the Rotary Club where he was awarded Man of the Year, and a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he was awarded the Outstanding Citizen Award. Roy was an active member of Galveston's Central Christian Church.

After moving to Seabrook, Roy became an expert in many areas in the marine field, achieving recognition as a marine surveyor and USCG Licensed Captain. He was awarded the GBCA Yachtsman of the Year and the Sportsmanship Award. A ship's cannon was recently dedicated in honor of Roy at the Galveston Sea Base in appreciation of his devoted service to both humanity and the sport of sailing. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved playing tennis with his LYC Monday night group.

Roy was a father-figure, mentor and teacher to many, and was passionate about sharing his faith and leading people to Christ. He put that faith into action in many ways including co-founding Starfish Kenya, a mission dedicated to caring for orphans and children in need. He was the most beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Gateway Community Church, 760 Clear Lake City Boulevard, Webster, Texas 77598. Memorials may be made in Roy's name to Starfish Kenya or Gateway Community Church at this address.

I have no idea what this new race is all about. 

However in the old days some of us were serious about bringing the best chili and other opened the can and threw it in the pot so they met the rules of having a chili cook off entry.  Many teams dressed up in costume or as a teams for the cook off. 

Now racing the next day ... that was serious ..  Noooooo!  Too Much Fun!  Too Much Rum!

Maybe it is like the old Chili Cup - 1 afternoon chili cook-off and 1 day of fun racing.  Now those were the days!  Also had the Gumbo Cup.  There are posters at GBCA I think from these.  I know I still have one somewhere.

Thanks for the update and link to the new website.  Much easier to understand what the plan is.

What a great site and proposed building.  I have a difficult time imagining it from where the museum is today.

Do you know if they have raised the initial $1.3M required to keep the Letter of Intent with the Port?  I have not heard any news for a couple years.  Any idea of when construction starts or completes?

As you say, it is a great place to visit. Incredible collection of items.  They really do need a new place though.  So if you hear about them fundraising or a capital campaign, please do not be shy.

I always wonder why they and other maritime related organizations do not work out an agreement at the  empty Bayport cruise ship terminal.  The museum, port related organizations, and the Galveston Bay Foundation and other environmental or maritime focused organizations could all co-exist in a great space.  Maybe Galveston's Nautical Antiques could have a presence.  Add a restaurant and we have a "go to " place that rivals the Boardwalk.

Hey - Keels and Wheels could consider a new venue with lots of parking and space.

Thanks.  I thought I had been using the 2015 approved calendar, but I guess not.  Sorry for the confusion.

It looks like the racing schedule has changed.  Was a notice of some kind sent out or even announced on this Board?  I know some of the one design fleets have used the old calendar for their circuit planning.  For example the GBCA Spring Regatta is no longer listed but is currently a J105 Circuit race.  The Performance Cup as noted above was moved from September to March.  Correct?  Any other changes.

Hope for more wind tomorrow than we have down here today.

The boat will have to be removed even if not a danger to navigation because it has fuel on board which is an environmental hazard.  I have talked to the USCG about this before and it is the owner's responsibility to remove this potential hazard.  I am sure insurance covers it.

Just talked to Michel the owner and skipper of Petite Louis - the old Triple Play.  They won their class.  He said winds could have been stronger.

This is the old Triple Play.  I talked to the new owner this past week.  They were doing well in the race, but as noted above lost their rudder at about 7am on Saturday.  He was just about to reef the main when it happened.  That might have saved the rudder, but who knows.  I believe the boat is at Rockport being evaluated to determine whether it can have a temporary fix and be motored back to Seabrook or needs to stay there until a new rudder is installed.  No injuries -  no issues.

Looks like a Viper vs the VX One Design for the Rum Race tonight.  Wind has picked up a little bit, but still light.  Should be fun.  Both double handed.
