The Old Phart is really looking forward to this. Stinger is in an excellent position to go out and take her 3rd Texas Navy Trophy. Looking at the list of registrants one would think that there should be a lot more competition. Good boats with great sailors so far, but so few. Come on guys sign up. This should be a really great regatta.
Does anyone have a hotel recomendation for TRW? I understand the marina is back in order but the Yacht club is still closed.. party plans?
We had a great time last year, GBCA put on a great regatta!
Kathy Rodgers is confirming a group rate with Comfort Inn as I type. She'll post info as soon as the deal is done.
Happy Hour parties and Awards will be at the pool/palapa bar area all three days. Daily awards, snacks, beer and rum bar Thursday and Friday after racing. Awards banquet Saturday with dinner, beer and, you guessed it - rum bar ;D
ATTENTION TEXAS RACE WEEK PARTICIPANTS! HOTEL GROUP RATE INFORMATION!
The Comfort Inn and Suites at Stewart Beach will again be the RC Committee headquarters for Texas Race Week 2009. We have held 10 rooms (double beds) and 5 rooms (king beds) all non-smoking at the group rate of $119.99 for the nights of Thursday (7/23), Friday (7/24) and Saturday (7/25) with departure on Sunday under the group name ?Texas Race Week 2009.?
All participants will be responsible for making your own reservations and following the payment and cancellations policies of the Comfort Inn & Suites. You must call their direct number at (409)766-7070 and tell them you want to make reservations under group name ?Texas Race Week 2009.?
The cut off deadline for reservations will be Friday, July 17, 2009 (or until rooms run out whichever comes first). The regular rate for rooms run about $154.99/night, so make sure you make your reservations early and get in on the group rate cut price.
For those of you who stayed before you know the amenities of the hotel...the Texas Waffle continental breakfast area every morning! The hotel is also about 5 minutes from the Galveston Yacht Basin Marina, so easy access for your crew to stagger back after the post-race parties and get to the boat in the morning to start a new race day!
DON?T DELAY! CALL NOW TO MAKE YOUR TRW HOTEL RESERVATIONS! ;D
gbCa Race week.
Thinking of bringing BANJO GIRL down for Race Week.
How can we get more of the "C" in GBCA boats to come out?
I have a Magma grill. I'll see if John will lets us strap it on the stern pulpit of Millie X.
Looking at the entrant list I am amazed that there are so few boats. Is this becoming a spin-only-big-boat series? Come on out folks. The bar is great the food is great the docking is great---and---unlike the bay the water is actually very clear. What's not to like? ::)

::)
NOT!!
You're going to be too busy to be grillin anyway.
Just like last year?s TRW, the regatta will consist of day races starting at HSC marker 11 and heading offshore for various triangles and out-and-back courses. The Spinnaker fleet courses will include more windward-leeward work, while Non-Spinnaker boats will receive a more gentlemanly course conducive to good reaching/trolling speeds. We?ll do our best to make sure everyone gets back in plenty of time for the pool party.
Nightly pool parties from 6-9PM will feature NY Pizzeria on Thursday, assorted gourmet sausage selections from the Grill Master on Friday and a Seafood Buffet for the Grand Awards on Saturday. All this and the open Rum Bar will be yours for the $175.00 entry fee that includes 2 event passes. Additional passes for all three days are only $25.00.
See the NOR and sign-up at: http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubs/gbca.html (http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubs/gbca.html)
Kevin,
Forget RC and other such duties and leave that to someone else. Bring out that big ole heavy C&C and sail a genlemanly race with us civilized folks. ...truthfully I'd love to see some cruiser / racers come out and sail a spin course. I'm working on getting some medium to heavy cruiser racers out. With any luck...
JZ
JZ,
That day is coming, my man. Doing Race to the Border this year was awesome and I?ll never forget last year?s offshore Conundrum.
Did I mention that we expect to have the limited edition GBCA Tervis Tumbler ready for sale at Texas Race Week?
Stay cool!
Kevin
Regarding participation; this is a great regatta and GBCA does a super job. On a fun scale i'd say it's easily at the top of the list - and Galveston is a super location to bring the family.
99% of the Texas sailing community (inland yacht clubs) have no idea it exists. Austin Yacht Club is facing a low-water issue with most of the boats pulled - hobie 33's, Olson 30's. Those would be great boat to get to this regatta. I'm sure these clubs (and others) would put a blurb about Texas Race Week in their newsletter or on their website.
Thursday is hard for most - perhalps it would be wise to make it a 2-day (Friday / Sat) event for the cruising fleet?
In any case - I could see this turning into a premier event.. currently it's a very well kept secret
I've got some friends from Fort Worth Boat Club that are probably coming down. ...not bringing any boats but will hopefully be filling up crew of a few cruising boats we're trying to get entered.
The only think I'd like to see changed is longer courses (if there is any wind) Possibly even an overniter this is part of the "offshore" series, no?
We considered loading back up on the boat Friday after the party shuts down for a night cruise. I think that of the 12 people on our boat only two or three have been off-shore.
I think those are good suggestions but for me the current format is better. Last year we got back to the dock early enough to relax.. take a shower and hang out at the boat before hitting the pool. This year the family will be there so cupons will be earned if we arrive early.
Quick addition; the suggestion was made that we bring down a Viper or two for people to play on after they get off the race-course. We think that's a great idea.. a little high velocity match-racing just outside the bulk-head?
We're going to bring the boats, if the weather cooperates it's on!
You can't beat a better party price than $25/for 3 days of free food and rum.....BUT you HAVE to purchase those tickets! We'll begin selling them at the Skipper's meeting and you can buy them at the Post Race Party on Thursday (better to buy them early to help us with headcounts)....This year you will need to have your ticket each day at the poolside entry to receive that day's party wristband. This wristband lets the bartendar and food server know that you receive free Rum/Beer and Food for that day. We'll have a new wristband for each day so you don't have to hold on to the same wristband for 3 days...just hold on to that same ticket. ;D
700 views to this thread but a very thin fleet. I hope some more boats join in on the fun soon!

Kudos to Jody on another fine newsletter with the composition provided by wordsmith Box, the superwoman efforts of KathyR and the rest of the hard working GBCA volunteers.
Karma +1.
I'm going to print a few color copies to help spread the word...
Definitely a wonderful Cannon. Only problem is that Jody put this picture of this strange Old Phart on it with some kind of reference to a Mr. something or the other. I think that guy's name is actually Bee but then what the hell do I know.
Anyway, you guys are going to have to beat Kevin this time. The Old Phart will be in physical therapy for this one. If he feels good enough, he might try to get the BW to haul him down for a party or two but that's the best he will be able to do. That in and of itself is very very iffy.
Best thing would bee (sp) if the rest of you worthless boat owner would sign up to make this into the wonderful event it usually is. I can definitely vouch for the excellence of the rum, the beer, the sailing, and the fun.
What's not to like?
Just an FYI.
The cannon on the flag on the Cannon, as it were, it one of what eventually was called the Twin Sisters. They were actually found by a friend of mine, Dr Patrick Wagner (MD), from my home town (Shiner). He devoted most of his life to finding artifacts like this and was pretty successful.
Pat's father, Frank, delivered me.
Looking at AccuWeather.com it looks like the Texas Race Week will have some realy nice weather. Might be some rain on Friday & Saturday but then that might just be refreshing! Sure would like to see more boats signed up at this year's event. Really would love to see more crusing boats come on out. Looks like Ms Rogers has the event planned and cookin'!
Just a note as to why I sponsor the race: I love sailboat racing! No better place to watch a race than from the start line! Scott started working with GBCA and Greg Casmayor and I did not start until Scott and I bought Tramp and Duane Bez was commadore. We have really enjoyed all the crew that have come to work on the RC boat since we have been hosting and look forward to many more years.
So get the boat ready and come on down to what will be a really fun three days of racing.
Oh yea, I will have the camera and I promise it will be in focus!

Hey! Where's all our racers?! You still have time to enter TRW, so come on and let's see those entry numbers increase. T-shirts have just arrived, so they will be for sale at the TRW Skipper's meeting this Friday. Artwork is one of a kind designed by Don Lewis in Austin. We will also have posters for sale (each skipper will receive a poster in your packet). Bring your cash and/or checkbooks and purchase this year's TRW T-shirt and posters. ALSO, if you are planning to race and attend the parties you will need to purchase the TRW Event Tickets ($25 each) to receive all the free food, rum and beer for the 3 post race parties planned for this year's TRW. We will be checking tickets at poolside where you will receive a wristband for that day's post party event, so be sure and get your event ticket early!
Galveston Yacht Basin also has available slips with electricity, so call Rita and get your slip reserved. We also have some rooms reserved at Comfort Inn Suites at East Beach (see previous posts for details) with deadline for reservations being this Friday, July 17th.
Let's make this another great year for TRW, so spruce up those boats, call your crew and come out and play with us in Galveston!
Besides the long courses out to platforms and back, we have historically thrown in a beach course down to the Flagship for W/L action. We can?t run the Flagship course anymore since the road to it is missing and I think it?s been condemned, or at least it should be.
That?s OK because the boys down in the lab have created a new one that?ll have tacticians slapping their foreheads. It?s called ?OY!? Of course, there?s the double ?OY!? and even the triple ?OY!?, but let?s not get ahead of ourselves.
Although the skipper?s meeting is this Friday, registration stays open until the 20th for those that just won?t enter without a good weather forecast. There?s a late fee after this Thursday, so it?ll cost you to see that ?hole card?.
Suggest we continue to have some kind of racing action in front of the beaches for the beach spectators and the Galveston economy. Has this event been advertised?
Christopher,
That's exactly what the three beach courses (OY!) do. Racing will be visible from East Beach. It just can't be as up-close as the Flagship was for obvious reasons. Hopefully one of these new piers going up will be someone we can partner with next year for spectators.
The race is advertised and we usually wind up with big color pictures in the Daily News. Sometimes even above the fold.
Notices have been added to the Official Notice Board.
Crew can check out the sandwich delivery info and let your skipper know how much better you'll perform fueled by a chicken, spinach, portobello and mozzarella sandwich on fresh pizza bread 8)
Reminder: competitors briefing will be held at the GBCA Office at 1900 Friday, July 17.
Will have my external drive will all of the pictures I have taken of GBCA races so bring you thumb drives! I will be dishing out TRW pictures as well!

Thanks John. Too Cool.
And for any of you sailors that might be taking some pics before the starts, go by and get some of our RC on Tramp. They love their pictures taken too!
Regarding the Poolside parties...
Just a reminder to everyone that the only OPEN ENTRANCE to the poolside area is the gate located facing inside the marina. Since the restaurant building is now closed they are keeping those front entrance gates locked. You can park in the big parking lot of GYC, but you will have to walk around to the gate entrance facing the marina.
AND!!! Don't forget to buy your TRW Event Ticket. We will be checking everyone as you enter, so you can purchase the tickets on Thursday if you have not gotten yours already. Remember we can only accept cash or checks..no credit cards please.
We're packing up the cases of rum and the food is all planned, so get your event tickets at poolside!
See You Thursday! Good luck to everyone on the water! ;D
TRW Event Tickets will be sold tonight (Tuesday, 7/21) at the GBCA Board meeting between 7pm-8pm only. I will be at the GBCA clubhouse, so avoid the Thursday rush and come buy!! Cash or checks please!
And YES I will also sell you a TRW T-Shirt tonight if you come by the GBCA clubhouse between 7pm-8pm..........
Check out the snappy TRW shirts. You know you want one, and so does your entire crew. A mere $20. That's for a six color print.
Get them while they last during Texas Race Week. Woman sizes available.
How was it out there?? I need stories!! I am sure results will be up soon. Missing racing is one thing but missing the party is a lot harder to handle!!! Just as boats were finishing I was going under the knife to clean out he infection in my leg. Everything good here should be home fri or sat!!!! It's sad how good of a job we did guessing the finishes from our heat and beer addled position on Stinger. Especially sad when I look at the results... ;D
Good job everyone, esp the race committee.
So, what's the score? For the ones that can't be there.

Thanks to GBCA and all the volunteers for putting on a good event. Special Thanks to "THE BROTHERS" for all the efforts and great pictures from the event.
Cheers,
+12 (Dulcinea and crew!)
Again, first class event. The competition was outstanding, rum bar epic and well.. i may be back to normal by Friday.
I had crew from around the state and everyone left with big grins. No doubt they will help get the word out about this great event.
Thanks to Kathy, Kevin and the lot.
Good sailing, great food and friends, fabulous weekend! Thanks to all involved.

Thanks for everything - Race Week was a lot of fun, there was plenty of rum, the pool was great, a bunch of new and old friends ... plenty of great pictures. See y'all next time!
I'm glad that everyone had such a great time of racing, swimming and drinking! ;) And don't forget about the new TRW Signature Drink...the MAR-KAT! Recipe will be forthcoming in the next GBCA newsletter! Just a hint to everyone though...the drink tastes so much better in a GBCA Tervis Tumbler! You can find information about the new order of tumblers under General Discussion.
I still have some TRW lady t's left (Large and a few XL) as well as some men's t-shirts (medium and large only). I'll more than likely put the shirts out during rum race parties along with the regular GBCA Logo Shirts which we still have on hand. Stop by and pick one up!
Happy Sailing!

Just be sure you don't get a bad ice cube in your drink, right MAR and KAT? :-X
John Lacy again exceeded everyone?s expectations and burned a photo CD for each skipper with about 1000 pictures. Putting away the sound system and RC gear on Sunday, I popped it in and watched it on the club TV. Great pictures.
Thanks again to Event Chair Kathy Rodgers and all the volunteers that made the regatta a success. The only miscalculation in planning was on the quantity of rum. We had to buy an extra case on Saturday. Enough rum for 1273 1.5oz shots was poured at the palapa bar over three days. I actually tried the Mar-Kat on the last night. It was quite good. Good luck to everyone on their recovery.
