It's a bye week for CLRA, so anyone interested in getting out on the water should consider bay racing this Wednesday. We use the GBCA Icicle SI's and add 6 hours to the start time.

Reverse course is proposed for this Wednesday.

Join other Galveston Bay sail boaters for a great charity event, the Waterford Yacht Club Regatta Benefiting Lighthouse Charity Team. This year the race takes place on Saturday, October 1, and is followed by a full evening of festivities - all in support of an important local charity!

A special trophy, "The Wheel", will go to the wining yacht club. In addition to taking The Wheel, the winning skipper will be able to direct a $1000 donation to his or her favorite local charity.

This will be a 10 mile pursuit style race in Galveston Bay.

Some of the CLRA PHRF skippers are planning an informal race on the bay tomorrow when CLRA has a bye week and we want invite all like-minded sailors to join us.

We will follow the standard course for this year's Icicle Series, and add 6 hours to the Icicle starting time. That puts most boats starting between 5:45 and 6:15 PM.

No racing on the lake this week but the bay is wide open! All boats are welcome.

General Discussion / Green Flash on Saturday Night!
July 24, 2015, 12:03:55 PM
Andy Upchurch, who is the Andy in "Andy & The Dreamsicles", a band that has played for GBCA several times and really enjoys our events, asked me to share this event with the club. From his press release:

Saturday July 25:  You don't want to miss this‼  It's the "MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM" and FULL MOON PARTY with Andy & the Dreamsicles‼  Under the big palapa at the world-famous Topwater Grill in San Leon, Texas.  This is the best place on the whole Texas coast to see the Green Flash.  It happens right at sundown.  Everyone will be looking for it, shots in hand!   6:00 – 10:00.

Andy assures me that a green flash will be visible from the Topwater Grill palapa.

General Discussion / TackTick or Velocitek ProStart?
December 26, 2011, 10:34:08 PM
The ProStart seems to offer a lot more functionality for a bit more money, does anyone have any experience with them? I'm going to be racing a J/22 this year, are there any class rules that would keep me from using it?

I don't think I need to ask for opinions in this forum but I will anyway...

General Discussion / Skill or Luck?
November 28, 2010, 09:34:38 PM
http://boingboing.net/2010/11/08/dainish-sailors-make.html

A sailboat entering a harbor on an island in the Baltic during a serious storm. I've watched the video a dozen times and I'm still not sure if it was skill or luck. It does look like the skipper was positioning the boat so that the waves wouldn't push it into the breakwater.

Too many boats to manage. From the same people that make Lasers, a Zuma - a 13' dinghy with daggerboard. Lots of fun to sail. It comes with a small trailer.

See http://www.laserperformance.com/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=505&Itemid=382 for a description.
A similar model is at http://www.sailingtexas.com/szumau.html

Lou Vest is a HSC pilot with an interest in photography. Make sure you select "HQ" on the YouTube control panel for high quality.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Xstd3_0usI

His description of the video:
A time lapse video made by setting a camera to take photos at six second intervals during a trip outbound on the Houston Ship Channel. I used Quicktime to assemble over 2000 individual photos into a 3 minute movie representing an actual time of over 3 1/2 hours. The ship was only moving at 5-6 knots for the first half of the trip and up to 10 knots in the open areas away from the docks. The journey begins just below the Port of Houston turning basin at the end of the channel and continues down to Morgan's Point at the head of Galveston Bay. We still had 32 miles to go to get out to the pilot station in the Gulf of Mexico at that point. The ship is a Panamax tanker 600 feet long by 106 feet wide.
