Messages - Hamburger No 1

H2 was one of the culprits with the masthead light. We didn't do that to confuse or irritate the Stinger (that's just a fringe benefit😀). We had a short in the regular light circuit and tripped the breaker a few times which resulted in no lights at all. Then we switched to the masthead to have at least something that distinguishes us from the Black Pearl.

It's all fixed now thanks to some super fast work by Hayes Rigging.

The Racing Rules of Sailing do codify the throw-out: Appendix A2.1 states: Each boat's score shall, subject to rule 90.3 (b), be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score........It is expressly permitted to change this rule in the NOR or SI, but if both are silent on the matter the throw-out is included. I know, because I have on one occasion many years ago lost a regatta on this issue, where the race committee had not intended to have a throw-out, but did not specifically state that exception, and the ultimate winner pointed that out and prevailed. That was a GBCA race, no less! ;). Bu-huu!

Shawn - you described well what planing is. But the question is what distinguishes a planing from a non-planing hull. Ok, so generally a planing hull is relatively flat and the boat is relatively light. But different boats plane at different wind speeds. So, I think the question is perfectly valid: when is a boat considered a 'planing' boat? I've had the J/109 on a plane. It was scary as heck and I still want to claim that the boat isn't a planing boat. Let's get an answer from all our naval architects! :)

I like the new course a lot!! Only question I have relates to water depth. My Navionics says it's 6'-9" there. Of course, that's a bit conservative, but we do have boats that draw quite a bit more than that! Would hate to have to waive at all those boats going by as I'm wallowing in the mud.........

Anybody interested in postponing RR7 - maybe to 9/16? Windalert says 27kn gusting to 46kn for Saturday afternoon. Only riggers and sailmakers like those conditions.

Scott: Let's make sure that we actually use the available sophistication of the ORC system. I've had a long exchange with Dobbs about the shortcomings of ORC in HMR and he actually agreed that we should have applied it differently. It's a learning process. Let's keep learning. It's all good!

Regarding the kite measurements: I've heard that there are several calculation method for kite area that end up resulting in different sizes for the same kite dimensions (I guess they account differently for the shape of the sail in areas that aren't directly measured?). Where is it determined which method PHRF is supposed to use? What if you have a sail that measures ok using one method and too large using another?

I'm sure everybody will be shocked to know that I disagree with tossing the first two races - particularly considering the hardy souls that did Race 1 (I wasn't one of those......). Surely we can get the participants of that race to publish their recollection as to the results here to get agreement on the finish order. We can then populate the series results with that. This is supposed to be casual!!

Regarding the issue of the class flag: I agree that the SI's are clear on the issue and we can make the case that folks that don't have the right flag should not be scored. Nonetheless I'm in favor of allowing considerable leniency in enforcing this particular rule, because this is a rum race series and not a world championship. The emphasis is on casual and fun. The main objective of the flag is to let the winners identify who's in their class and needs to be listed in the finish order. This has worked without much ado for many years. Do we really want to disqualify somebody because, e.g., they lost the flag during the race, or the winner didn't think somebody's flag was 'dark' enough or too red instead of pink or such? Yes, it meets the letter of the SI, but I want to claim that is violates the spirit of the event. I see little wrong with allowing the winner of the class to use their experience/discretion in determining whether a finisher is in their class and should be scored. Are there really mistakes being made? I can certainly say that when I saw Uzi coming through the finish with his kite up I didn't have to check his flag to see if he was in my class. I didn't look in his case or that of the other finishers in my class. Let's remind those who aren't using the right flag to fix that for next time, but I think it's over the top to find it necessary to disqualify somebody for this (maybe just dock them the rum?). Would you really be proud of your result if you got beaten on the race course and win on this technicality?

Let's remember the casual nature of this series!

Hamburg II is official, as well! Surprisingly uncomplicated process with excellent response time! The whole thing took just a few days.
