Title: Texas Race Week 2014 - July 24-26
Post by: ShakenNotStirred on June 04, 2014, 04:00:25 PM
Several have asked me what is going on with Texas Race Week this year, so here is some preliminary info before the NOR is posted.

The format will be similar to last year. That is, day racing out of Galveston, with starts and finishes in the vicinity of HSC 11.
As for the social events, here is what we have so far:
Thursday - burger bar at The Rum Shack on the Seawall (same as last year).
Friday - TBD.  Don't have anything lined up for Friday yet.  Maybe just a happy hour somewhere, and dinner on your own.  Unless a big sponsor comes along.  Still working on that.
Saturday - Awards party at the Texas Seaport Museum and Elissa.  Catered by Bennos.  Entertainment by Andy and the Dreamsicles featuring the Kick-Ass Brass. Beer and open rum bar.

Social tickets will be $35, which gets you into all events including food at the Rum Shack, and food and drinks at the Awards party.

I will be soliciting sponsors, but in the meantime tell your sailmaker, rigger, chandlery, etc. that they should REALLY support this FUN event.

Oh and we have our returning major sponsor again this year... Three Fat Brothers!
Thanks John, Scott, and the other brother from the same mother!

Has anyone approached Quantum, North, Igloo, Academy, West Marine about sponsoring this event.  Considering we all eventually end up at West Marine....I've got a good buddy who is well connected to sponsorship.  Let me check....fingers crossed...

Galveston Yacht Basin has a special rate of $1.50 a foot. Call Stephanie at 409-765-3003 and mention GBCA's Texas Race Week.

Is the Yacht Basin not interested in hosting the Rum & Pool Party that was a highlight of TRW in years past?

Texas Race Week is only 25 days away, but early registration ends tonight. Save $40 and sign up today. Also get your event tickets. The cost of one event ticket is equal to the Benno's meal alone. This is a great value and will also be great parties. Sign up today! The event venue is:
Thursday night - Rum Shack on Seawall Blvd.  Event pass gets you a drink and burger.
Friday night - Happy Hour at Tsunami Bar on the Strand. Sponsored by C&C Sailmakers! Appetizers and 2 drinks.
Saturday night - Texas Seaport Museum and Tall Ship Elissa.  Event pass gets you free beer, rum and food catered by Benno's!
Live music by Andy and the Dreamsiciles and the Kick-Ass Brass.
Thanks to all of our sponsors for helping to make Texas Race Week and GBCA "The Place to Race". Sign up today!

Has anyone found reasonably priced accommodations for crew on the east end of the island?

The cheapest I have seen is the Scottish Inn on Ferry Rd. (next to the ferry landing...1/2 mile as the crow flies). Expedia (thru tripadvisor) had a room with two queens (4 adults max) for $132 + tax. The number is 409-762-3311.

Yes. This year we will be getting the lunches from Sunflower Bakery.  I'll have an order form for you to complete next week, and submit at the Skippers meeting.
Cost of each lunch is about $8 plus tax $9 including tax, and includes a sandwich, chips, pickle and 2 cookies I think.

Everything is coming together nicely. Just need you to sign up!

Where is Aeolus? Alert? Mojo? Chiron? Athena? Alessandra? Milli? Sea Nymph? Figaro? Firewater? Lil Bit o? Escape Hatch? Royal Crescent? Big D? Sea Gypsy? Wheeee Dog? Be Easy? Terrorist? Good News? Seute Deern? Rowdy? Phoenix? ONO? Picante? Petite Helene? Pingo? Infiniity? Cyrano? Hamburg? Cayuse? The Mule? Cache? La Dame? Joan?

I will have lunch order forms posted soon.  Fill out one for each day you want a lunch on the water (Thursday/Friday/Saturday).  I'll deliver the lunches in the morning to the yacht basin or Harbor House.

Tech t-shirts will be available at the Skippers Meeting, and at the Rum Race party (if there's any left!).  Both short sleeve and long sleeve.

This is so much easier to plan if we know what to expect, so if you are going to do the race, go ahead and sign up. You won't be disappointed.

Also if you plan to come to the parties, please sign up for an event pass now so we can get a good head count for the caterers, etc.

Thanks!  And looking forward to next week!

The weather is shaping up to be a perfect TRW! Chris Dees and Wyatt Smith have gone out and found a new mark for a SW wind and two different courses for the race down the beach (long/short). The after-race parties are shaping up nicely. Thursday is at the "Spot" overlooking the Gulf. Friday's party at the "Tsunami Bar" is sponsored by C&C to honor Ed Christie. Bring your best "Ed" story to help Butch Boos honor Ed's legacy. Saturday's award party at the Elissa will be lots of fun with Benno's Seafood and live music. Thanks to our sponsors, the $35 event tickets are a great value.
I have seen a few boat at SSY getting bottom jobs lately. Aeolus got out of the yard last week. Sea Nymph and Rapide this week. Hopefully they will make a stealth move to join TRW  8). They look pretty fast!!
Come out and join us for this great regatta. We will have "Missy" flying. Sign up today ;D.

One week away and only 38 event tickets sold.  Looks like we might have to downsize this year.
And only 13 boat signed up. Hard to justify all the work and expense for a turnout like that. :-[ ???
But for those that are participating....
This one will be a blast!   :)  8) ;D (It may be the last one for awhile!)

Seriously, I have to finalize the catering tomorrow so if you are going to come to the party(s), please sign up!  Thanks!

Lunch order form here (https://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/regatta_uploads/8734/TRWLunchOrderForm1.pdf).

Fill out one form for each day you want lunches.  Each lunch comes with sandwich, chips, pickle and cookie. Yum!

Submit the form at the Skippers meeting Friday.
If you pay at the skippers meeting with a credit card, don't fill out the CC information on the form; we will swipe your card at the meeting.
We will accept cash, checks, or credit cards.

We will deliver the lunches to the Yacht Basin dock E and Harbor House marina between 0830 and 0900 each morning.  Please be there.

I'm an experienced crew looking for a boat to race with.  I grew up as a Ragnot sailing at HYC for Gus Kolius and have skipper D+ rating.

Please consider using the Race Q tracking app each day of the race. If you don't have it, get it from the Apple App Store or non Apple equivalent.

With much regret, only the Spin Boats were able to finish within the designated time limits and a shorten course. Tramp was able to anchor just outside of Marker 5A and shortened the course by almost three mile. With over two hours of no wind, even a shorten course could not finish the Non-Spins or the Cruising Class Boats within the designated time limits :(.
