Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: Veracruz 2014

I vote in favor of bringing in back!!!  Ive done the race four times and its been long enough that I think Im dumb enough to do it again!!!!  Thats a pretty tough 600+ miles to sail but a heck of a lot of fun once you get there!!!!  The city goes all out to accomodate the boats and crews.  I will be filling out my LYC survey shortly and will definitely vote to bring it back.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: Race to the Border

The entry form is posted on the web site at www.racetotheborder.com.  This is a great race for cruising class to jump on board and race offshore.  This should be a great year with plently of docking with the shrimp boat basin being cleared out.

Keep checking the web site for updates.  The kick off party is April 13th at HSH office.  Make plans to come by for free drinks and food!!!

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: GBCA Cruising Class

I know the cruising class uses totally different parameters for establishing ratings but under PHRF-GB the non spin formula used is in no way meant to rate a spin boat vs a non spin boat.   The non spin factor is formula based and it's only to be used for racing non spin boats vs other non spin boats.

General Discussion / Re: From the GBCA mailbox

Thats pretty cool to learn more about the history of GBCA and hear from people that have the old trophies, stories, etc.  I have alot of my dads old trophies from the 70's and 80's.  I think the oldest that I have found is a 1972 or 73 IOR Championship regatta trophy.  Back then the trophies were silver platters, trays or silver cups!!  There really nice but a pain to keep polished which is why they were in storage at my parents house for years!!!

Keep up the great work, Chris!!!

We will have the Mojo Protector shadowing the race from the start to Port Aransas.  Hopefully it wont be necessary but if anyone is in the need of any emergency assistance you may trying calling them on Channel 16.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun trip to Port Aransas!!!!

$80 is a very cheap entry fee!!!!  Look around the country, we have it very good here on GB with our cheap entries and very easy logistics to have a regatta.  I just wish it were one day with four races and be done!!

Yes, it is going to happen.  Galveston to Gulfport, Ms.  Stay tuned for more information but you can count on it next year.  Memorial Day weekend start.

I thought Turkey Day was a one day event the last few years??  Considering bringing Psyched out but was hoping for a one day event!!  At least that is the Texans bye week!!!!!!

The HYC one design excluded boats from racing!!  Didn't see the two Melges 32s, two 1d35's, king 40 or J-122 invited out there!!  Let along the two j120's.  That would make a great phrf A class.

I love the J Fest idea. Any time we can get a top notch sponsor like J Boats SW to sponsor an event that is a positive thing in my opinion.  I also agree the one design concept is a great event as well, but it did exclude a lot of potential race boats from participating.

Great pictures!  I really like the one of us on Psyched with the blooper up!!!  That blooper was made in the late 70's!!!!!!

Bringing out the blast from the past!!!  Psyched is coming out of retirement sat night and will fly the colors!!!!  This will be the first time we have sailed it in about 6 years!!!  See y'all out there!!!

I will admit that we on mojo did not have a flag on the Backstay.  It was an oversight on my part and unfortunately there is absolutely nothing extra on a Melges 32 that resembles a white flag.  Hopefully most in the spin fleet realizes that a Melges 32 is racing spinnaker!!!!  Next time we will have a white flag!!

General Discussion / Re: Experiment with a-kite
May 19, 2011, 10:07:40 PM
The mast on Radiance is identical to the French 105's except that it is powder coated. Exact same extrusion hardware, etc. The "French/Sparcraft" masts are tapered the difference is the extrusion itself is stiffer than the Hall US spars. Many of the local 105's have the same "San Fran" bend they just don't know it!!!!

As for the phrf penalty there are many factors like pole length and kite size that will determine the penalty. Remember phrf discourages modifications so they typically over penalize for them. You carry the penalty upwind as well eventhough it is only benefiting you downwind!!!
