Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: HYC Offshore

I think jeff agrees cost is a positive when you look at Galveston bay regattas. I would vote
To get rid of regatta network!!!  7% to process entries is alot of money that gbca is missing out on!!!  And yes I have run many regattas and had to do the paperwork myself. It is a hassle but no that overbearing.

I love Texas race week and agree it could be a premier regatta.  I'm going to miss it this year we will be in Newport with the Melges but I hope it is a big success.

I think one of the big issues with the overnights is a lack of marketing. I would love to see the three yacht clubs get together and really push the Texas navy trophy and promote the overnights more to get more participation.

Not sure if it's possible but what about finishing the race in the bay ???  I know for me the thought of 4 hrs of motoring each way is a big negative on doing the race. We used to race down the ship channel in the Rebel Cup where we sailed to Galveston twice in the 90 mile bay race. I know post 9/11 things are tougher with shipping traffic but just a thought!!!

Why do we need a skippers meeting???  How about a virtual skippers metting with si's posted a week before the event. Questions can be asked and posted on the web site and the rc can respond to each question by the start.

Actually I'm a Melges lover jeff!!!!  I agree phrf usually gets it right in the end and I wasn't referring to the rum race not being fair!!  It was two tight spinnaker reaches the 111 better beat the 1d35 in those conditions!!!!

I do like the 111 though. Very nice boat to sail!!

The rating for the 111 is 36 on Galveston Bay, that is what we started the icicle race with as well.  In Charleston this weekend I am sailing on Gambler the J-122 against a J-111 that rates 42 there.   My personal opinion is the 111 is not going to be able to sail to a 36 rating against well sailed J-122's and 1D35's on Galveston Bay.  I can officially complain about PHRF ratings now, I served my time (10+yrs)!!!!!!!!

Basically all the boats rounded the wrong weather mark except Otra vez. They protested the entire class and two boats protested Otra vez. Otra vez won the protest and moved from second to first and they decided to add .5 PTS to the class.  Seems like if boats round the wrong mark that should be a dsq!!!  I'm sure there will be more discussion about this when the crew posts some info.

Race To The Border is going to be a good one this year.  Planning is under way and should be a lot of fun.  We need to spread the word about it and get more boats to come out and enjoy the fun!!!!  The updated web site should be up soon and the kick off party will be in March.  More details to follow soon.

We have mojo in new Orleans this weekend doing the LPRC. Many people have told me over the last few days about Mardi GRAS regatta. I believe it is the weekend after fat Tuesday. Would be a good regatta for a road trip it's definitely a good time here!!!!

What an incredible stretch of nice weather we're having.

Saturday and Sunday forecast looks good. High of 83, clear.  8)
Translation: One less excuse. It really doesn't get much better than that.

Bee: got your 5 J105s...who is missing? Game on.
PHRF Handicap: come out and play, we have rigs to round

No matter what you float, it should be a great weekend

Seriously???  The PHRF boats are going around rigs????  From a racing standpoint I hate that idea, takes away a lot of the tactical components of the sport.  From a business standpoint I like it, just hope nobody gets hurt!!!!!

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: 1 day vs. 2 day regattas
September 17, 2010, 11:43:17 AM
I like both the one day and two day events.  I think the winter series regattas should be one day, the fun regattas (single, mixed doubles, ladies day, etc) should be one day events and the larger regattas two day events.

The problem I am having now is two day events when the Texans are playing good football!!!!  This is the first time in 9 years but you wont see me on the bay this Sunday!!!  Hopefully this trend continues through Jan.!!!!!

The PHRF non spin factor is in no way suppose to fairly rate a non spin boat vs a spin boat.  The formula was derived years ago by Galveston Bay PHRF and in no way was ever intended to evenly handicap boats spin vs non spin.

This being said I do believe what Kevin Box is doing with the club handicap is fantastic and seems to be getting boats out.  For rum race purposes I dont see too big of a problem with the system since the ratings for the next race are adjusted based upon the results whether it is a spin boat or a non spin boat.  If you get a race where the wind is just right and you cant carry a spin but on one leg on a reach then I bet the non spin boats would have the advantage based purely on the PHRF-GB ratings.

Our start time on Psyched used to be around 7:28 in the old Friday night races.   I recall finishing a few of the rum races around 11:30 ish.  We would get to Crocs just in time for last call (Where Valdos is now), that was before Seabrook Beach Club opened.

I agree, I love sailing these things at night!!  Hopefully this Sat. we can do some night planning on the Melges!!!!!  That would be fun.  Lights on the sail numbers is a good idea.  At least now we have alot of light coming from Fertitaville that we didnt have in the early 90's.

The "no luffing" rule has been in place as long as I can remember for the rum races.  I believe it was originally there because in the early to mid 90's the races were run alternately between Friday and Sat. nights.  On Psyched (rating 78) our Friday night start time was about 7:25 and on Sat. an hour earlier.  The original intent of the rule from my belief was for night sailing because most of the races were conducted at night.

The no luffing rule is hard to enforce and police.  It is also hard as a slower boat to avoid luffing and just let someone roll you.  That goes completey against any racers mindset of sailboat racing!!!  I personally think the RRS cover everything and if everyone follows the rules then even the boats with novice or beginner sailors on board will be fine.
