Leigh Ann double check the series standings for the spin class. Looks like another boat was credited for mojo's second place last night.

Last time I spoke to Jay Lutz he said Gambler was coming out for TRW.  What has happened to the J-109's, 105's, 100 raters, etc....???  PHRF A should be a lot of fun.

Anyone hear what the fleet is going to do about coming home with the tropical storm expected in the gulf early next week??

Why is there a phrf sym and a phrf asymmetric class??  Why not combine them???  That's crazy. Key west doesn't do it they didn't do it at mexorc. We are scratching to get boats out and now some boats can't race because a class doesn't form????  I'm confused!!!!

I thought the J120 was 5th in PHRF spin??

General Discussion / Re: Racing participation
May 07, 2010, 10:01:47 AM
Just to clarify.  I am not blaming Wed. nights for the lack of participation on the Bay.  I think the Wed. nights are great and Buddy and Scott do an excellent job of running them.  My point was that many boats and competitors sail on Wed. night to get there sailing fix and forgo the weekend regattas.  I had a long discussion with Buddy last night on this topic and I think he is exactly right on his point and what he is trying to do.

General Discussion / Re: Racing participation

This has been a big topic on Galveston Bay for the past couple of years.  I think we miss a lot of the small boat participation on the bay because of Wed. night races.  The smaller boats get there serious racing in on Wed. nights every week of the summer.  I understand that a lot of the crew from Wed nights race on the weekend but there is still quite a few that only race on Wed.

When the Wed. night races used to be a reach fest and we started at the Turtle Club the turnout on the bay was higher by the small boats.  Thats also when Wed. nights was a spectator sport and the Turtle Club would heel at about 10 degrees with all the people watching the races!!!!

General Discussion / Re: Very sad news
May 01, 2010, 08:57:57 PM
This was very sad.  There wasnt a dry eye in the classic last night when Brad announced this.  Kinky was also a sailor on Galveston Bay for many years.  His mother Pokie was one of the founding members of GBCA and was at the commodores ball several years ago.

We will miss you Kinky.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: HYC Offshore

I was considering taking out the Melges 32 and was going to make decision today.  Guess HYC made that decision for me!!!!  Not sure why the entry deadline was a week before the event, especially considering we are always late signing up around here.

The triangle courses went away because the reaching legs are basically "no passing zones".  I am not sure that it is easier to handle a larger boat on a triangle.  If the triangle is set properly then you must execute a reach to reach jibe with the spin pole up.  That is probably the hardest manuever to do with a large symetric boat.  Especially considering on a lot of older "IOR" type boats you can square the pole back and go almost dead downwind and many cases never have to gybe.

My two cents anyways!!

If we are going to continue to use ORC in our area I think it would be good to have an ORC only regatta on the bay.  All boats race under ORC, no PHRF.  They did this in the early 90's with IMS on the bay.  The participation was very limited but at least you can test the system and sure after the race everyone will compare it to PHRF and see how it compares.

As for Harvest Moon my vote would be to have either ORC or PHRF but not both.  We dont have enough boats to have two "racing" fleets.  ORC seems to pretty decent when the options are left open for wind direction/strength and type of course.  PHRF ratings for HM are hit or miss depending on conditions and wind angle.

Sorry last post was a little off, I was writing from my I phone at the tent.  It was Sundays race that is in question.  They did a constructed course using ORR scoring.  Somehow they got some numbers transposed and the results were wrong.  A boat filed for redress yesterday and the scoring was redone and results posted this evening after racing.  We feel we were materially prejudiced by the results because we sailed today knowing that all we had to do was get 2nd and the regatta was over and that is what we did. Every class had to be rescored with about 75% of the boats changing positions within there class!!!!  Not sure how they can not throw out the race.  I had a discussion with the RC tonight and he said it was talked about throwing out the race but they didnt want to do that because then there would be no throw out for the regatta!!!  To me that is not a reason to not toss a race due to RC error!!  If the race is tossed we have a 1.5 pt lead and we need to finish 2nd or better to win, thats if Velocee wins but I imagine they will be either first or second, we are doing a Gold cup course tomorrow.  W/L, triangle, W/L  The third place boat is an old IOR 43' that wont be able to reach with us or the J-133.  This has been an incredible event!!  Awesome place to sail.  We almost hit a whale the other day and today saw some whales in the distance blowing water.

Not so fast. We thought we had it won and they changed the results from Mondays race this evening. US sailing imputed wrong numbers on monday. Just discovered this morning and we found out about it this evening. We have 1/2 pt lead and throw out a two. Veloce throws out a four. One race left  we are filing redress right now. Hearing at 10 am tomorrow

We had a 1, 2 today and increased our lead by 1/2 pt.  two boats tied in the first race.  We have distance race tomorrow and a Gold Cup triangle to finish out the regatta on Sat.  We will get one throw out if 8 races are completed.  We have a 4.5 pt lead.
