I'm still looking for a few more volunteers after this weekends seminar:
- boats to take seminar participant crew along with you to teach racing
- knowledgable sailors that can go with seminar participant skippers on their boat to teach racing and help them around the course

Let me know if you can help.

Thanks

Thank god we wound up with one.  Doing the 110 with 3 might have been just a bit much. Bill was absolutely spectacular.  We let him run the main ( I of course bitched at him the entire time to make sure he got the proper treatment), and he did a super job, we let him DRIVE! under the big kite and as Kevin said did a better job the the OLD PHART.

Methinks the "newbies" are a bit better then we give them credit for.

This is a great program.  We definitely need to keep it going.  More of us old salts need to allow our boats to be part of the parade.

Oops.  I forgot to say that  Chris did a fabulous job presenting the Basic Sailing Concepts, Walter did a wonderful job of chiming in at the proper time, and I think everyone enjoyed all of it.  I had a blast!

Scott,
If you would like to discuss using Bondi Tram as a boat for the more advanced, "newbies", give me a call.  Might be an interesting experinece for those that want to do some learning on a bit more one-off type boat.  And I would like to see the boat sailing.

Alot of new faces in the clubhouse yesterday. A full house with 40+ people. Chris did a great job. It's not easy to coordinate all those folks with boats.
The Intro course should be bringing in some new boats!

btw our guest crew, JJ did a great job.

As for the racing, RR#1 was a fine evening. I would say another 60 boats or so. Good breeze and wonderful moon.

Next week is RR#2, clockwise!

KATANA was 07:33:40. When will the final results be posted. It appeared that some boats were not flying there class flag, it makes it hard to tell who you are racing against, or not and even harder if you are doing the scoring. SI are - ?Yachts racing in the Rum Series shall clearly display their class flag(s) from the backstay or other prominent visible position on the stern of the yacht throughout the race?. I was fouled by one boat that I gave way to, to avoid hitting them, and found out later that he was in my class, and scored, which took me out of the numbers, and was not even registered.

I believe Leading Edge was scored.   I don't think that boat was in the cruising class.  It is not registered in the Club Handicap Fleet and has participated in the PHRF Spin Class in the past. I intend to bring a copy of the Club Handicap Registrants to use as a reference after the races to hopefully alleviate the confusion. Can't hurt..right?

I checked with Leading Edge, Tom says it was a red flag (I thought brown as we finished right behind him) for Non-spin or shorthand as he had only a crew of 2, but didn't know the right flag combo for shorthand.

Shaken not Stirred was reported as taking 2nd; but self-reported themselves near the back of the fleet with a time out of the podium.

Top 5 finishing scores will be adjusted accordingly.

I think Bleeding Edge ran non-spin. I think they started ahead of me and the only way that would happen is if they were using their non-spin handicap.  I do not recall seeing them with their kite up, but I vaguely recall passing them with mine up so if they were running spin they would have hoisted.  Tom is a super sailor and I cannot believe he would do spin without raising his kite.

If they don't have a flag, don't score them.  There are other boats out there just crusing about and coming in at the same time we are.

Fabulous.  Nice to see some new names (except for the Island and Bullet) taking top honors.  Love those names.

Was nice to see so many boats on the water.  My guess is 60+.

I got some movies that I will need to edit.  Hopefully the wide angle is big enough to see something besides my big A......

Will post if there is anything good.

Shaken Not Stirred officially reporting in...our finish time was 19:50:35.   And to think I washed the bird poop off my stern before we left the dock...we did have a great time listening to the Buffett concert live on Margaritaville though.  Drinks were cheaper, colder, better, no lines for the bathroom, it was clean...not a bad evening at all.

And thanks to Jim Powers, Corrie and Kevin for gathering, setting up, cooking and cleaning up all the food and libations.

We drove around the lake today, wish I had a boat here.We rented a very nice house on the water just past Zephyr Cove, my wife has named it the super pad! If any one needs a recommed of a place to stay, I would highly recommend this place, but it,s pretty pricey! See you all on RR #4, my thanks to my crew for keeping me in the numbers, great job. Far be it for me to complain about the results for the #3 race spin class, but it seems that Pedro and his mini-rocket came in second, everybody else - including Hamburg - moves down one. Or did he sail shorthanded?

Also, for the overall standings: The results for Mojo in the second race were for the 24' edition, the results for the 3rd race were for the 32' edition. Should be scored as two separate boats.

Pedro claimed RAF when he realized he had gone into the ship channel not realizing that it is an obstruction.

Thanks for the clarification of the two Mojo's.  I will adjust accordingly.

It's disqualifying yourself when you realize that there was something improper in the way you sailed that race; but, you cannot go back and undo it now.  It's the Corinthian thing to do.

Hi gang!  I understand there was a little bit of confusion over Blind Ambition as some racers were confused by our start time, and no one scored us at the finish. To clear things up, although we are a J24, we race non-spin (we do have a black flag clearly displayed off of our transom). Also, we are only sailing with a class jib (what they will be using in the Blind Worlds that we are training for) so our non-spin rating is a little tweaked so even if another J24 is racing non-spin, we are probably still starting a little ahead of them. Hope this clears things up. Thanks!  8)  Karen

Next race is Aug. 18th.

A couple of reminders from the SI's, because there is no Race Committee on the course:

1)
The races are governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012, with the following exceptions: NO LUFFING IS ALLOWED.  Luffing shall be defined as changing course to windward after another boat has approached within two boat lengths from any direction. A boat passing to windward or leeward must maintain at least two boat lengths to either side until no overlap exists.

2)
IX. Finishing
The first yacht in each class to cross the finish line will be the winner of the class and be required to record the next 4 places in her class by legibly recording the boat name and or sail numbers. The finishing information then must be presented to the race chairman at the social event following the race. Remember, to score a first place, a yacht must both cross the finish line first and record the next four finishers.
GBCA Club Handicap: The first yacht in the GBCA Club Handicap class to cross the finish line will be the winner of the class and be required to record the next 4 places by recording the boat name and or sail numbers. The winning yacht shall also record the finish time for the next 4 places. Each yacht finishing shall record their finish time and report it to Kevin Box by private message/posting on the discussion forum.
The race ends at 21:00. Any boat that has not finished by this time will not be scored.

Tramp was out yesterday with Kelly Dees, my lovely wife Becky and myself. Becky and I took pictures of another fine Rum Race on the bay. I did not manage the 4 gig card very well and ran out of space at the end of the race (Champagne Impaired). The pictures can be found on John's Flicker account; http://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/sets/72157630918013846/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/sets/72157630918013846/) . John was a little under the weather. Just a reminder that there are two Rum Races left and it would be great practice for the women to take the helm and get ready for GBCA's Women Regatta on September 15th. Let the women yell for a change! :-*

Great food, and a lot fun people. Great photos, just wish I had a photo of Wondering Star and I at the finish, it would look great on my man cave wall.  Almost caught them, great looking kite WS. Sailing does not get much better than this, many thanks to all that make it happen! ?KATANA?

This is the part pf the No Luffing Rule that that's always missed.

A boat passing to windward or leeward must maintain at least two boat lengths to either side until no overlap exists

Last Rum Race of the season is tomorrow, 9/8!
A nice warmup for the GBCA Womens Regatta

If you're in the running to win, place or show in the RR series in your class, now is a good time to be a GBCA member (of course, we know you are already  ;D) to get that hard earned series trophy!

Terry,

New ratings this afternoon.  I have no idea about food for the party.  I can tell you what kind they have in the hospital and I'd rather have a good hot dog :o

It's no big deal, Kevin but just for our education; Leopard was finished in 5th in the Cruising Class and later corrected to 6th when it was learned that Zippity Do Da had been missed for some reason. Yet our start time has changed. Not much, but just wondering.
Thanks for keeping up with all this. And thanks to everyone involved for all the good work.

Jim,

I have 13 boats reporting times.  The median boat (#7) did not change, but the 6th place (Leopard) changed by one second.  The farther you are from the median boat, the greater your potential for change.

Oh, I see now. Thot' it was just the top 5 that changed. But median score makes sense.
Thanks

How hard was it blowing on that last leg?

Just as we finished we saw a few gust around 20, but I don't think it got much higher then that.
I was pretty tired by then and was not paying a lot of attention to the instruments.

We had a couple bursts of 8.3 knots over ground and at those angles it takes something on the order of 20
or a little more in true wind to get us going that fast.

The leg from E to J was really fun.  Not sure where those wave packets came from but
we rode a lot of them to 10-12 knots and a couple pushed us above 13 over ground.

Our gauges were showing 20-22 knts pretty regular, with an occasional gust to 24.  I saw the true wind-o-meter register one gust of 26knts.

I know it was high but I didn't think it was that high.  My wind speed indicator is kinda small
guess I missed those speeds somewhere along the way.

We were seeing 20 true sustained most of the leg last leg, occasional drops to 18. Boat speed about 7.5. Not Soverel 27 weather but the old girl held together and the big rudder kept us upright. Second leg had some crossing tanker waves. Couldn't quite get the timing right to be surfin' USA!  Crew got wet, but still made time for mojitos on leg two. Fun night! Great series!!

Somewhere in the middle of hitting a few high-9kts on the second leg, after the crew went to much effort to swap up from blade to genoa, I really didn't corellate that with serious windspeed whoopee on the third leg. Maybe just an overdose of enthusiam or something like that.

Great Rum Racing again, wish I could have made it out for more of them.
