If you sail on Galveston Bay, this may be of interest.
Public comments needed

From HYC:

"As some of you may already be aware, the Port of Houston Authority has applied for a permit from the Corps of Engineers to widen and deepen the Bayport Channel. While the dredging project itself should have little impact on the Club, one potential plan for disposal of the resulting dredge material is of major concern to the Club. The Port is proposing in its permit application one option to dispose of all of the dredge material in a new, very large dredge island west of the Houston ship channel and north of HYC. The island would initially be below water level, with the ability to raise it higher in future years. The Port is also including an option in its permit application to dispose of the dredge material in existing disposal cells on the east side of Atkinson's Island.

The immediate past and current HYC Flag have been meeting with the Port for nearly a year to express our opposition to any dredge material disposal west of the ship channel in the Upper Galveston Bay area. We believe that the island would represent a significant hazard to navigation in an area of the Bay heavily used by recreational boaters, could damage a world-class sailboat racing venue, and would take away a public asset from all boaters in the Galveston Bay area. There would be other safety, environmental, and community impacts as well that HYC and other affected parties are concerned about.

The HYC Flag just found out two days ago that the Public Notice has been published. Public comments are due on June 4, although the Club and other interested parties are requesting an extension from the Corps and TCEQ for the comment period. The Public Notice can be found at http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/reg/notice/PN2011-01183.pdf. We encourage all members to submit comments to the Corps and TCEQ. We will send out sample letters shortly if you need some help with the letters.

Be assured that the HYC Flag and Board of Trustees are vigorously opposing the taking of our waters. In addition to continued meetings with the Port, the Flag is meeting with area elected officials, talking to other affected constituencies, and developing a legal and technical strategy for protecting our front yard. But we need your help now as well. In addition to writing letters to the Corps and TCEQ, please contact your elected representatives and ask for their help in preserving the Bay for future generations.

We'll keep you posted as this issue continues to develop."

Old Sailors' Reunion (if you raced in the 80's).  We're hoping to see all of you there, this Thursday, the 29th from 2 to 6pm at Houston Yacht Club.
If you have not already done so, please either call or e-mail with your reservations.  It's going to be a grand time!  One that is not to be missed.
Call or e-mail Dixie dixlinc@att.net or 281-482-5144.

I think several past GBCA members will be there, along with J.Howard. It was suggested to bring you old memorbelia, pictures...in particular...so they can be scanned in. -ChrisK

It looks like HYC is opening up their Spring Series to non members.... I'm not sure if it's $20 each race or for the entire series...also you need to register by e-mail the Wednesday before the event at billvanrav@earthlink.net

NOR here
http://www.houstonyachtclub.com/documents/NOR_Spring_Series.pdf

From Bill van Ravenswaay the 2012 HYC Fleet Captain:
"HYC SPRING SERIES: Our seasonal (Spring, Summer, Fall) racing series are single Saturdays of racing - three per series for a total of nice racing days per year.  These events are traditionally for HYC Members only (at no charge - one of the benefits of membership at our club). We have decided to open the 2012 Spring Series to non-members as an experiment.  The dates are March 24, April 28 and June 09. Non-members would pay a $20 registration fee the day of the event.  They also must register in advance of the date by e-mail.  Just send me an e-mail no later than Midnight the Wednesday before the race announcing your intention to compete (we need this data to properly prepare the race committee).  Please remember, for one-design racing we need three boats minimum to create a class.  I will be posting a formal Notice of Race on our Web site by Wednesday evening."

General Discussion / Past GBCA Commodore research
February 03, 2012, 06:25:39 PM
Putting together a list of past GBCA Commodores, continuing a project Jody started 5 years ago for the 60th anniversary.
I have contacts/status for most, but not all.

Here's who I'm looking for to complete the list along with the year they were active.
If you know where these guys are, drop me a line:

Ron Shepard, 1990
Tom McClughan, 1989 and 1986
Clarence "Buck" Gay, 1984 found
Hank Arnold, 1983 found
Ken Davis, 1982 found
Lloyd Ludlam, 1980 found
David Whitaker, 1973 found
Elbridge Gerry, 1968 found
George C. Francisco III, 1961
Don Genitempo, 1959 found
James C. Ivins, 1958 found

In case you're wondering. GBCA has had 58 Commodores in 65 years of existence. Some were even crazy enough to do it twice. Founder R.G. "Bud" Smith was Commodore the first 7 years.

For you history buffs, old Bud was an interesting guy even before settling down in Texas.
He is the Honorary Commodore of the "Canvas Hangers" WWII USCG Reserve...
Check out the story and the boats at
http://www.eastendseaport.org/CanvasHangers.html

He also published a book dating back to the 1930's. "Sailing Made Easy: Told in Pictures"
Copies are around on Amazon.com

Added a new page called "Stories Behind The Silver" to the GBCA website that you history buffs might be interested in:
http://gbca.memberlodge.org/StoriesBehindTheSilver

The page is mostly a compilation of the old annual handbooks from 1958 to 1994 and TORC handbooks dating back to 1963.

I believe the original "Stories Behind The Silver" was written and researched by longtime GBCA historian Pokie Stamper.
Many of you might remember Pokie as one of the guest speakers at the 60th Anniversary GBCA Commodores Ball in 2007.
I added some of my own research, detective work and trophy pictures in an effort to digitally document some of GBCA's unique history

I hope to eventually add history placards to all of the GBCA trophies in the trophy case, as well as giving all the trophies the "white glove" polish they deserve

Of course, the research and photos are not complete in many areas (Roger Stone, Marion Hayes, listing the winners, etc) but it's a start to documenting GBCA's long and colorful 64 year history.

The project was quite alot of fun to work on and finally able to tie together some of the old race stories we've heard so much about over the years.

If you have anything to add, please let me know!

We always have a few local boats make the trip, this year is the 25th anniversary of Key West Race Week

It sounds like the local 1d35 fleet will be well represented
with Revolution and Tres Hombres making the trip

Rumor has it six 1d35 from around the country will be going, with half of those being converted "turboed" asymetrical

Who else locally is going? I'm assuming a few J80's...

More info:

The J boats will have their own specific classes, it will be interesting to see how Johnston breaks them down. TP52s and Farr 40 will be back. Those are awesome boats to see in action!

Once you're done with all that turkey, and catching up with Uncle Joe, it's time to plan 2012!

http://gbca.memberlodge.org/2012GBCARaceCalendar

No huge changes this year, other than the addition of a Galveston to Biloxi race instead of Veracruz.
