Title: Because someone asked...
Post by: Big John on November 27, 2009, 11:53:47 AM
Last Spring, in a different life, also boring, I was keeping track of the Annual hi-point scores for sailors in GBCA events.  Someone asked me for an update so here it is.  First Ground rules:
1. Score is the percent of boats you beat in the race or regatta.
2. For series, it is the percent of boats who scored less than you, except that since there are ties, each get the same points. (They beat the same percent of the boats)
3. Last place always gets zero points, even in series, where they actually did beat some one.
4. Each class is scored separately.
5. Includes short handed events with the same rank as full regattas.
6. GBCA results only

To refresh the sceptics memories.  The fifth place boat in a ten boat race gets 50 points.  The third place boat in a four boat race gets 25 points.  The winner in a three boat race gets 67 points. The winner in a 20 boat race gets 95 points.

Includes Icicle, Frostbite, Conundrum, TGIF, RTB, TRW, Single handed, Mixed Doubles, Bank

The winners are...
1   387   Stinger
2   368   Silver Bullet
3   367   Big D
4   363   French Connection
5   347   Sabani
6   325   Dolcetto
7   298   Solaris
8   293   Hot Ticket
9   286   Be Easy
10   218   Tenacity
11   216   Kicks
12   209   Tropical Agression
13   205   Sea Trial
14   199   Bad Girl
15   197   Gambler
16   143   Out Of Site
17   143   Otra Vez
18   141   Further
19   136   Shaken Not Stirred
20   131   footloose

Efficiency award (highest average position for 3 or more starts) goes to Sabani with 4 starts averaging 87.

It pays to show up at every race.

John,
I actually think it is interesting.
Thanks for taking the time to put it together.
For grins, can you continue in 2010?

While it is only a few computer cycles and a little cutting and pasting into an Excel spreadsheet, it would be much more worthwhile to do if the club could find a sponsor and make it an official competition.  And Bee is exactly right, victory in this race comes to those who just keep showing up (and oh btw sailing pretty darn good as well.) Millie won the competition in the LA basin two years in a row by doing just that.  The dynamics are a bit different here, but it does have the potential to give people a reason to both show up themselves and to encourage others to come out and play.

Get a sponsor.
Write a deed of gift.
Get a trophy.
Make the presentation of the trophy a big deal at a big deal regatta.
Maybe.... adjust the basis to give points for each race in the TGIF and Rum series.  Include specific races by other clubs.

Make it worthwhile.

I absolutely agree that this would be a good thing to help motivate people to come out and play a lot more.  We do it just because I am always afraid I may not be able to do it much longer, but a trophy might be more help.

Make the trophy presentation at the Commode Doors' Ball.  Trophy shouldn't cost all that much anyway.  Couple hundred bucks.

thanks for the number crunching John... we know you have nothing better to do :-)  I think there should be a sort of presentation at the Commodore's Ball... Might help get boats out more often...

I think a perpetual trophy already exists.  See original "Season Champion Trophy..." discussion (in old forum) by Scott that started this.

Indeed the "club champion" trophy does exist.  It is alive and kicking (although needs some cleaning up) in the GBCA trophy case.  No reason to buy a new one!
