They are moving up!!!!
This is an incredibly beautiful place to sail when the sun is out.
Its one of the toughest places from a competitive point of view.
Dennis Conner was third and was never even close to Chris Perkins
on Masquerade. On the podium his first comment when something
like "Its hard being voted the best sailor in the US and then having to
eat humble pie." In every race, Masquerade blew off the line like it
had afterburners. Felt like racing against Zartler in a 25 boat fleet.
For whatever reason we never managed to get J-OK going. When I
tack Stinger I rarely loose more then .6 kt. When I tacked J-OK i
almost always lost a knot. Boat felt heavy in the middle. One tack
like that and your out. The guys in the slip next to us said I should
have loosened up the wheel to make it spin faster and after thinking
about it they were probably right. But, by that time it wasn't worth
the effort. Coming out of each tack we just could not get the acceleration
we should have gotten. One of the crew (all female save one) on another
boat told me it took them several years to figure out how to do that.
I think my crew did as well as could be expected on a borrowed boat but
all of think we could have done better. Maybe next year.
Great parties both at SDYC and at Humphreys Half Moon Inn. If you
get a chance to go out there for some racing do so and stay at the Half
Moon. Its right around the corner from SDYC. They have wonderful
"events" there with great rock bands and such. The place is beautiful.
One thing I can say for sure is that one morning I used the facilities
in the slot next to the greatest sailor in the world. How many of you
can say that!

I can!
