Title: any thoughts on getting a pair of Lewmar winches re-chromed?
Post by: JayZ on July 07, 2009, 05:39:32 PM
I'm looking for a company to replate a pair of Lewmar 54St winches.  The drums are kind of getting worn looking.  Also, what can be done to keep the grippy part of the drum from getting to slick after plating?

Anyone have an idea on this?

Kevin Hayes - you out there?

You can have the drums re-knarled (not sure if that is a word or not)!!  Jim Davis did this on the J-35 a few years back.  May go thru jib sheets quicker than you are used to, but thats what keeps the local economy going!!!  There is also companies that will re-chrome them and they will look like new.  There used to be an ad in the old Mariners Log, you might look in the back of Telltales in the classified section and see if there ad is there.

There are outfits who do this work and have experience with yacht winches.
Do searches for chrome plating and look in sailing magazines for offers of
this service.

You should anticipate disassembly/reassembly yourself to save costs.

Good Luck
