General Discussion / 146 Bridge Weather Station
July 13, 2010, 11:15:13 PM
I didn't want to get involved with that other discussion since this is a bit different.

A friend of mine was the HC OEM employee who actually installed that thing.  It's owned by TXDOT now and it's on their list of 'don't bother to fix' (not a real list but unofficially low priority).  I had a chat with him tonight and he said if I thought there were enough of us interested in sending email requests to TXDOT to request a 'sprucing up', he would look up the actual folks email addys who make those decisions.

Not saying it would actually happen, but he did say that if they knew a bunch of people wanted it running, then it filters up the list (plus he said unofficially, they can tell their bosses they are helping serve community requests or something like that).

Any interest?

General Discussion / Helf for a local sailor
July 10, 2010, 10:01:38 AM
Ok, I've never posted one of these before but here goes.

There's a local sailor who's raced in a few Harvest Moons and goes to the Turtle Club every Wed to watch us enjoy ourselves who could use some help.  His name is Greg Ince, he's in MD Anderson Hospital and battling the big C.  He's already fought leukemia once and thought he had it beat.  Now he's been back in the hospitial for several weeks fighting it again.  He needs to undergo a bone marrow transplant (again).  The good news is they have found him a donor that is a perfect match.  The bad news is it takes a pretty severe treatment process to get him ready and then aftercare.  He's getting daily blood transfusions to keep his white cell count up and running.

Greg is a real nice guy.  He lives on his boat on the south side of the lake and goes sailing with anybody who asks for a deckhand.  He's helped deliver boats for new owners and only asked for help with the airfare.  We've had dinner/drinks with him a few times and he's was always trying to make sure everyone had a good time.  He had talked about getting into racing but wasn't sure since in his opinion he didn't know squat and didn't want to pull anybody down.  I know that doesn't matter to most of us and we hooked him up with a couple of HMR rides and took him to a couple of rum races/parties and he thought we were a good group (we had him fooled apparantly  :D).

Anyway, if any of you donate blood (I can't  :( ), doing so in Greg's name would be a big help.  I would have posted this earlier, but I just found out late last nite he was in this condition.

I don't know if any of ya'll know him, but there are several of us on another board that are putting the word out to lend him a hand.

Thanks ya'll, see you tonight.

You know,  the n/s fleet this weekend could simply be a case of overload and people just needing a short break.  We had the Elissa two weeks ago, which had a good n/s fleet, Wed nights started last week (9 n/s boats and many of the same people) and heald bank is next week, which also has a good n/s fleet registered.   Sabani was also still getting new furler parts installed and wasn't quite ready (broke in Elissa Regatta)

I also think the earlier you sign up the more likely a few other 'maybes' are to register.  I know registering early isn't in our genes, but it might get another boat or two out if on mon/tue they login and see a fleet has already made.

It is a great fleet with good racing even if you don't want the extra hassles of going spinnaker.

Anyway that's my .02 worth, gotta go mow yard so I can race tomorrow

Those of us that were on Island Time want to thank all of our competition and the R/C for a fun, wet, cold race.

At least we never ran out of beer, even after that long delay to wait on the weather forecasters to catch up with the actual weather.

I don't know if any of the big boats pushed it out of the way this weekend, but last Wed afternoon, there was a 2x6 stuck in the ground between SSY and Portofino.  It was almost directly across from Portofino's pool.

Hopefully the stargazer ran it over this weekend and it won't be an issue this Wed.

I know what you guys are talking about.. we had to pause our start for 2 boats to finish... I think it would have been less confusing to finish at the top mark, where we all finished...

but your right, technically the cruisers should have rounded the "pin" and finished down wind.. that would have thrown them off....

Here's a copy/paste of the definition of Finish from the RRS:

Finish A boat finishes when any part of her hull, or crew or equipment in
normal position, crosses the finishing line in the direction of the course from
the last mark, either for the first time or after taking a penalty under rule 44.2
or, after correcting an error made at the finishing line, under rule 28.1.

The last mark was the High Range marker just East of HYC and the Finish line was SW(ish) from there (upwind), so it seems to me that was the correct direction.

Unless I'm missing something (which is always possible)

This is  a copy paste from BMWOracleRacing site

America's Cup Victory Tour.
Following Sunday?s race victory, which resulted in a 2-0 sweep of the 33rd America?s Cup Match, the BMW ORACLE Racing team is preparing to bring the Cup home to the United States.
The America?s Cup Victory Tour presented by ORACLE and BMW EfficientDynamics will begin tomorrow afternoon February 19, when the trophy touches down in San Francisco following a flight in a first-class seat to SFO from Valencia via Frankfurt. After being welcomed at the airport, the trophy and team will proceed to the Golden Gate Yacht Club ? the team?s patron and the Cup?s new home ? for a reception with club members and special guests.

Saturday morning, a public viewing is planned at the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda. At 11:30 am Mayor Gavin Newsom will formally welcome the Cup and team, including team owner Larry Ellison, back to the United States in a City Hall ceremony open to the public. A press conference will follow.

On Sunday afternoon, the America?s Cup will head south to San Diego, where the team operated a training base for 16 months in 2008 and 2009. At 4:00 pm the America?s Cup will be on public display at the USS Midway museum on the city?s waterfront.

Following a 5:00 pm ceremony with Mayor Jerry Sanders, the trophy and team will head to the San Diego Yacht Club on the replica of the yacht America, for which the trophy is named. A flotilla of San Diego boats will parade along with America for a sunset sail across San Diego Bay to former Cup holder San Diego Yacht Club.

The homecoming tour may be extended to the East Coast of the United States the following week ? details to come.

Tim, I agree that changing the search fields to input with a like and using the wildcards (use them on both sides of the value) could produce more results, but if you're looking for a Beneteau 33.7 for instance and you're like me, you probably can't spell Beneteau right and the two 33.7s are rated differently with different model names (Which probably isn't accurate from the manufactures point of view, but I understand from a rating standpoint if the boats are different), and if you didn't know it you could miss the one you want.  However with the 'contains' search you could enter 33.7 and get the ones you are looking for.

Anyway just a usability idea.

Bee, it appears (based on looking at the SQL code they are running on the back end query) that names are entered into one field called Mail_Name, and they didn't break out first name and last name into different fields in the database.  Therefore it's not going to be easy to sort on last name vs first name.  It could be done if you make the assumption that only two name with only one space are being used (to seperate first and last name).  I would prefer to see a group of radio buttons on the search page that allows you to change the sort critera before you press 'search'.  That way you could sort on rating, boat name, owner name, Loa, etc....  Another group of buttons could be added to allow you to sort ascending or decending.

Still a lot better than the old site.

Wow, I think the new search functionality is a great idea and seems to be working well.  I'm not trying to fault anyone here as I've built a few B2C eCommerce sites and I know these can be a B*$(# to build.  So as long as the developer understands I'm just trying to offer constructive ideas based on my experience.

First, what about changing the preloaded drop down boxes to simple input fields.  This would allow for faster page loading and more importantly people wouldn't have to scroll down through all of the older boats looking for the one they wanted.

Second, how about changing the SQL operator for all of the criteria to Like statements and automatically append the '%' to both sides of each imput value so that the search becomes a 'contains' search.  For users that allows them to put in a J- and get all the J Boats or a C&C and get all the C&C boats.

Just my $.02.  Even without the changes, it's still a much improved search from the old system and I applaud the effort.  Plus I like that the NSF is now being shown on the results page.  Makes it easier to see what various boats would be if they decided to race N/S.

Sorry to hear about that Duane, I was worried about that when we stopped by to say hi.  Amy and I wish you a speedy recovery.
