I would like to add that this works we picked up George and he is excited to be racing. He did not know enough to be scared when we saw 38+ knots.

we are using E and H and should be clear for this series? Later on in the year the san leon yellow mark could be an issue. Didn't we have a map with the known obstacles on it?

Crew Finder / Icicle Series 2023
December 23, 2022, 06:03:00 PM
We are looking for new crew.  The average age on the boat is old.  We pride ourselves on teaching and not yelling.  We are in need of some grinders to help the old guys with the sails.  We have a lot of fun and we win more than lose.  I am the guy next to Walter in all the pictures and my cup says that.
I can be reached at vailshawn1@gmail.com or here or 2815073411  Boat is C&C 38 and has red hull.  We have dragons and a cool race flag.  We have regular crew but are in need of reinforcements.  Something about a life outside of racing. I just don't understand that.  Racing is all that should matter.

I like the remote option let me know how that evolves.

When I got up for the race not a whole lot of wind. I checked the radar weather 10-15 nothing exciting yet.  On the way to the start we kept looking at the radar and clouds We put a reef in....just in case it got wild and it did.  It was all i could do to keep from rounding up on the second leg.  We saw 28 in a puff but i bet it was higher.  I hope everybody made it around the course with out breaking anything.  Typical Icicle weather...Hang on!!!

Almost

Dont forget the sprit adds up to 10 feet on the J dimension accorting to a sailmaker it can add 40 % more sail so I vote no sprit.

Good discusion
great points
I am not really sure any rating system PHRF or ORC will cover the differences in the hull design.  the evolution from heavy displacement to foiling cats spans 30 years or more. I do not want foils in my class either. ;)

I agree with the sail area and displacement grouping as getting closer to the truth.  Now the sprit adds more J to the sail area so I think we need to stay away from that grouping. Like boats against like boats. Heavy against heavy and surfers against surfers.  Its not necessarily cheap to get new sails but with some shopping you might find some used ones to try out for a bow a kite class.

And they are a trick to fly verses a sym kite so get some practice time in.  We are still learning.

I am digging this bow A kite class but we need some more boats.  I know starting a class just before the icycle does not give much time to come up with a sail if you dont have one.  We had ours from last year and we used it.  So if you are not doing well in another class come on over for the last race.

Going all around the course crossing the finish line with a minute between boats is exciting

I forgot to label the weight it was early and no I was not drinking I am on diaper duty.  There is a ton of difference between the two boats actually 2 tons or 4000 lbs.  I had a car that weighed that much now we could almost say two mini coopers.  No wonder they go fast.  Strap a car or two on the deck and then watch them go.
Cheers

My hope is the Spinnaker A-Kite Bow Class does the trick.  If for some reason we cannot get enought boats for a class I do not want to get lumped back into a J boat class.  I am traveling 1500 miles to make the race on Saturday the rest of you can get your buts off the couch and race.

Race Q has been tracking boats now for at least a year.  It should be obvious which boats can take off and walk away from the rest.  I have seen J boats come flying into a mark at amazing speed. As an older design and a heaver boat 10,900 vs 14,700 (J109 vs C&C38) I can just watch them go by.

I have concentrated my time on going as fast as I can.  I personally have not reviewed each race to see how the different design boats react to all the conditions.  The nerd inside me wants to do that.  But then there is beer to drink and a party.  Perhaps when I retire i will have time to crunch the numbers.

I do know that if I cannot win a race no matter how well the boat does then the fun goes out of it.  If we want boats to go out and race they need a chance to win.  Any given day any boat  should be able to win a race if they dont mess up.  I don't know how to make that happen.  I dont know how to make everything fair for everyone.  I just want to go fast and win.
Happy new Year
Hope to see you out there
Hope you are on my stern and stay there. ;)

That puts us back in with the J boats and we had that discussion last year.  Displacement hull vs planing hull how is that fair?  We never finish anywhere close to them which tells me something about the numbers.

I was more confused about the boat with a green light on the stern and no running lights on the bow.  Didnt know if he was coming at me or going away.....

I hope the wind wont die again on the last leg.  It made a long night and the awards after midnight were way past my bedtime.   There seemed to be less people at the party.

my two cents
