I know a lot of you aren't kiteboarders but, registration is up and the NOR is posted for this year's GBCA RIB Regatta!

The date is March 22, 2014 and if you missed it last year, let me tell you - you won't want to make the same mistake twice.  It is a lot of fun to watch and even more fun to volunteer!!!

We will need dinghy's or jet ski's for the day if any GBCA members have them to donate.  If there is water in the Bay (which there wasn't last year), we could even use some motor boats - as long as they can be ramp launched off of the dyke.

Looking forward to seeing all of you out there!

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Jim Wells
December 27, 2013, 02:54:22 PM
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Vice Commodore, Mr. Jim Wells.

Jim passed away peacefully at home today. His battle with ALS was physically demanding and his reward in heaven is near. The Wells family appreciates all of your love and support.

The visitation will be held Sunday December 29 from 6-9 pm at Crowder Funeral Home in Webster (111 E. Medical Center Blvd.), with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. The Requiem Mass will be said on Monday December 30 at 11:30 am, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Dickinson, TX (4100 Texas 3). Jim will be laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery at I-45 S. @ Hughes Rd., Exit 19, Dickinson, TX.

For those of you who didn't know Jim, he began sailing on Clear Lake with the Clear Lake Sailing Club in his first Daysailer.  A few years later he competed in the CLRA Wed. Night Races with a few other CLSC sailors.  Last year, he and Bob Hunkins bought their S2 10.3, Leopard and raced it in GBCA events last season.  He and his wife, Janelle call League City their home and they have four grown children.

For me, Jim was my endless supporter of sustainability and promoting clean regattas.  He was a smile and a positive spirit and the one that you 100% counted on.  Rest In Peace sir.  You influenced so many lives while living your best one.

I'm reposting this from the General Discussion thread but I think everyone needs to see it and watch for this boat to report them.

From USCG Galveston:

Last evening (5/26/2013), the crew of 25809 responded to a boat collision off Seawolf Park, they transferred a man who had been thrown into the water when a Catamaran power driven vessel collided with a S/V. The man and woman were transported to UTMB with injuries, and the Catamaran Hull left the scene without stopping to aid the occupants of the S/V. If you are in the local area and see a white catamaran (power driven) vessel with heavy bow damage, please call             409-766-5633      . Very sad that this boater failed to follow the navigation rules of the road and worse yet, fled the scene.

General Discussion / Bill Curra
January 16, 2013, 03:50:48 PM
To those of you who knew him...

Bill Curra passed away sometime Tuesday morning.  He was living and working in Paris, France and he was found in his apartment.  He had apparently been sufferring from a terrible headache and was sent home from work.

I met Bill and Bobby when I first moved to Houston and interrupted them after I overheard them talking about sailing.  He was a genuine and giving person who really did live life to the fullest.  He will be greatly missed by his friends here, in Austin and the people he's touched around the world.

Smooth sailing Bill.  Our prayers are with his friends and family.

So, if you vote for any of these people:

Jody Henry, Walter Caldwell, Jim Wells, Chris Alk, Chris Dees, Beverly Caldwell, John Mather, Corrie Lambert, Scott Lacy, Alan Bates, Pete Meeh, Jim Powers, Kevin Bednar

It won't count.

You could vote for a very recent Board member though......keep that in mind.

To all Senior Members -- please check your email inbox for the online ballot (sent yesterday) to elect the 2013 Board of GBCA.  I realize that if some of you opened it right as your received it, the link didn't work.  I apologize for the inconvenience but everything is up and running now so please return to the email, follow the link and vote.

There are write-in selections for each candidate and for the trustee positions.  Feel free to add names but know that to be on the board, and to be elected, you must be a senior member.  We must take that into acount when nominating individuals and when awarding positions.

Also, scroll down to read about our exciting news that your GBCA membership cards are on the way!!  These cards will give you discounts at local businesses that support sailing in our area.

Thank you and please vote!
