A couple of questions regarding the TGIF SIs:

  • Shouldn't the formula for calculating start time be
      S= 11.25 x (285-R)
      Starting Time = base time+ S
    instead of
      S= 12.81x (285-R)
      Starting Time = base time+ S
    ?
  • Is the contact email really  FleetCaptian@Gmail.com?

Galveston Bay Area Racing / CLRA notices
June 21, 2018, 08:55:22 AM
I heard that the Wednesday Night races last night were cancelled via a post on facebook. Good call on canceling. But the SIs state:
"4.1 Notices to competitors shall be posted on the web site at http://www.clearlakeracing.org. In the event of cancellation, the CLRA
Hotline at 281-636-3508 should have a message with details/more information. Information in the front page of the web site and
revisions to the SI posted on the website are considered a notice to competitors whether specifically flagged under the menu called
Notices to competitors or not. "

The "hotline" still says something about Tropical Storm Cindy.  I don't think the website was updated until way later.
Do you think 4.1 should be altered to say that notices to competitors shall be posted on facebook?
In the event of cancellation, maybe an email or text to all registered competitors?

General Discussion / Betsie
February 14, 2018, 01:37:59 PM
For those that may not have heard, I'm saddened to report that Betsie Morlan lost her brave battle with cancer. She passed away at home in her sleep early Sunday morning.
Per her wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of life is planned for March 31st, details forthcoming.
Chris requests no flowers or anything, but if you want to do something in Betsie's memory, consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
Betsie was one of a kind, and will be dearly missed by many (now that's an understatement!).
Fair winds, Betsie.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / J/22 Fleet 6
March 21, 2017, 03:05:00 PM
The local J/22 fleet is growing by the minute, and we suspect we are the largest one design keelboat fleet in Galveston Bay.
We are attempting to get organized, and in that effort, have revamped our website to make it easier to communicate with each other and keep everyone updated on fleet news.
If you are an owner, crew, or just interested in local J/22 goings-on, head over to
j22fleet6texas.com
and sign up to get on our list!

The After-race party and dinner will be downstairs at Cabo Bar and Grill on Saturday March 18.  You will need a ticket, which includes Taco bar (Mahi and Jerk Chicken), rice, beans, queso, chips, 2 rum drinks, and your share of a keg of beer.  Two tickets are included with your boat registration.
It would really help us out if you would buy your tickets early, so we can better judge how much food we need! Plus you won't have to wait in line to pay.

Buy your dinner tickets here.

Buy your t-shirt here.

The party runs from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, and dinner will be served around 7:00pm.  After 10:00, the downstairs opens to the public with DJ and dancing.

Let's party.

No, it's not exactly a race to Cabo San Lucas or Mexico, but maybe just as fun.

J22 Fleet 6 (Galveston Bay) and Cabo Bar and Grill are hosting J/22 races on Clear Lake on the bye-weeks of the CLRA Wednesday Night races (May 4, June 8, July 13, August 17, and September 21).
The plan is to do two or more windward/leeward races with the last leg of each race finishing just off the pier at Cabo.  The Wednesday specials at Cabo are $5 burgers and $3 you-call-its!  Race participants will be eligible for Cabo random prize gift certificates to be redeemed the same night.

So get on a J22, or come out to Cabo to watch!  Racing starts promptly at 6:15pm.

For the Sailing Instructions and more Fleet 6 info, visit j22fleet6texas.com.
See you there!

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Rum race starting time
June 01, 2015, 09:24:14 AM
A few people have asked me why the rum race start was changed to an hour earlier than in the past several years. I don't know but suspect that maybe its because the course is a little longer.

A little history as best I remember, but maybe some of the more tenured GBCA folks can correct me...
The races started out as the TGIF races, and were held after work on Friday.  Since the start was after work, it was a little late, and always finished after dark.
The races then moved to Saturday, with the same start time as it was on Friday (I think).  More boats could participate since more people could get to their boats in time.
A few years ago the start time was moved to one hour earlier, still on Saturday.  This year the start time is another hour earlier.

My preference would be to keep the start time as it was, and move the time limit a little later (say 2130?) if that is necessary to accommodate a longer course.  Seems like on the nights when boats can't finish in time, it is very light (and hot) at the start and during the first leg, but fills in later. Adding another hour to the front of that misery won't make anybody thrilled.

Your thoughts?

General Discussion / Hit and run?
January 20, 2015, 09:46:15 AM
Came out after the Icicle party to find someone had hit my truck, and bent the rear bumper and fender but good.  :'( Maybe a truck or SUV backing up?
I was parked in the first lot on the left, truck facing south, before the intersection.
If anyone has any information, please let me know. If you are responsible, I am reasonable and understand you may not have had anything with which to write a note.

Several have asked me what is going on with Texas Race Week this year, so here is some preliminary info before the NOR is posted.

The format will be similar to last year. That is, day racing out of Galveston, with starts and finishes in the vicinity of HSC 11.
As for the social events, here is what we have so far:
Thursday - burger bar at The Rum Shack on the Seawall (same as last year).
Friday - TBD.  Don't have anything lined up for Friday yet.  Maybe just a happy hour somewhere, and dinner on your own.  Unless a big sponsor comes along.  Still working on that.
Saturday - Awards party at the Texas Seaport Museum and Elissa.  Catered by Bennos.  Entertainment by Andy and the Dreamsicles featuring the Kick-Ass Brass. Beer and open rum bar.

Social tickets will be $35, which gets you into all events including food at the Rum Shack, and food and drinks at the Awards party.

I will be soliciting sponsors, but in the meantime tell your sailmaker, rigger, chandlery, etc. that they should REALLY support this FUN event.

Oh and we have our returning major sponsor again this year... Three Fat Brothers!
Thanks John, Scott, and the other brother from the same mother!

Reminder that the Emerald Coast Regatta SAFETY SEMINAR is this Saturday, March 22, starting at 8:00am at Lakewood Yacht Club.
This is a Category 2 race and per the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations for Category 2:

SECTION 6 - TRAINING
6.01 At least 30% but not fewer than two members of a crew, including the skipper shall have undertaken training within the five years before the start of the race in both 6.02 topics for theoretical sessions, and 6.03 topics which include practical, hands-on sessions.

Per the Emerald Coast Regatta NOR:

3.4 Each boat shall conform to the ISAF Special Regulations, with the following exceptions:
a) Paragraph 3.14.6(c) is modified to allow vinyl or other coating on the lifelines provided any stained coating is removed to establish that the lifelines have not corroded.
b) Paragraph 4.23.1 is modified to allow the use of Coast Guard approved flares in lieu of SOLAS flares so long as the type and quantity comply with the requirements of the paragraph and they are not older than the expiration date. The use of SOLAS flares is highly recommended.
c) Paragraph 6.01 is modified to require either compliance with that Rule or, alternatively, for 1/3 of the crew, but not less than two, to attend the 2014 Emerald Coast Regatta Safety & Navigation Seminar at Lakewood Yacht Club.

This means if you intend to do this race, at least a third of your crew probably needs to attend this seminar.
See you there!

Galveston Bay Area Racing / 2014 Board nominations
September 19, 2013, 01:46:11 PM
The Nominating Committee of the Board of Governors is issuing a call for nominations for our upcoming elections. Open positions include all flag officers (Commodore, Vice Commodore, Rear Commodore, Fleet Captain, Secretary and Treasurer.) These officers serve one-year terms. Nominees must be senior members in good standing. You must be a senior member in good standing to nominate someone.

Nominations will close on September 29, to give the Nominating Committee sufficient time to prepare and mail ballots to all senior members.

If you want to get more involved with your club by serving on the Board, or have someone to suggest, please submit a nomination.
To submit a nomination, contact a member of the Nominating Committee: Walter Caldwell, Jody Henry, Jim Wells, Chris Alk, or Scott Lacy.

If you have any questions about service on the Board, ask any current Board Member.
