Crew Finder / Crew needed for J/Fest
October 02, 2023, 09:33:51 AM
Three J/24s are in desperate need of crew for this weekend's J/Fest Southwest regatta out of LYC. All positions needed, all experience levels considered. Two days of racing and partying with the best one design class in Texas!

Does anyone have a bolt-on bowsprit that they'd be willing to rent (or loan?) through the month of June? I'm on a team doing the Race to Alaska this summer on an Olson 30 and we're looking to add a few weapons to the arsenal.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / WNR payment
June 14, 2022, 02:00:26 PM
I signed up for WNR Series 3 today, and when I went to pay it showed me as having already paid in full for the year. I'm cheap and would love it if I don't have to pay for the series, but I'm also about 99% I haven't actually paid for the year. Can someone look into it in Regatta Network?

Is GBCA membership required to attend any of these?

Interested, if they're still available.

Too short notice for me for this one, but let me know if you need help in the future. Not a licensed captain so I can't handle it on my own, but I have a couple thousand miles offshore and I'm always looking to build that number.

Crew Finder / Crew needed for expanding J/24 fleet
February 10, 2021, 11:15:35 AM
J/24 Fleet 5 is expanding rapidly! With the anticipation that we will be adding 4+ new racing boats in 2021, a large number of crew positions are open. We need bodies at every position. Opportunities are available to crew for local races as well as on the highly competitive Texas Circuit.

No experience necessary- we'll train you! PM me for details.

Hey Roy, a couple of us started a discussion group on Facebook to weigh our options. I also started a spreadsheet to enter boat data so we can work out destinations that would be feasible for the whole group (or smaller subgroups).

Here's the Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/764372231043615/?ref=share

And here's the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1K7Ke6pFsFahP2rV_HOZYa9cUHDS9N639kUD99kRkdUg/edit?usp=drivesdk

Anyone (crew or owner) is welcome to join the discussion. Feel free to pass this on!

Not my boat, but J/24 #2828 "Red Hat" is for sale. Come join one of the most fun and competitive one design fleets in the area! J/24 racing in Houston is growing again after a few years of decline. US Nationals will be held in Dallas in 2022 and North Americans will be in Corpus Christi in 2023, so now is the perfect time to join up and start learning the boat. Red Hat has a long, highly competitive career on the Texas Circuit and should be a great boat.

Send me a PM and I can put you in touch with the owner.

On the fence? I'd be happy to get you on the helm of another Fleet 5 boat so you can try before you buy.

What's the planned minimum for a one design class? The NOR just says RC discretion. We're trying to get on the order of 4-5 J/24s out there.

General Discussion / Scrapping a boat
June 29, 2020, 11:28:03 AM
I'm looking for someone to haul away and scrap a rotten J/24 from Seabrook Marina. I had made a deal with the person recommended by the marina office but they backed out, and my only other lead doesn't want the job. The boat has been stripped of hardware (because we bought it for spare parts for the fleet) but has 900 lbs of lead in the keel. We're including a trailer and non-running Mercury outboard (with lots of new parts installed) to improve the deal and can discuss some cash on top if needed. There are caveats regarding titles for the boat and motor, which is one of the reasons we haven't been able to come to terms yet.

Anyone have any contacts or suggestions? Looking to get the boat hauled away ASAP.

We will have the Shorthanded Rules up very shortly... I have consulted an expert in streamlining the rules from the SOS-TX and a few other shorthanded venues.

Good deal, thanks!

Scott, is there a link to the short-handed class rules somewhere? The SIs state "class will sail in accordance with the GBCA Shorthanded rules" so I just want to know what I'm getting myself into. Did I read correctly that shorthanders use their normal PHRF ratings? If so, given that we don't subdivide the class, are we free to use our spin or our nonspin rating any given week? I'm still working out how to use my spin since Trick Bag is most definitely not set up for singlehanding.

It looks like a good idea to me too, and I'll probably singlehand Trick Bag for them (though probably not this weekend). That said, might be a good idea to distance the club from the series, since it seems to me it falls into a bit of a gray area legally. I don't see any skippers getting in trouble as long as crews comply with the distancing rules, but whoever wrote the "SIs" could get fined despite their claims of not organizing anything.
