I would be willing to pay $100/yr. to keep Bee honest (just kidding B). I need an ORC cert anyway, so happy to volunteer to be the rating guinea pig. Is there an official Galveston Bay measurer?

I don't believe there is a requirement for an official measurer for the ORC Club certificate.  I know I didn't use one.  In fact, all of my hull measurements were a copy from an old certificate issued to a sistership.  I did provide the rigging and sail measurements thanks to Pedro who had all that info.  I was actually missing a measurement and so just measured it myself and sent it in.

ORR is a different story...

I could be completely wrong about all of this...

Okay, got everything done.  I expect to pay for my ORC certificate within a week or two.  Who else wants to race against an old heavy boat??

For what it is worth, I spent ~$60 and got an ORC test certificate, a set of polars and a target speeds sheet for our boat.  The results were surprising to me at the lower wind speeds, but I am going to take a shot at following them.

I copied the one Ericson 39 that was in the database and put in my rig and sail measurements (thanks Pedro!).  I left in the hull measurements.  Didn't take much time and am happy with data it gave back.

I'd pay for a full certificate if we had a fleet.

I'd do it, but I need one crew to make it a double hand.  Any volunteers?

Okay, count SolAire in as well.  And be prepared to sail swiftly away from us in the dying breeze...  :)

Has anybody ever used the new plastic fuel tanks? Better to get an aluminum tank? Ideas?
Fuel-less Tramp!

We have a plastic fuel tank that I installed last year on SolAire.  It has held diesel just fine so far!

I got a quote for a similarly sized aluminum tank and if memory serves it was more expensive.  But I honestly can't remember what the delta was.  The plastic tank was off the shelf and delivered within days.  The aluminum tank was a 6 week lead time, if memory serves.

I happen to know Suzy and this post is a complete and total mis-characterization of who she is and what she wrote.  I suggest you re-read her post and take out all the things you think she said and respond a little differently.

Yep, owning and racing a boat is not cheap or for the faint of heart.

Hi Suzy,

I'm also addicted to sailing, but I'm owned by a boat so "fixing my addiction" means Time and Money, LOTS of time and money.  I don't understand your post - did you mean you are addicted to RACING?  Maybe there aren't races every weekend, but there is always sailing in Galveston bay, if you don't believe me drive over the Kemah bridge and have a lookie on any day of the week.  "We Texans", and others, DO desire to sail year-round, you would too if you owned a boat.  So why don't you buy a boat?  Oh!  You have access to the Galveston Bay Sailing Center, and you don't have to maintain any of their boats, good for you.  So what is the point of your post??

Racing is hard on boats, and the owner of the boat I usually race on will spend quite a bit of time and money servicing his boat before the HYC Midwinter Regatta.  Since you haven't raced with us and never will, howze about you contribute some of YOUR time and money to the boats you use to satisfy your addiction?

"Herein lies the problem with Galveston bay sailing"
You wanna know about sailing problems Suzie?  My boat has been raced hard (offshore) and put away wet, come over and let me show you the $3500 primary winch I just cleaned and inspected, it is trashed, I don't know what happened to destroy a big winch like that, but my boat isn't sailing anywhere until I renew that winch.  If we have ever met, the first thing you probably noticed about me is my smile, and that it needs about $2500 worth of dental appointments.  I also desperately need new glasses, but that ain't gonna happen any time soon because last night one of my crowns came unglued I was eating dinner, which didn't bother me nearly as much as the solenoid for my propane tank that started misbehaving while I was making dinner.

"The best part is that I don't have to maintain any of them! "  Oh Joy, I am sooo happy for you.  But please explain some more about your addiction and our problems with sailing year-round, I'm not getting it.

Is anyone interested in a level 120 ish class for those of us with a certain vintage boat?  Something with a D/L  (and/or)  SA/D qualifier?

Ericson 39 SolAire numbers:  PHRF Spin=126  D/L=313  SA/D=16.4

Distance course, bring any sails you have.

Chime in if you have interest.

I was trying to figure that whole thing out the other day as well.  Our Ericson 39 is 314 D/L and per the instructions I guess I could ask to go to the Heavy, but I was planning on just registering PHRF Spin.

Funny analysis of the SC 50, last years ULDB is now a heavy cruiser!

Chris

You are correct that you have the option of going either way.  Note above the Santa Cruz was mis-classified but has now moved into the right fleet.  So you get two gold stars for reading the not uncomplicated rules. :) :)

Thanks for the gold stars!  I hand them out on the boat, rarely do I receive them.  You have a thankless job, keep up the good work!

I'm assuming that PHRF Spin would be W/L?  What about non-spin?

Well put Chris. I will save you a cookie.

Excellent job on that first start Bob.  I was way off on how far from/over the line we were and you guys did a great job holding us there.

I never did get a cookie...

Implied in Bob Crosby's reply is that he prefers a pursuit course to improve the chances of having perfectly baked cookies come out of the oven.  We've all been there and know how hard it is to bake cookies down below when we are tacking and gybing up and down a W/L course.
