Galveston Bay Area Racing / The old Bleeding Edge
July 02, 2015, 08:10:47 PM
Tom Sutton and company have been doing some serious sailing on the East Coast in the original Leading Edge.  Not sure why I have to post this but then again I have over 1000 such things and I am awake most of the time.  Now if I could just get most of my parts to work most of the time.

The old Bleeding Edge took second in Block Island.  Kudos to Sutton and crew.  May they win many more.

Hopefully I can stay awake long enough most days to keep up with the great sailing these guys are doing.

LYC is hosting a Hurricane Preparedness Round Table Saturday May 30 at 10 AM in the club ballroom.  The public is welcome.

The key speaker Lew Fincher is a heavy hitter in hurricane preparedness. He is a consultant to several large companies and helps them strategize their handling of hurricane threats. He should make this an exciting program.  Mardie Menke, the Harris County Emergency Evacuation Agency will also provide information of significance to hurricane threats.

This Captains' Round Table is open, free of charge, to all the boating public. LYC has shortened the program to about 2 hours, so starting at 10:00am and ending about 12:00pm will not take too much time out of anyone?s day.  Please encourage all boaters to attend. Complacency is the biggest threat we have during hurricane season.  Preparedness is the key.

I have a crew member who is interested in a ride to Freeport on Saturday morning to make the race start.  We would both like to avoid the need to play musical cars.

If you are going down and have a spot, please let me know

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Vestas Wind

Even if you don't think much of Sailing anarchy, this may be the time to checked it out.

Take a look at the Vestas Wind grounding video.  Hope I never get to say "been there done that."

Fortunately the Coasties did their usual heroic work.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / HYC Offshore

WOW.  Only one spin boat finished the reach down the beach?  No spinnaker boats finished the Offshore?  This is amazing.  Why would anyone set the "finish before 1900" for a 58 NM light wind offshore race?  Oh well, glad I stayed home.  Kevin says everyone on board Stinger had a great time.  I am pretty sure they had plenty to drink.  If I had been on board and we ran out of libations there would have been a serious mutiny. On the other hand, I have a feeling the crew of Bleeding Edge has a different perspective.

Wait til next year.w

Galveston Bay Area Racing / William "Bill" Charles
March 04, 2014, 09:52:13 AM
Services for Bill Charles, better known on Stinger as BC, will be held at the First Baptist Church in Pasadena this coming Thursday.

Visitation is from 5-6 with the funeral following from 6-7.

For those of you who didn't know and never met BC you missed knowing one of best guys ever.  He was extremely easy to get along with.  I mean, after all, he got along with me.  He had a kind of unique way of decreasing tension.  When things got a bit on the hot side you could always count on him uttering his famous "whatever."   I can still hear him saying that. BC was always where and when he said he would be and always did what he said he would do in the best way possible.  He was definitely a great sailor, wonderful person, and a super friend.  I can only remember one brief moment when BC's face did not carry a smile and that was my fault.  He liked to smile.

He will be missed.

Merry Christmas, Frohe Weihnachten, Feliz Navidad, Vesely Vanoce,  Feliz A?o Nuevo, gl?ckliches neues Jahr, and a really big HAPPY NEW YEAR to all the GBCA Volunteers.  May all your boats sail on fair seas.

Thanks for making 2013 a wonderful year to sail, to party, and to just enjoy life.  Thanks for making sure GBCA stays the place to race. Job well done is much appreciated.

I know 2014 will be just as good or better.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / AC 45 Courses
September 02, 2013, 08:29:45 PM
I have been paying attention to the AC45 races in SF.  Wondering what it would be like to race one of the courses they do.  Basically a blast reaching start followed by n W/L legs and a blast reach finish.  Double gates at each end. Requires too much resources?  Comments?

Would certainly be a bit different then the usual W/L we do.  Would be nice to hit the line at full speed at a fairly straight angle.
