Reminder that the Emerald Coast Regatta SAFETY SEMINAR is this Saturday, March 22, starting at 8:00am at Lakewood Yacht Club.
This is a Category 2 race and per the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations for Category 2:

SECTION 6 - TRAINING
6.01 At least 30% but not fewer than two members of a crew, including the skipper shall have undertaken training within the five years before the start of the race in both 6.02 topics for theoretical sessions, and 6.03 topics which include practical, hands-on sessions.

Per the Emerald Coast Regatta NOR:

3.4 Each boat shall conform to the ISAF Special Regulations, with the following exceptions:
a) Paragraph 3.14.6(c) is modified to allow vinyl or other coating on the lifelines provided any stained coating is removed to establish that the lifelines have not corroded.
b) Paragraph 4.23.1 is modified to allow the use of Coast Guard approved flares in lieu of SOLAS flares so long as the type and quantity comply with the requirements of the paragraph and they are not older than the expiration date. The use of SOLAS flares is highly recommended.
c) Paragraph 6.01 is modified to require either compliance with that Rule or, alternatively, for 1/3 of the crew, but not less than two, to attend the 2014 Emerald Coast Regatta Safety & Navigation Seminar at Lakewood Yacht Club.

This means if you intend to do this race, at least a third of your crew probably needs to attend this seminar.
See you there!

The Emerald Coast Regatta fleet is growing.  We will be offering the option of using Delorme's new inReach device for tracking the yachts, if you have been tempted to purchase this new tool.  SPOT rentals are available in the Regatta Store if you do not own a SPOT or an inReach.  Long sleeved shirts and ladies V neck shirts are also available in the store, but only for a limited time.

Powerpoint presentations from the Safety meeting are available on line at EmeraldCoastRegatta.com.  If you have sufficient offshore and training experience, and you review the on line information, the Race Committee will consider an application to substitute other training and qualifications in place of the ISAF Special Regulations training requirements.

US Sailing did not publish prescriptions to the Offshore Special Regulations for the current year, but instead adopted a new set of Safety Equipment Requirements.  The RC is reviewing what impact, if any, those changes should have on this jointly hosted regatta.
