Title: Key West 2012: January 15-20, Who's going?
Post by: ChrisK on November 27, 2011, 08:13:01 AM
We always have a few local boats make the trip, this year is the 25th anniversary of Key West Race Week

It sounds like the local 1d35 fleet will be well represented
with Revolution and Tres Hombres making the trip

Rumor has it six 1d35 from around the country will be going, with half of those being converted "turboed" asymetrical

Who else locally is going? I'm assuming a few J80's...

The J boats will have their own specific classes, it will be interesting to see how Johnston breaks them down. TP52s and Farr 40 will be back. Those are awesome boats to see in action!

I  signed up, paid a deposit on reserved housing, and paid the registration.   Not sure but I think I was the first 105 to do both. Arranged to charter Orangatan, so thought I was set.  Even figured out how to make weight. Was going to be a great time one way or the other.

November 13th was my drop dead date to cancel reservations without substantial loss. On November 11th there were only two of us signed up.  Me and Frank Seidelmann out of Ohio.  The two of us got together and decided that neither of us wanted to do PHRF  so we bailed.  Very disappointing.

As you might expect, right after out names disappeared from the entry list 3 other 105's began to question as to why we withdrew.  They were definitely planning to go.  They were sure we could have gotten two more to make a class.  But, by that time Frank and I were done.

For me the moral of the story is, "If you don't have enough gumption to sign up early don't bitch if the class fails to form."

Ain't it the truth!  Applies to Galveston Bay too!

Musica is headed to Fort Lauderdale for feeder race to KW only.  Then, Charleston Race Week, and Newport Bermuda 2012.
Get your sail on.....

A couple of GBCA boats have started the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race feeder race this afternoon along with 47 others.

Musica and Hot Ticket 40 (There's also a Hot Ticket J120 racing).
Intital bouy reports are 30 knots on the nose, and a few competitors have dropped out...
The winds 'should' die down by tonight when the weather moves through

In other news, a couple of boats have arrived via trailor to Key West...
Judging by the frequency of the Irish Kevins reports from Tres Hombres, it's going to be one heck of a week!

Musica takes 3rd in Class 3rd Overall PHRF--we beat the multis too--for the mini-sized conch shell prize.  We were handily beaten by a Kerr 55 and the new Farr 400, rating -72 and -15 respectively.  They sailed in different weather once they extended.  We paced the Farr for about 30 miles. I personally enjoyed kicking the J122 Teamwork to the back, since they were crewed by my old boss at J/Port Annapolis and the J/World hot shot.

At the awards ceremony, Cliff decided he was done with his appendix, and it was time for it to be remove.  He was in surgery 1am this morning, and recovering well.  Some people will do anything to get out of boat delivery duty.

Alas, 12 hours in Key West was not enough--I had to rush back in order to find another drifter, this time with long underwear--called Icicle #2.

Day 1 Coverage, big boat coverage

Day 2 Coverage, Melges line, check out the Mojo finish at 9:39. It looks to me they're keeping clean, and avoiding the carnage behind them. Is the Japanese (bow 055) boat suppost to give a little room for Warpath (bow 603) to finish and not roar into the corner on starboard, essentually slamming the door on Warpath? Or is that the price you pay for being outside trying to sneak in on port tack? The distances are tough to judge from the camera angle. Of course, the Key West current probably didn't help Warpath get swept into the RC boat...
