Here we are, in SE Texas, and the Sailboat racing continues!
The 2016 Icicle Races, sponsored by Cruzan Rum are starting in January!
Please thank Cruzan for again sponsoring the races!
This will serve as a virtual Skippers' meeting.
The Sailing Instructions are posted here:
http://gbca.memberlodge.org/resources/Documents/2016%20Icicle%20Series%20Sailing%20Instructions.pdf
Changes from last year are noted as Red text in the SI's. The most significant changes or things to be reminded of are below:
1. The instructions about luffing other boats ARE GONE. The normal 2016 RRS apply here.
Play nicely with each other, don't force anyone into a steel and concrete range mark and don't hit anyone, (or anyone's boat.)
2. We're subdividing the spinnaker sprit class: Spinnaker Factory Sprit and Spinnaker Aftermarket Sprit. It's spelled out in the SI's. The three Spin fleets will have three separate flags. This is an experiment. If you own a aftermarket Sprit boat, please get your fellow sailors to come out so we know there's interest. If there isn't enough interest, we may be obliged to go back to the 2015 divisions for the Rum races this summer.
3. If any mark has gone missing, yachts will round the coordinates given in the SI's. (Take a picture of the mark wreckage and the ship that did it, too!)
4. We've clarified the fleets that use PHRF ratings and those that use the club handicap. Note that GBCA does not administer PHRF ratings. If you want to sail in the PHRF fleet, you need to get a rating from the good folks at PHRF-GB. Please go to www.PHRFGB.com
5. The purpose of the GBCA Club Handicap is to give cruisers and less experienced racers a fleet to sail in. The GBCA club handicap is not a PHRF rating, although it is applied in the same fashion. Don't confuse the two. If your Club rating drops below your PHRF rating, then congratulations; it's probably a good indication you should change to a PHRF fleet. If you are one of our well known racers and want to sail in the Club handicap, The GBCA board may assign you a lower handicap than the PHRF rating for your boat.
It is VERY important for club handicap racers that you to provide the time for your finish to us so we can adjust the ratings. We will try to make the ratings change a little more than they did in 2015. Your Fleet Captain was a little too conservative and will try to do a better job this year.
6. All boats must fly a flag during the entire race. Please fly it prominently!
7. If you are the first boat, or think you are, please provide the next four boats to finish behind you so that we can score the races. There is a form attached to the SI's that should work for this purpose. Please write legibly. If you can't make the after race party, you can e-mail the results, or send them via text message to the Fleet Captain: 281-216-4082 rdhunkins(at)Verizon(dot)net. Please do this as soon as possible so we can award the prizes.
8. The Last Icicle Race is the Judge Smails Memorial Regatta - Get out your blue coats, White duck trousers, ascots and Captain's Hats!. Gophers and golfing equipment are optional. A prize will be awarded to the boat with the best crew decked out in this garb.
We're looking forward to seeing you all out there!

So I paid my $40 for a 2016 PHRF certificate. How long does it take to be able to see it on the PHRFGB site?

I downloaded mine about two weeks ago
So where do I get a pink flag?
GBCA has all color flags. White, black, yellow, pink, and orange for sale. I will post days and times I will be at the club house so you may drop by and get them. You can always email me and make arrangements to pick one up.

I have been visited by the breast cancer fairy. She has arranged for a hot pink flag.
Actually, a good friend has offered to make one for me.
Heck, I was waiting for that pink thong and Charles wearing at the party afterwards :o

That could be arranged!
He probably wood
Hmm. Thats a really good idea. Charles in a pink thong would be quite the thing. With a similar bra we could rename him, oh I don't know, Caitlin?

Thanks Commodore Marilyn for the fixin's!

Its nice to see the finish times, it helps captain improve there skills, and think were to focuses there efforts, and give hope to being the leader. Well done Bob!! The club class has always been fun and I believe this will make it more fun. Go Captain Ron, you can DO IT!! :-)
I would love to see the finish times for spin non sprit so I can see how far ahead they finished.
I was way too late coming out for the finish of Icicle #2. I did not expect everyone to finish that fast. Looked like a nice smooth ride :o. Here are the few photos I got. https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/albums/72157663193548342 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/albums/72157663193548342)
The reason we collect the times for the Cruising club is so we can adjust the handicaps after the races.
Other fleets are not required to record times, and it's a lot of work to compile it. If someone can collect times from the other fleets and provide them to me, I'll post them.

Great shots. Which boat were you on?
Good shots Bill! Keep posting!!
Great pics, thanks!
It would be great if more boats assigned someone to leave their smartphone below and run the RaceQS tracker during the races.
We had 9 on yesterday for race #2 (linky). (http://raceqs.com/event/208625)

Thanks, we're on Sunspot Baby, Hunter 340 in the Cruising Club Class. Not just my shots, I try to get everyone on board to grab the camera and take video and stills. Had a lot of autofocus problems Saturday, it was tough keeping the spray off the lens.
RaceQ replay was great. I loaded the app this morning and will try to remember to turn it on for icicle #3

Stellar of Course
After downloading the RaceQ appm, what needs to be done to connect with the icicle (or any other race)?
I almost always forget to turn it on --- maybe someday.
Bee,
Set a calendar on your I phone or assign the task to a crew member.
Geo.
Now George, you know I will have to remember that as well. I will try the calendar thingy. Mostly its because I suffer from CRS.

To JayZ:
You don't need to do anything with RaceQs other than record your race and upload the results. The RaceQs website will associate all boats that are sailing in the same area at the same time. Whoever wants to can name the race and define marks on the website.

I set a calendar date with a 10 AM warning and I set an auto start date in RACEQS for 12:10. Stinger's start time is 12:11:18. Will see if that helps.
Headed for Kemah in the morning. Have the Club Handicaps been updated?
Thanks

As always, fantastic photos. Doubt there is any other place on the planet where one gets so many nice photographs.
Thanks.

Great Pictures. Was not aware someone lost their mast. What boat is that????
Great photos Bill! Becky's photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/albums/72157663633775185 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/albums/72157663633775185) . I think the mast down was Richard Dashiell.
Preliminary results for Icicle 3 are posted.

Please send me corrections if something is not right.
I am still waiting for Cruising Club fleet times before publishing all the finishers in that class, so please send them to me if you sailed. I know there are a few out there who said they would e-mail them.
Thanks for sailing yesterday!
Bob H.
I'm still trying to find out who finished 4th in the PHRF spinnaker, no sprit fleet.
I had a report of a sail number 178, but cannot find it in the PHRF GB database.
If anyone knows who this boat is, please send me a note.
Thanks,
Bob H.
Spin non-sprit results updated.
I did it. Interesting view of the race. I watched one some time ago, but this had a lot more boats. Very nice. No guarantee I will remember to do this in the future. Will try.

If your name doesn't appear and it should, it means I lost it or otherwise did not receive your time. Please send it to me. Apologies if you did send it, it might have gotten buried along with a lot of other e-mail I get every day.

OK, I'll start the discussion about adding an hour to the Icicle race time. For those of us that have lived here for more then a few years know that the wind in January, blows in cycles. One day 20+ kts. one day 5 to 15 kts. and one day calm, back to 5 to 15 and so on. Anyway for this reason it wouldn't hurt to add an hour when we hit one of of those calm days during the Icicle. I don't care if we start an hour earlier or extend the cutoff time an hour.
It could help the after party, by having more winners rum handed out vs just one or two bottles when less boats time out.
I would like to see the time limit extended for next weeks Judge Smails Regatta, but if not, it needs consideration for next year.

I don't have a problem with extending the cutoff time by an hour.
Charles
I've consulted with the Board and we agree.
For the last Icicle race, the cut off time will be 4:00pm. The Sailing Instructions have been amended.
See you Saturday!

Wind was a little too much for Flying Kiss but was able to secure a ride on Bad Girl. Here are a few photos from the second leg. The Melges was hauling it! https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/albums/72157661796754324 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacyphotos/albums/72157661796754324)

Wildcard finished I front of $iphon on the last race.
I am not trying to change the awards, but I think the Non-Spin results may not be correct. I was on Bad Girl and we finished 3 to 4 boat lengths ahead of Wild Card.
Anyway it was a fun day to be on the water.

Awesome pictures of marker 2 rounding it was very hairy for a while......
Hi All,
Have the results for the final Icicle Race been posted?
Thanks,
