Title: Icicle #2, January 9th 2010
Post by: ChrisK on January 03, 2010, 02:57:58 PM
We do it again Saturday. This time we sail the other direction.

Approx 40 boats enjoyed a crisp cool day on the water. One wind hole around the second mark made things interesting.

If you missed the action, a few hundred pics from the Lacy brothers on m/v Tramp at this link

Be sure to tell Scott and John thanks!

Just a friendly reminder to fly your class flags: a good sign that alot of new boats have come out!

We're new. What do the class flags look like? Do we make one or get one somewhere?

Glad you asked!

Just a small flag flow astern or off the backstay

Cruising class is bright orange
Spinnaker is white
Non-spinnaker is dark
Shorthanded is white over dark

You don't need an official flag. In the past we've all used (and seen) some very creative solutions.

Shop rags, old maps from the nav station, various articles of clothing...

When you finish first place and record the finishes, it helps keep the guesswork to a minimum.

J/80 Doodah left the course at 2pm and  still hadn't rounded the 1st mark.  Stinger was closest to rounding--maybe one other boat.  There was N wind pushing off Red Bluff but a convergence zone over the race course, mostly.  A NE was trying to push in, but seem to bump up against the Northerly.

We turned to head home, put the kite up and blazed back in at 6-7 knots.

Crazy day--it would be a miracle if anyone finished.  It wasn't that cold once you became numb......

It also wasn't that cold once the wind died and everyone was just sitting there in the sun! :)

Stinger was the first to round and made it about 1/3 the way to H at 2:45.  Silver Bullet passed by about 300 yards West on a beat  while Stinger sat in a hole.  Wind filled in a bit as we headed back to the slip but that was way too late.

Fun day overall.  Beautiful sun and skies.  Just a touch on the cool side after 3:00.  Food at the club house was great.

I think the water went South.  We hit bottom twice.  First coming out by the Parking garage and then somewhere about the middle of the Kemah Channel

Big D had a close call with the pipeline fron the dredge barge on Saturday - we usually clear it OK, but with the water so low, we hit it and felt a pretty substantial jolt. Fortunately it didn't seem to do any major damage (at least nothing we could detect that day - knock wood!!!) If you're coming out of HYC, be careful around there when the water is low!
