Title: Elissa Regatta
Post by: sailfastliveslow on February 22, 2010, 05:19:54 PM
Anyone know the format of the Elyssa Regatta this year?  PHRF?  One Design?  Host?  Not much info on HYC or GBCA.

Not sure of the details of the race but for certain the return of the J24 Beasley Cup (2010 J24 Texas Circuit stop) will be part of the festivites that weekend. I also heard they are going to bring back the international consulate (was it the Chronicle Cup?) again.  As for the Elissa making an appearance, I heard she may make a trip up the channel for a photo op/fundraiser but not tie up for an overnight in Bayport.
I'm sure there are a few HYC members that frequent this page, a little more 'in the know' that can add more details as they unfold....

You thinking B boat or Viper Phillip?

Depends Jeff.  If its a Viper affair, we go that route.  If its a PHRF event, we do the B.  Depending on weather and number of crew we can hustle up.  Sounds like an interesting event, just damn little information about it at the moment.  It's been moving around the calendar past couple years and the theme changes.

The US Sailing "discount" adds $5.00 to the total fee, so instead of being charged $75.00, a US Sailing member is charged $85.00. I made the same mistake setting up fees on Regatta Network for GBCA, so I know how easy it is to do.

Only sixteen boats signed up?  Where are all of you!!

I wouldn't worry Mary.  Lot's of people sign up at the last minute.  If I didn't sign up early I would forget and show up without registration.

We will hopefully have at least 5 of the best Bay boats in the world out --- Stinger, Solaris, Babe, Zippity, and Radiance.

BTW

There are three of these great boats for sale locally:

Elixir, J-Teez, and Flyer.

Buy one, you will like it.

A great chance for HYC to shine after their rebuild, and more importantly: a fundraiser to preserve the unique nautical heritage of the Texas tall ship Elissa.

It looks like my new deal and stock Vipers wont hit port until the first weekend in April - we may only turn out the two register or three boats for the event.

At the present it appears we'll be racing a J120 and maybe a J105?    Yikes!  On second thought..  that could be fun!

What's it with sailors in Galveston Bay - everyone waits until the last second to register.

The Elissa is going to sail up to the racing area on Saturday, and will be there at approximately 12:30.

Should be a beautiful sight!

I met with GYC this morning to get things set for TRW in July.  I can never resist driving down to the channel when there, so I drive to the end and there?s the Elissa out practicing.  Several folks were out there with long lenses who were talking about the trip up the HSC this Saturday.  One mom who?s son was crew for today and Saturday was just beaming.

My coworkers grandson, 5 years old, also spotted the Elissa this past weekend. He tried his best to convince his 8 year old sister that it was a 'pirate ship' coming into port...

Good Bee - now all we have to worry about is getting run over by a J120?

Unfortunatly the other V has a conflict and wont be able to make it out.   Looks like it will just be El Animal buzzing around.

Weather looks great.

There will be at least 4 105's on the line.

More details about the Elissa, from Linda McKee:

Hi Chris,
...The Elissa will be sailing up the bay on Saturday, arriving around 12:30 to the racing area.  The Consuls Regatta this year is honoring the country of Mexico.
Two dinner tickets will be included in each skipper bag, dinner is scheduled around 6:00pm.
There will be a silent auction and live auction.  I plan to put the auction list in each skipper bag, we have many interesting things.  The regatta does not have a sponsor this year, thus we are depending on making money on the auction for the Elissa donation.  Anyone can come to the dinner ($15.) and auction.
If you need any other info, please call or email.
Again, many thanks.

Title: Re: Elissa Regatta - Looking for someone who is going to find the Elissa.

I find myself skipper-less and boat-less on Saturday.  I'd be happy to serve as Snacktician for a ride to look at the Elissa under sail. If a bribe is required,  I'll provide beer or rum (or maybe even both).

There will be Guinness in Stinger's --- Along with a bucket load of other such elixirs, including some Sam Adams, St. Arnolds, and probably DosXX.

So it looks like the J120 has bailed on our fleet - leaving two vipers in PHRF Assym..   The other viper had a conflict and wont be able to make it - wonder where that leaves us?

eh, come over and play with the 80's.. we won't notice the difference...

Thanks for the invite Tuma..  ;-)

We enjoyed being out with the 80's..  kind of wish they would have run 3 or 4 shorter races instead of 2 really long ones but we had fun regardless.

Sorry we couldn't join you on Sunday - we were in a borrowed boat that was heading to Charleston in two weeks and based on the wind projections didn't want to risk damage.   At one point on Sunday a boat got stalled @ the start, back-winded the jib and came within 6" of us.

How did Sunday go?  Are the results posted somewhere?

BIG thanks to Scott Spurlin (Jboats' SW) and the Zartler's for hosting the J111 event on Friday night.  Jeff J flew in and gave a quick presentation and the boat looks great!  Cant wait to see one out on the water.

Relly glad ya'll came out, even if you did beat us... I would have liked 3-4 shorter races on Saturday and 2-3 on Sunday, but it was good racing...

Sunday was fun, but challenging...  the shifts were unpredictable and I think the lead changed almost every leg, until "Infinity" got loose...  The wind seemed to only pick up on the upwinds, where the down winds weren't as fun, but we experimanted a bit, caught some shrimp and enjoyed the fleet...  are you coming back for the Spring Regatta? It's a J80 circuit regatta..

We were having a lot of trouble getting around the course.  We were about 140lbs under weight so up-hill was rough.  Down-wind I just couldn't make myself soak like we probably should have...  Scott kept telling me to come down and i kept want to make the boat move.

That is a problem jumping on an 80.. you would think it would plane easier, but you have to dig deep in a longer range of breeze... I have no idea where the turning point of is from VMG to planning mode.. never found it Sunday...

Here are a couple camera-phone pic's I got of the Elissa while we were racing. I wish I had thought to bring the good camera so I could have zoomed in!

Neat.  Never saw her so now I at least get an idea of what she looked like coming up the channel.
