Title: Veracruz 2010
Post by: dkugle on February 26, 2010, 08:44:33 AM
The 22nd bi-annual Regata de Amigos is scheduled to start June 18th.  NOR and entry form are up on the website:
veracruzregatta.com
Special this year will be the celebration of Veracruz' 500th year anniversary with a tall ship rendezvous featuring twelve tall ships from around the world.  The tall ships are scheduled to arrive as our racing fleet converges on Veracruz.  Should be spectacular.  Kickoff party at LYC is March20th, 4:00pm.  Safety seminar will be May 8th, 9:00am at LYC.  Expecting a great turnout this year for this GBCA/LYC jointly run regatta.  Introducing a new Roger Stone Memorial trophy to be awarded to PHRF Spin overall.

This is THE year to race the Regata de Amigos.  Aside from a great ocean race, Veracruz is a unique destination.  Whether you are drawn to the history, the culture, the diverse geography or just a giant Fiesta, this will be one for the history books.  When's the next time your boat will be moored in the same 500 year old port with a fleet of Tall Ships?  Make plans now.

The 2010 art is hot off the press.  Find links on the Regata de Amigos site under the latest news: http://www.veracruzregatta.com/news.shtml (http://www.veracruzregatta.com/news.shtml)

For a small slice of life in Veracruz, see the report from the 2008 race committee:

Link (http://www.velasudamerica2010.com/) with info about the tall ship event (English translation available in top right corner)
Veracruz is the last stop of the Velas Sudamerica tour, which is already underway around South America.
The RdA finish is timed to be about the same time of their arrival.

*hint* For those flying, now would be a good time to check Continental Airlines for booking....

Many of us have seen some of the Tall Ships that are coming to this Regatta before.  If you haven't, then it's really hard to explain how their sheer majesty touches the soul of a sailor.  Let us start with the entry from that country that has a flag very similar to that of Texas:  Viva la Esmeralda!

Length     113 m
Beam    13.11 m
Depth    6.9 m
Hull    Steel
Desplacement    3610 t
Sail Area    2870 m2
Total Crew    314

Here?s a first look at the new Roger W. Stone perpetual trophy, just out of the Cangelosi stone works.  There?s still a bit more work to do, but I thought you should see this.

The base is Absolute Black granite with a cream marble inlay.  The obelisk is Rossa Laguna marble.  All the lettering on the base and obelisk was blasted and filled with gold leaf.  Nice work guys.

Am I missing something, I was able to to view two of the boats last week on the "tracker" link provided on the web site..now I'm asked for company/username/password.

http://yacht.terramarnetworks.com/interfaces/yacht/yachtlogin.php

I've tried to find the terra networks registration info...but Fail

..this "tracker" feature is cool.
Thanks in advance
David

The two boats previously shown were carrying trackers as a test conducted during the Heald Bank race.  The site will again be available closer to start time with all the entries.
