Galveston Bay Area Racing / Farewell from Little Joe
April 25, 2018, 05:36:27 PM
In case you don't see Little Joe on the race course, just wanted to let everyone know I'm following through on a long term plan to move back home to New Orleans.

Texas has been a great place to work and live, but New Orleans is home and close to family.

I have thoroughly enjoyed sailing in the Bay. The racing was great and would not have been possible except for the GBCA.  I have been in other volunteer sailing groups but none like the GBCA. It really fulfills its mission and pulls together sailors, boat owners and folks that want to sail. It is one of the most unique sailing organizations I have ever come across.

Sailing and racing would not have been as enjoyable had I not met an awesome group of people. Nearly all of us met on the GBCA's crew finder discussion page. Many, many thanks to Christine, Matt, Dan, Bill, Todd, Eric, David, Jenny, Travis, Phil and Don. By the way, these are all good sailors and I'm sure would appreciate an offer to sail on another boat.

A special shout-out goes to Suzy Bradford for her guidance in finding sailors and helping me through the early stages. She helped more than she knows.

Sailing in the Icicle and Rum Races has been great but would not be as memorable without the after party's. A chance to meet folks from other boats and swap stories is half the fun. I will miss those parties. Plus, I have acquired a certain taste for Cruzan Rum...

I could go on but just want to say I have enjoyed sailing with you all and wish everyone all the best in the future.

Best regards and thank you,

Dan Sullivan

Did not see them on the Regatta page. Are they going to posted before race time?

Little Joe has a dodgy engine. If you are leaving from KBM and are definitely planning to sail this weekend, would greatly appreciate a tow to the channel. Slip is E-22. Call or text Dan at 281-460-0550. Much appreciated.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Using RaceQs
January 29, 2017, 10:43:10 PM
I have been using RaceQs for 2 years. I recommend it to all. It has been great as a post-race debrief the next day. You can see what really happened, how fast you were going and when, heading, if you are closing or losing to another boat, etc. It has been good for sharing information with the rest of the crew.

It is so easy to use; just download the app and go. When you finish the race, you can give it permission to upload to your desktop. Like the rum, it is free.

You can also set up the marks of the race that was sailed and this is displayed with the tracks. With the mark information, it calculates time, avg speed, etc. for each leg of the course. The best part about this feature is that the course only has to be set up once, by one person, and it will show up in everyone's race replay.

IF GBCA is planning to use RaceQs for Rum and other races, I would Highly Recommend GBCA designate one person and only one person to manage the virtual course feature. It will make race data and individual boat data very user friendly.

Please let me know if you see a problem with the current standings:

Just checked RaceQ. Our finish time was correct but there were at least five boats that finished in front of us.

Regardless of the time we turned in Airborne, Stinger, Infinity, Hamburg were all ahead of us. Seems there were other boats in the mix so we did not get 5th. Also on the series results Little Joe is listed twice.

Little Joe just registered for the PHRF W/L Class.  I am hoping we get a lot of boats on the line.

As far as classes breaks go, what means the most for us is the size of the fleet in our start. I have sailed one-design for years and it was great as long as we had 7 to 10 boats out. Any less than 5 and it was follow the leader. Not much change in positions in a club fleet that small.

For PHRF Spinnaker boats, why not target fleet size as the first principle? Up to 11, one fleet. 12 or more, split all of the spinnaker boats into two rating groups. Or at least keep similar rated boats in the same fleet. And no fleets less than 5.

If, the ASYM don't want to sail against SYM or vice versa, then split it ASYM and SYM. (I don't see the factory vs. non factory).

The only issue with the ASYM all in one class is the overlap with the J- Boats that could sail one-design. I get it. One-design is great. So as not to break up that party, if the 105's and 109's sail one-design, that is their call.

Here's hoping for a big fleet of PHRF boats for the W/L's so that this all works out. :)

Little Joe is in for a Level 100 Class. I am hoping we can get enough boats and race the W/L. We rate 99 and there are 13 PHRF boats between 99 and 108.
