Galveston Bay Area Racing / 2010 J80 Worlds
October 08, 2010, 01:55:32 PM
Unofficial results of the j80 Worlds! Looks like Spain got Team Quantum in the tie breaker for the Championship, But some great sailing by Scott Young and Terry Flynn!  Also Jay Lutz and Glenn Darden form FWBC were flying fast all week too. Bill and Forbes did a great job on Kicks as well as Al on Andale!   Weather was 15 knots plus all week and really wild the last day got up too 30 knots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

General Discussion / Re: kids boat
November 06, 2009, 07:39:24 AM
I suggest maybe start with Bay Access and Mattia over at LYC, he could point you in the right direction or might have kids that are graduating from Optis to laser 4.7......................I know also they have rental type boats for season use too..

Scared?????????????????...... Or upset that we took one of Cluster's play callers from the North Americans to join Team LYC for the weekend!!!!

Al,

Uzi and I are sailing the 80 for LYC team and we have one non member(sailing coach from HYC) sailing with us. The other 3 of us are members at LYC. I don't see the problem if a single non member is racing aboard the boats, it actually allows a member of another club to pick a ride up to race with someone else.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: NOOD no more in Houston
October 29, 2009, 09:09:48 AM
I too was glad to see the NOOD go. For the cost of the entry and the timing of the event it was not worth the cost.  I think doing something later in October after the Bank did very well for us with the 80 NAs. The weather temp was aewsome, the winds were good all weekend.  I suggest if we do a replacement regatta for the NOOD, that it is 2 days not 3 days. This allows people to work, those that travel in gives them a extra day of work or school in the week as well. Maybe do A Great Pumpkin Regatta!!

The 2009 J/80 North American Championships proved to be the perfect ending to a great season of J/80 racing.  The best of the best came to Texas to give it their all in a fight for the championship.   Six past North American Champions joined the fleet of 27 boats, in what proved to be almost perfect conditions on Galveston Bay.  The regatta went down to the wire of the final race of the 8 race series, with Kerry Klingler and crew aboard Lifted edging Terry Flynn by 1 point, to win the 2009 North American Championships.  In third place was another past champion, Glenn Darden, followed by Jay Lutz in fourth.  The current Midwinter Champions, The Storck Family, rounded out the top 5.  We went back to our 7th place finisher, Bill Rose and the crew of Kicks to win the Corinthian Trophy.  Congratulations to all the competitors, the fleet was mixed every race through out the regatta, making it the most competitive J/80 regatta I have seen.
I want to thank this year?s host venue, Lakewood Yacht Club for having us. Terry Chapman, the club General Manager, and his staff did a fantastic job.  A lot work was put in by our race committee, Marc Holdaway, Principal Race Officer, and Dwight Bengston, Race Committee Chairman, did a great job in putting together a very organized group of individual to run all the races.  There were 29 different people helping on race committee on either mark set boats or committee boats, thank you all.  Andrea Todaro served as our Head Judge and Protest Chair person. Thankfully to all the J80 racers, we handled our business professionally on the water and the protest room was never used.  Finally, I want thank Kristen Robinson and the J80 Class for their support and for the party on Friday Night.  Thank you guys the sailors and members of the J80 class, you make events like this fun to put on. Practice up all winter if you can, the 2010 Season is just around the corner, and Marion is hosting the North Americans, followed by the Worlds in Newport.  It is a great time to be in the J80 class.

Thank you to Chris K and all the GBCA members and supporters for you help as well, it definetly was a big team effort.

I just exchanged emails with the event organizer in Spain and below is his quote, he did say he would continue to update me to there investigation of the accident.

"As I told you all we know is that Jay is back in the hotel and going back to USA the next days.
Regarding the accident all we can tell you is that has  been an unfortunate sport incident that is beeing clarified."

Fernando Gomis

I know it is very little info but it all they want to release at the moment.
