In the past you can get to around the Texas before the coast guard hails and comes to intercept.

General Discussion / 2007-2012 Assorted Photos
July 28, 2013, 10:33:23 AM
I spent some time re-organizing my old sailing pictures from 2007-2012 (mostly 07 and 08).  Just keeping them out there in case anybody is interested.  This includes the 2007 Rolex.

I don't know about this.  In college Tulane always held a big inter-conference regatta during Mardi Gras and ... it was pretty rough.  I recall a skipper wandering round SYC in the morning saying "Anyone seen my crew, I lost him on Bourbon st last night?"  Skippers wearing their costumes during the races and eventually passing out making their crew helm the boat.  And this was just a 2 day regatta.

Of course it may be good practice for J22 worlds at SYC.

The real link is here (the one with 600K views (for a good reason)):

My first favorited video on youtube, and the song is Vanessa Amorosi - Absolutely.

A note on the GoPro HD:  If you actually want to record smoothly at 1080p, you need at a bare minimum of 15 mb/s write speed.  If you want a 32 gb sdhc card that will handle the task and will actually work well, you WILL spend over $100.  I got a class 10 Kingston for lower 100s and a Sandisk which is even more reliable will be mid 100s.

If you don't have a fast write speed and it looks choppy from the raw screening, uploading it to youtube and have their compression deal with it will make look it a lot prettier.

No.  This was designed for sports where if it may be on a smooth platform such as a surfboard or very bumpy like motorcross where image stabilization won't work.  Image stabilization is designed for when the camera is held by hand.

Here's a GoPro HD example (on 1080 30fps, still bad memory card):

I have two GoPros, the older non HD wide angle version and the HD version.  I've used them with a head strap, but you could mount it anywhere easily (especially on a stern pulpit).  It can be submerged deep so getting wet is no problem.

The GoPros have multiple resolution and fps options plus have non video options and can take images in a time lapse fashion.

This video was with the old wide angle GoPro:

Some of my newer videos were taken with the HD version but with a sdhc card that wasnt quite fast enough to be really smooth.

Looks good; wind history coming in increments of either 5, 10 or 15 min.  There's some sorta unintelligible unit used for the wind reading though.  Everything else is great.

Apparently the deadline was Friday and the event was pulled sometime Thursday night.  What I would like to know is how many boats there were that were planning on racing but were just waiting to register until the last minute or even past the deadline?

The turnout may have been low, but good enough for some decent racing as in the Heald Bank.
