Where is the Galveston Bay Foundation on this plan?

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: Galveston Bay PHRF

Thanks for posting that LeighAnn.

I would like to point out that anyone that holds a current PHRF certificate can run for the board.  You do not have to have a GBCA, LYC or HYC membership.  When we look at building the slate each year we always ask the 3 Fleet Captain's for suggestions simply because most all of the racers belong to one or another club.

Our October meeting will be held on the 4th instead of the 13th due to the Harvest Moon Regatta, if you are interested please let us know before that meeting.  You can contact any of the current board members including myself.

Power play: As crews dismantle the old P.H. Robinson Power Plant, state Highway 146 and FM 517, speculation is swirling about what might take its place. Rumors and general hearsay have it that owner Kemah Ventures is considering some kind of marina development.

But it?s unclear whether canal homes would be a component. Officials with Kemah Ventures could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

But those in the know said representatives of Kemah Ventures have been asking around about the viability of raising the FM 646 bridge to allow for large boats/yachts to pass under so users could take advantage of the cooling water discharge canal and enter the bay.

The man-made canal is one of the property?s major draws. Raising the bridge would take some deep pockets and the Texas Department of Transportation would have to approve and manage the project.

The power plant is in unincorporated county territory but within Texas City?s extraterritorial jurisdiction, which gives the city some authority over the property.

That means any development would have to meet both the county?s and Texas City?s requirements. The power plant was built in the 1960s but has been idle for nearly 10 years.

Texas Genco, a former subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy, sold it to NRG Energy, which sold it to Kemah Ventures. Stay tuned.

We are not the only ones to notice the windy weather this spring.  This was in the Galveston paper this morning.

What ever happened to the Google Earth map that marked many of the known hazards?  I don't think I have seen it on the new website, it would be good to get an idea of just where all of this stuff is.

Didn't say they aren't a lot of fun.  Didn't say one shouldn't buy one.  Didn't intend to rile anyone up.

Of course, if I was as good of a sailor as you guys are, if I wasn't too old to sail one, and if I could find enough young crew, then maybe I would buy one.

No riling taken at all.  I think this is a fun discussion and we should all thank Brad for selling his boat so we can tell him how to spend the proceeds.

Bee everyone is going to get a 105 when they get as old as you.  In the meantime the 1D is a lot of fun.

Best bang for the buck on the bay right now is the 1D 35, with you there would be a class that should be pretty active.

If you like racing in 10-15 knots, sunny skies and mid 70's temps and you did not enter this one you missed a great day.  Kudos to the HYC Race Committee for packing in 18 legs of fun racing yesterday.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: 1 day vs. 2 day regattas

Maybe we should cut back on some of the fall 2 day events and go for a series of Saturday only races with cumulative scoring for those races.  September through December racing is a bit hit and miss anyway due to the weather a series of one day races might level that out a bit.

After racing every Wednesday for 6 months I get a little burned out, I would think I am not alone on that.  A single day series seems appealing. The football fans might be more inclined to come out as well.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / GBAD Regatta
September 10, 2010, 01:36:31 PM
I think most of us have received the email with the NOR sent out by GBCA today.  If you have not signed up or you still have not gotten a PHRF certificate, about the only requirement to enter this race, there is still time.  The PHRF board has moved it's monthly meeting to the 15th in order to accommodate any boats that would like to enter.

As part of PHRF-GB  sponsorship of this race any boat that does not have a current certificate but signs up for the regatta will get one that's good for the remainder of the year at no charge.  Counting GBAD, that leaves 3 regattas left in 2010.  (Compass Performance and HYC Turkey Day are the other two.)

If you have questions or need some help in getting your application filled out contact any of the PHRF board members.  You can find that list here.

Hope to see you on the water.

General Discussion / Re: 146 Bridge Weather Station
July 14, 2010, 10:16:49 AM
I just looked at the bridge website 30 seconds ago.  It looks like it is working to me or at least giving data.  WeatherUnderground has the breeze at 13S the bridge is showing 10W.
