Galveston Bay Area Racing / Rum Race video
August 25, 2014, 06:21:22 PM
I shot this video from El Jardin as the boats came around the low range mark.  This was the 8-23-14 race.

Speed is 4x.

Anybody know if Kirby's diving service is still around?  I had a quarterly cleaning with him but he seems to have disappeared...

Here's a 3 minute version of the low range rounding at 3x speed from El Jardin.

Enjoy

I completely agree that the Rum is a great race to get new people out on the water.  We had 4 "never been sailing" folks with us.  But to be at the helm without knowing basic right-of-way can be and almost was a bad day twice.  I know I used the moment as a teaching tool on my boat.

Unfortunately, we had a curfew and bailed early.  I was able to talk to him on the water though... ::) and did tell him he had the right of way.

That guy should not have been racing.  It looked to me like he tacked right on top of you and the couldn't get any boat speed then drifted down on top of you.  Later on the 2nd leg we were on port, he was on starboard.  As I should have done, I started to duck under his stern.  Apparently not knowing he had right of way, he decided to duck under my stern.  When I then headed up, he headed up.  I ended up flopping over just to get away from him.  No excuse for not knowing the basic rules of the road.  Red #55.

Any pictures from the other lines?

A question for participants.

I don't have a wind gauge so I was wondering what other boats recorded.

Thanks

Where are all those Catalina 320's that were in the Icicle?  Come on guys.  It's a great time!

We are on the short list.  But the competition is heated...

Anybody try the suction cup bracket?

Thanks Kevin,

He was asking me about sailing today and I plan on taking him out but since I knew about this I figured he couldn't beat the price... ;D
And he might learn something...But I didn't know how basic the seminar would be.  You know, sheet vs. halyard, etc.  I guess that would be up to me unless he wants to do an ASA class.

Gentlemen,

A friend of mine is very interested in sailing but knows next to nothing about it.  I mentioned this seminar but it appears it's geared more toward those that have a basic knowledge of sailing and might want to race.  Will he learn anything or will he be scared off by the terminology?

Thanks

This year?s Shoe Regatta has a class called Classic Canvas.  Some of you may be curious as to what that is.  Basically, the only difference between the cruising non-spinnaker distance class and the classic canvas is that only boats with Dacron sails can enter the Classic Canvas class.  Because PHRF doesn?t correct for types of sails (Dacron vs. Mylar, etc.), creating a Classic Canvas fleet levels the playing field for us non-high performance racers.  So, calling all rag heads.  Let?s play!       ;D

Where the heck did the Vipers come from?
