Scott, is there a link to the short-handed class rules somewhere? The SIs state "class will sail in accordance with the GBCA Shorthanded rules" so I just want to know what I'm getting myself into. Did I read correctly that shorthanders use their normal PHRF ratings? If so, given that we don't subdivide the class, are we free to use our spin or our nonspin rating any given week? I'm still working out how to use my spin since Trick Bag is most definitely not set up for singlehanding.

We will have the Shorthanded Rules up very shortly... I have consulted an expert in streamlining the rules from the SOS-TX and a few other shorthanded venues.

did the shorthanded rules ever get posted?

This has gotten ridiculous.

When will the SI be available?

In Spin-sprite fleet standings, you have Spitfire and Spitfire! as two different boats.

General Discussion / Looking to contact David Cathcart
October 14, 2014, 11:32:36 AM
I saw that David Cathcart (Waterford Harbor) entered the HMR with an O'day, but did not list witch model. With a PHRF spin rating of 204 I suspect it was a 28.

I'd like to talk to him about his experience off shore with his boat.

So anyone who knows David, please forward my email kwm77573(at)yahoo(dot)com to him.

Thanks,
Kent

The sailing instructions references the SOS-Tex bylaws... doing a Google search returns a website appears to have been inactive for many years. Is there somewhere where the SOS-Tex bylaws can be found. I didn't see them on the site.

Thanks

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: GBCA Cruising Class
January 21, 2013, 12:45:42 PM
I am going to resurrect this old thread...

I have raced the Icicle Series in the cruising class since 2010 on 4 different boats. Here are a few observations from my perspective(mainly as a small boat owner/sailer):

#1 - in 2010 very few of the boats in the class flew spinnakers. Now it seams that about 1/3 do. Which is great except when your a non-spin boat and the winds allow flying the chute on 2 of 3 legs. Might consider splitting into a spin and non-spin cruising class for Icicles and Rum Races.

#2 - I sail smaller boats, Catalina 25 "Wind Bandit" and now O'Day 28 "High Cotton". I wonder why we don't see very many of the sub 30 ft boats sailing? Are people with smaller boats(say 31 ft and less) not wanting to race against the bigger boats even with the handicaps? I saw how well Yankee Lip (Catalina 22) did in the spin fleet.

I had no comment on the Rum Races since I have never sailed one so things may be different in the summer.

Now that I have opened my mouth, I will take another step down the path to the dark side and join GBCA this year and volunteer to help with the cruising class.

General Discussion / Electric motors

Anyone on here have an electric inboard or outboard as aux power?

I may need to do something about the outboard on my Catalina 25 and have been reading about electric outboards and would be interested in talking to someone who actually has an electric outboard or inboard.

Clear Lake Sailing Club is hosting Waiting for the Great Pumpkin Regatta on Clear Lake Oct 8th (one day event).

Currently there will be a Portsmouth start and a Catalina 22. Other classes may be added as interest dictates.

We will try for 5 races Saturday afternoon followed by BBQ at the White Pavilion after the races.

One more time for the lake boats to get out and play!

I am looking for recommendations/contact information for local sail lofts. I have already been in contact with C&C and am interested in contacting other local lofts about sails.

Thanks,

Where was Wind Bandit at the finish, only saw Lil Bit o Sol
taking nunbers?

                       KATANA

WB and LBOS were both taking times. i don't know where WB was when he was recording, but his numbers and LBOS numbers for other finishers match

We were heaving to just north of the channel markers.

Bee if you haul your boat down there next year... let me know... I bet I could find the time to crew for you. Might have to be shore crew but I hear the parties alone might be worth the trip!

Jay,

How far are you from Pearland... When I start the i550 build next year I'd be willing to partner with someone (share the cost, share the ownership, share the fun!) or maybe even make space in my garage for a second build. I've got a 16' Fireball in the garage right now, 2 i550's would probably fit.
