I can use someone weighing about 135.

#2
I do not think Bee's calendar is correct. The GBCA Calendar shows the Performance Cup to be in March, not September.
#3
I could use a couple of crew for my J-22.

Email or respond here if interested.

?Save Sailing, Save the Family?

Participation in sailing is declining in America, down 70% since 1979. But not for the reasons that you might expect. And Saving Sailing is a hot topic: when the book by the same title burst onto the scene in October, it quickly topped Amazon's Hot New Releases list in sailing, and garnered 5-star reviews by sailors, parents, teachers and people interested in fun and challenging outdoor free time pursuits. Saving Sailing is a provocative argument and action plan for the revival of family sailing and quality uses of free time for rewarding intergenerational pastimes and lifelong hobbies. Sailors appreciate it for its familiar stories and the opportunity to reflect on sailing in the bigger picture. Sailing clubs and instructors appreciate its advocacy of the core role of organizations and volunteerism in building a lifelong passion for sailing.

About the Author

Hayes contributes significant time to community work and to sailing. He chaired the Program Committee of the YMCA Camping Services Group and served on its Board for three years.  He was a Director of the Milwaukee Yacht Club for four years, helping to renew its youth training facilities, and was its fleet captain. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, leading its Program Committee, helping to set long term program strategy. He has developed and teaches innovative basic and advanced sailing classes for the Center. He is also a member of the Junior Sailing Committee at his home club, the South Shore Yacht Club.

Hayes is an avid sailor with nearly thirty years racing and cruising experience, starting on penguins, scows, and Solings, and graduating to big boats and sport boats. His sailing resume boasts thousands of course races and thousands of offshore miles in the Chicago-Mackinac, Queen?s Cup, Hook, and Trans-Superior races, winning many. Most important to Hayes: he and every member of his young family race and cruise together as often as possible.

Why not a J-22?

The J-22s are active on the lake and on the bay.
The boats are easy to sail and not expensive to maintain.

There is a great group of people to get you up and running quickly.

There are a few for sale in Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.

There is one in The Woodlands, #581, where the owner has recently lowered his price.
He did not update the listing at the US J-22 Class site.

Check out the classified sections at:

Interesting.

French Kiss started out very early this AM to head up Highway 3 before the rush hour.
She still moved rather quickly for a sailboat, top speed 30 MPH.

Kenai and Cimboco have gathered off Deke Slayton for the day.

One quick difference that I see is TrackLeaders does not show LAT/LONG position. Perhaps there is a way to display LAT/LONG and I have not found it.

Expect at least one J-22 to enter.

I am trying to drum up a J-22 Class. There is a circuit race in Dallas but only a few local boats are going.

So how about it J-22s?

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: GBCA Cruising Class

Yeah -- the cruising class can be a lot of fun.

At the Turkey Day Regatta on Saturday the crew on one boat got to thinking about how good some fresh crabs would be after the race.

They stopped along the way to pick up a crab trap full of fresh crabs.

They kept them underwater all the way around the race course just so they would be fresh when they returned to the dock.

What a feast... 5 large crabs.

Seriously though, it would be good to see a lot of cruising boats out on the race course. It is a great way to learn to sail amd have a great time too!

Katherine,

I hope you found a ride for the Turkey Day Regatta.

We have an active J-22 fleet on Galveston Bay if you are ever interested in sailing a monohull.

Call HYC office at 281-471-1255 -- they can put you in touch with the J-22 Fleet.
