For you bluewater racers, here's some information from race chair, Jim Winton over at LYC:

Kickoff Party:                         Saturday, 4 pm, February 25, LYC
Safety Seminar:                       Saturday, 8 am ? 5 pm, April 14, LYC (this is tentatively planned to be done in conjunction with USSA Safety at Sea and will result in a certificate good for 5 years with attendance will probably be mandatory for a percentage of the crew)
Skippers Meeting:                   Friday, 6 pm, May 18, LYC
Cruising Boat Race Start:       Friday, May 25, HSC Buoy 11
PHRF Fleet Start:                   Saturday, May 26. HSC Buoy 11
Awards Party:                         Thursday, May 31, Gulfport Yacht Club

Unless you attend the Safety at Sea seminar, AND the Practical Hands-On Seminar, AND pass the written test, you won't receive the certificate.  This is a very full weekend worth of seminars, wet-work, and testing, and is one of the best programs offered by UASailing.  One day of classroom seminar followed by lots of hands-on demos and training in the water and on boats, followed by a rather comprehensive test - be prepared to get wet and waterlogged as well as brain-drained.
The Certificate may be required by some Category 1 and 2 events outside the US but is not required within the USofA (suggested, but it can't be required).  The Safety at Sea seminar, a course highly recommended for all offshore sailors, is only required as part of obtaining a certification.

Having taken both seminars and passed the test, I highly recommend this for everyone who is doing offshore or bay sailing and even Wednesday night beercans (evidence the MOB video from this past year).  I plan on attending.

I would like to do the course, but it's the same day as the GBCA Singlehanded race..  Priorities!

US Sailing endorses two kinds of offshore safety seminars:
There is a two day course, referred to above by Brian, which includes a written exam and an ISAF certificate.
We intend to offer a one day seminar, including interactive lectures and limited hands on activity such as instruction on life rafts and demonstrations on storm sails, boat safety etc.
The one day seminar will not include a formal exam.
According to my information, a US Sailing certificate will be issued but not an ISAF certificate.

Sheila McCurdy is the designated moderator and speaker. Her credentials are impressive. This should be a worthwhile exercise. We will keep you posted once the program has been finalized.

(We regret the coincidence with the short hand race. However, it has been a challenge to coordinate schedules on relative short notice, because US Sailing moderators have already been booked for a number of similar seminars throughout the country.)

Sounds like a great time!  And by then the refit should be complete - too bad she's probably stuck in central texas for several more years!

The Gulfport Race Safety Seminar on April 14 will NOT be a US Sailing sanctioned seminar.  While the seminar will cover many of the same subjects as are addressed in a US Sailing Safety at Sea seminar, the Gulfport Safety Seminar will be more focused on that race and safety and navigational issues specific to it than a general US Sailing seminar.  Attendance at the LYC Gulfport Safety Seminar by 30% of the crew, but not less than two crewmembers from each boat in the race, will be required for the 2012 Gulfport Race.  The seminar is provided FREE of charge.  I am hopeful that LYC can host a US Sailing sanctioned seminar next year that will address issues of safety at sea more generally applicable to all offshore sailing rather than any one race.  Stay tuned for an announcement on that event.

The Safety Seminar will NOT be a US Sailing seminar.  Instead, it will be a LYC event focussing on safety and navigation for the Gulfport Race.  Attendance by 30% of the crew but not less than two crewmembers is required.

If you plan to race or are just interested in this years Galveston to Gulfport race, please join us for the kick off party Sat. Feb. 24  4:00pm - 6:00pm in the Lakewood Yacht club lounge.
