US Sailing is offering a new program to help educate potential jurors for club races, but the seminar also provides great info for those of you who may one day find yourself in the protest room as a protestor or protestee.  It costs only $25 for US Sailing members.  It is being offered at Lakewood Yacht Club on Sunday and Monday evenings, June 3 and 4, so it won't interfere with racing.

US SAILING ONE DAY JUDGE WORKSHOP
Sunday and Monday evenings June 3-4, 2012
Contact: Rick Mallinson, 405-329-8085 mallinson@ou.edu

This is a recently developed US SAILING One Day Judges Workshop and Test required for initial certification as a US Sailing ?Club Judge.? Some previous protest committee experience is helpful, but not required. The objectives of the club judge program are to improve the quality, consistency and fairness of protest hearings and results at the club level.  You will receive a training certificate and depending on your experience, passing the test, etc., you will be eligible to be recognized as a US Sailing Certified Club Judge.  This workshop is useful to competitive sailors even if becoming a judge is not your objective because it will help your understanding of the Part 2 rules, the protest process and participation on protest committees.
The workshop will begin at 1700 Sunday and last until approximately 2100 and then meet again at 1800 Monday and end about 2100. The workshop will concentrate on three areas of development: Part 2 (right of way) rules, Part 5 and Appendix M rules (protest procedures), and protest hearings. Topics in the club judge workshop will include: review of the rules, managing a hearing with proper procedures, deriving a set of facts from testimony, arriving at conclusions, and then applying the correct rules to come to a decision. These will be accomplished with audience participation using presentations and mock hearings.  A test with debriefing will be conducted at the end of the workshop Monday.
The instructors for this workshop will be Rick Mallinson (Senior Judge, US SAILING Judges Committee) with guest appearances from Senior Judges Jim Tichenor and Marty Ottenheimer.
Where: Lakewood Yacht Club, Seabrook, TX.
Time: Sign in: 1630 Hrs, Cost: Cost of the workshop is $25.00. This includes handout materials, and test.  US SAILING will cover the tuition for young adults (age 18-35) to attend US SAILING Judges Workshops.
