I just received an email from LYC that Howard Williams has passed away.  He was icon of sailing and racing on Galveston Bay and paved the way for GBCA in the early years.

A very nice guy, had the pleasure of having him at my table during the '07 Commodore's Ball.  His book "Love at First Sight" is a great account of racing in Galveston Bay and a great history of GBCA.

Sad news. Since the Commodores Ball in 2007 we would correspond on occassion about GBCA history, researching past Commodores, and life.  He was invaluable when we updated the Stories Behind The Silver a few years ago. He went through some rough times with cancer and in particular, really wrestled with the death of his wife a few years ago. Fortunately, he found love again.  In the end (and as he told me, tired of the chemo) he bought a boat, came back to the bay, and returned to sailing to enjoy his passion.  Thanks for being a part of and preserving a unique piece of Galveston Bay history, Howard. Fair seas....

Howard was a legend. He talked about rating rules back in the day. Whomever didn't win whined about the current rule same as today. He said "Finding a good handicap rule is like finding a needle in a haystack, and it's usually by stepping on it."
