The next All Things Marine Roundtable is a special free one-day seminar:

SAFETY IN THE BAY AND BEYOND

September 5, 2015 from 9:00am – 3:30pm at the Houston Yacht Club

Presentations by the distinguished and impressive array of speakers will each be one hour, including time to answer your questions.  Speakers and their topics include:

0915 - Opening remarks will be given by Vice Commodore Gordie Keenan

0930-1030 - Dr. Gregory Kutsen, MD - Topics Dr. Kutsen will cover include: what to do if a crew member gets hit in the head by the boom, caring for fingers that were caught in a winch or anchor windlass, and what to do if you run out of beer

1030-1130 - David McMillan will discuss Communications:  VHS and AIS

1130-1230 - Lunch

1230-1330 - Jack Yoes will discuss How to Outfit Your Boat for Long Distance Cruising

1330-1430 - Dan Reilly, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston

1430-1530 - Maarten Van Hasselt will wrap up the event with the topic:  Checklists and your Crew's Safety and Yacht's Integrity

This Saturday!  Below is some detailed info about our speakers.  For those of you wanting to crew this is a great educational asset for your "sailing resume", plus a good day to meet some skippers and learn about the HYC Crew Exchange.  Also, registrations is NOT required - this seminar is open to the public and there is plenty of seating for everybody.

Back by popular demand, the Education Committee of the Houston Yacht Club (HYC) is again presenting Safety in the Bay and Beyond.  This seminar will be held at HYC on Saturday, September 5, 2015 starting at 9:15am with coffee and donuts and concluding at 3:30pm.  Brown bag lunches will be available for purchase.

Opening remarks will be given by Vice Commodore Gordie Keenan, then kicking off the presentations will be Dr. Gregory Kutsen, MD.  Dr. Kutsen graduated from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center At Dallas in 2003, finished Emergency Room training at Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas 2006 and is currently Board Certified in Emergency Medicine.  Dr. Kutsen is an experienced offshore sailor.  In his "free time", several episodes of dragging at anchor motivated Dr Kutsen to invent, and subsequently found, Kemah-based Mantus Anchors: The best setting boat anchor, MantusAnchors.com.  Topics Dr. Kutsen will cover include: what to do if a crew member gets hit in the head by the boom, caring for fingers that were caught in a winch or anchor windlass, and what to do if you run out of beer.

Next is David McMillan who will explain Communications:  VHS and AIS.  After the lunch break, Jack Yoes will discuss How to Outfit Your Boat for Long Distance Cruising.  Jack has raced in a variety of boats from 19' to 43' in Galveston Bay and off shore in the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas and Caribbean, and crossed the Atlantic in the summers of 2009 and 2011.  He has most recently reduced his racing schedule in favor of working on Race Committee and with the Special Olympics Sailing.  Jack is a US Sailing Keelboat Instructor, a Technical Delegate for the Special Olympics, a National Race Office and a Club Judge.

To give us insights on how weather is related to safety and we can stay informed, Dan Reilly, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston will speak after Jack.  Weather is especially important after the disaster in Mobile Bay during the Dauphin Island Race hosted by the Fairhope Yacht Club in April of this year.

To conclude the session, Maarten Van Hasselt will wrap up the event with the topic:  Checklists and your Crew's Safety and Yacht's Integrity.  Maarten and his wife like to sail Galveston Bay especially in the winter, participate in regattas and join the Harvest Moon Regatta and Heald Bank race when possible.  People that sail with Maarten on Joan III get acquainted with the onboarding checklist and the board rule: "Sail safe, Sail silent (no shouting), Sail fast". Kids love the checklist part where they do the scavenger hunt for the safety gear and really like the fact that the skipper rules over the parents.  No surprise that this mechanical engineer uses checklists to keep Joan III and crew safe and in good operating order.
