?Save Sailing, Save the Family?

Participation in sailing is declining in America, down 70% since 1979. But not for the reasons that you might expect. And Saving Sailing is a hot topic: when the book by the same title burst onto the scene in October, it quickly topped Amazon's Hot New Releases list in sailing, and garnered 5-star reviews by sailors, parents, teachers and people interested in fun and challenging outdoor free time pursuits. Saving Sailing is a provocative argument and action plan for the revival of family sailing and quality uses of free time for rewarding intergenerational pastimes and lifelong hobbies. Sailors appreciate it for its familiar stories and the opportunity to reflect on sailing in the bigger picture. Sailing clubs and instructors appreciate its advocacy of the core role of organizations and volunteerism in building a lifelong passion for sailing.

About the Author

Hayes contributes significant time to community work and to sailing. He chaired the Program Committee of the YMCA Camping Services Group and served on its Board for three years.  He was a Director of the Milwaukee Yacht Club for four years, helping to renew its youth training facilities, and was its fleet captain. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, leading its Program Committee, helping to set long term program strategy. He has developed and teaches innovative basic and advanced sailing classes for the Center. He is also a member of the Junior Sailing Committee at his home club, the South Shore Yacht Club.

Hayes is an avid sailor with nearly thirty years racing and cruising experience, starting on penguins, scows, and Solings, and graduating to big boats and sport boats. His sailing resume boasts thousands of course races and thousands of offshore miles in the Chicago-Mackinac, Queen?s Cup, Hook, and Trans-Superior races, winning many. Most important to Hayes: he and every member of his young family race and cruise together as often as possible.
