Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: Using RaceQs

I've been using it awhile now. and it is helping me to learn a few things. Like out on the bay my tacks are about 110 degrees. but if I work on it I can get them down to 100. on the lake they are between 90 and 100. I don't know if I can do any better than that. Also if you can make notes, either mental or otherwise, you can see when your adjustments improve your results.  Also it show you how well you are steering.

The spread on this last adjustment is only about a minute and a half. The more people that race more often, improves the results. Also as your experience improves your rating should drop, bringing the crowd closer together. Having a fixed course that reverses, evens out the differences in the legs.  If you actually peak out on boat handling then you should be in the mix and it becomes more tactical skill to win. In the last race, I had new crew and messed around with the spinnaker which let some folks catch up. Then on the last leg I did not sail the boat to its potential upwind, which costs us the most time.

Galveston Bay Area Racing / Re: ORC Rating System
January 25, 2017, 06:12:43 PM
As a novice/casual racer, my viewpoint is more of  what is relatively easy to understand and doesn't require a lot  of money or time to get into. Like the Yardstick, ORC has a wind factor and I think that is good. Also ORC seems to have a casual component, as well as a more professional level.
Maybe we start with a class to register the Club certificate. And then a casual Sunday afternoon race using the icicle/Rum race course for interested parties on an off weekend, to test things out.

My only problem with weekend races is that I usually have to work Saturdays. perhaps a Sunday afternoon event occasionally?
