General Discussion / A Houston Treasure
September 11, 2015, 10:29:27 PM
Today we visited the Houston Maritime Museum. Yes, who figured there was such a thing. It's in a house a block south of the Medical Center, surrounded by condos and office buildings. What an incredible surprise. Not big like many others, but a collection of high quality. Well worth the visit and the support. They have big plans. Land already on lease from the Port and design by Gensler. All they need is a couple of mil more. Go visit. It will make you happy.

General Discussion / Sailing World
July 08, 2015, 12:45:38 PM
I just got a renewal notice from Sailing World. $40/year??? Not worth it. I found it on Kindle for $9.99. Works on iPhone and Android phones, iPad and Android tablets and of course Kindle readers. Zinio has it for $11.99. It works on Mac and PCs, as well.

Tired of receiving those annoying renewal reminder emails and letters? Wish you could just set it and forget it? Well, now you can. New members can select Manual or Automatic renewal on the application page. Current members can change to Automatic renewal from the renewal page. Click on Change Membership Level. DO NOT make this change until it is time for your renewal since this affects your renewal date and can result in additional dues payments. Please review your contact information and change as needed.

You must have a PayPal account to take advantage of auto-renew.

General Discussion / Galveston Bay Report Card
October 13, 2014, 04:58:27 PM
The Galveston Bay Foundation (?GBF?) and Houston Advanced Research Center (?HARC?) are working together to deliver critical information about the health of Galveston Bay to the public through a report card, scheduled to be released in early 2015. Everyone who lives near, uses and enjoys Galveston Bay is encouraged to visit www.galvbay.org/reportcard to learn more about the project, take the public interest survey, and submit comments about issues concerning bay health.

The Galveston Bay Report Card will provide the public with citizen-driven, science-based measures to assess the health of the bay, such as the status of key habitats (e.g. wetlands, seagrass, oyster reefs), fish and wildlife populations, trends in water quality of local bayous and the bay, and impacts of coastal change and sea level rise. The selection of specific indicators to be used in the report card will be guided by the public input collected through survey responses and comments submitted.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good and reliable cleaning service. I'm getting tired of scrubbing the topsides and as a result do it less and less with the expected results.

From Phil Kropf.

FYI, please read the important message below.
Hopefully everything will be fixed prior to the 4th!!!
I will post an update when operations are back to normal.

For those who maybe have never seen my posting on the TMCA website about the normal height specifications for the GCRR Bridge, and how recreational boaters (with tall masts!) can determine that it is in fact in the fully raised position, please click on this link: http://www.tmca.nu/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_download&gid=153&Itemid=87

Subject: Galveston Causway Railroad Bridge Clearance

Mr. Kropf,

The Galveston Causeway Railroad Bridge is currently stuck in a position that reduces navigational clearance to approximately 63ft on the Galveston Island side and 65ft on the mainland side. The waterway is NOT closed, however, this may affect water-way users. Repairs are in progress and vessels should contact the bridge as normal on VHF FM Channel 16 prior to proceeding.

Very respectfully,
Albert Hernandez

General Discussion / 2012 Commodore's Ball Registration
January 10, 2012, 04:34:31 PM
If you are registering for you and a guest, you must do more than just enter the guest's name on the initial registration page. You must click on "Add Guest" toward the bottom of the page and then enter the guest's name again. This will properly register the guest and charge you the correct amount.

If you have already registered and thought you were also signing up your guest, but were only charged $50 instead of $100, Go back into registration. It will tell you that you are already registered, but will allow you to add your guest.

Sorry, we don't write the programs.

General Discussion / Mike Seich
October 03, 2011, 07:19:30 PM
The following sent to us by Trish and Roy Weeks concerning the recent passing of old friend Mike Seich. I remember some fabulous barbecue "back in the day."

Please pass this on, Mike Seich was a GBCA member who cooked for many GBCA events like Veracruz. For many years he was a huge asset to GBCA .

If whomever gets this did not know him please feel free to contact me Trish Weeks 281 787-2774 . I told Kevin Hayes just today and he too can help with details if needed. The November issue of Telltails magazine should have additional information.

Thank you,
Trish & Roy Weeks  former GBCA members
